Title: Computer Discovery.
Post by: Infratech Solutions on March 11, 2011, 10:06:11 AM
My SBC don't discover any machine.

What can we do? We are testing a workgroup net, not a domain.

That may be the unfortunate situation with discovery in workgroup mode.

There is no central catalog to query for computers. What ever windows report to us we try to report to you. Try running the discovery repeatedly, perhaps the OS will be nicer to you the second time and report some computers.

Sorry, don't have a better advice now.

I haven't used this yet so I don't know what discovery methods are offered or how they work, but might it be something simple like a firewall or file and printer sharing being disabled?

If it doesn't have active directory to look for computers, then I can only assume NetBIOS or something is being used.

Discovery on WORKGROUP is working for me. I have only one client (XP SP3) but has been discovered by console.

Well, yeah... the things is - the less computers you have in workgroup, the better it works. The NT Browser (or Why can't I always see all of the computers on the LAN?) (http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html) has some human readable technical explanation of the mess.
