If it's POP3 you sure can. If it's web mail, then your protected by the on access scanner.

Hi nikolaus, welcome to the forums.

A search of these forums for Mozilla will no doubt return many hit as this topic has been  previously discussed a number of times.

Check the avast help file for Setting up mail Protection. Switch of your email client and run the Mail Protection Wizard - Or you can set it up manually.

visit the User's FAQ (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=9;action=display;threadid=4818) thread, it will give you a lot of useful advice.

Not exactly true. There is/are email applications that "safe" the files locally without extension. (can't remember the name, but it is mentioned in a thread here somewhere) Avast will not by default scan those files.

Besides new version of avast will have a new mail scanner, I think the Internet Mail is set to listen 'any' pop3 server like Bob said.

Eddy, for me, the fact of saving files (caching) without extension should be, as far I can understand, a matter of Stardard Shield and not for the Internet Mail provider listen the pop3 server port.
