Title: Unable to run 'avast! Antivirus' service
Post by: mc_border on February 26, 2011, 09:10:32 AM
Yesterday I switched on my computer and saw that my avast! Pro 5.1 didn't work. When I tried to start it in Avast application nothing changed. Then I found out that 'avast! Antivirus' service wasn't started. So I tried to start the service but when it almost have been started some message appeared. There was something like "Service avast! Antivirus on your local computer have been started and then have been stopped. Some services are stoped automatically, if they nothing to do" and bla bla bla in that message.

By the way!!! When I starts my computer after loading Windows I'm shown message from one of installed program that I haven't got rights to start it... But I am an administrator on my computer!

Could you advice me what to do?

Try a repair of avast first though add remove programs (depending on what version of windows you have), what other security software do have running on your system ?

I have WindowsXP and have no other security applicaitions besides standart windows.

When I started repairing process an error appeared:"Error processing packages. Please use full update.". In logs I see that last step was:
26.02.2011 12:35:09 package: Error processing packages. 0x20000011

Looks like good time to uninstall 5.1 altogether, run the uninstaller utility in safe mode and upgrade to 6.0  ;)

I think it's not a best idea to remove application when it isn't work! I think should be the way to make it work! And I haven't find out why avast service stopped and cann't be run!

Your install is obviously too messed up to be repaired, you need a full reinstall anyway (as the error message tells you).
