Title: Auto Sandbox missing + Icon rotates
Post by: jl747 on March 12, 2011, 05:57:40 PM
I just did a clean install of Avast 6.0.1027 free version on my Windows XP Home and the Auto Sandbox protection is missing.

Also note that the Avast icon on the task bar keeps rotating as if it is doing a scan.
I have checked if there is anything scheduled and nothing is showing up as far as I can tell.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled with rebooting after each with no change.

How do I get each of these problems corrected.

Edit:
After totally shutting down computer the icon has stopped rotating. For now.

It appears that the 'majority' of users experiencing the loss of Auto Sandbox are using XP OS's.

I rather doubt it is a majority of users at all, yes some are reporting this but it is far from a majority.

My XP Pro system doesn't have the auto-sandbox, but my win7 netbook does. For the most part this appears to be XP related, but that will have to be confirmed by avast.

You misunderstood I think. I was referring to the Auto Sandbox issue being a majority of XP users
"For the most part this appears to be XP related" Exactly, I agree. ;)

I think it's just missing in the GUI but still active and working since the option to enable it is still there in the File System Shield settings. I have had no problem with the Icon rotation.

You may be right.
However, I do have a "continually spinning" icon on my Laptop XP. (AvastSvc.exe)
This is a first for me. AvastSvc.exe has never monopolised the CPU before. My Desktop XP has no icon issue.
I realize the icon spins when Avast is scanning, however I can't seem to tell what it is scanning, if that is indeed the case. ??? ???
Any ideas? :-\

Just an update.

The computer was off overnight and after I started it up the rotating icon is back.

Yes it is still there and in XP it appears the only way to access it is through the file system shield, expert settings, auto-sandbox. Whilst in my win7 netbook the auto-sandbox is still in the additional protection section.

I have the same issue of "constantly spinning Avast Icon" since updating from 1021 to 1027. ??? ???
Any ideas. :-\

I went back to 6.0.1000 and the "constantly spinning Avast Icon" has stoped on my XP Pro system.

I haven't found that at all on my XP Pro system with 6.0.1021 0r 6.0.1027. But wouldn't you have though investigation such as I mentioned above would be better to try and get to the reason/bottom of the problem.

I am going back to 6.0.1000.
I'll wait for the next release and then I'll try it again.

I only have the problem on one of my XP's. The Desktop is OK. ???

My comment was directed at YoKenny's post above mine as simply going back isn't going to help finding the cause for a resolution.

Well as soon as I load SpeedFan the avast! ball rotated like crazy as the File Shield was scanning its access to my hard drive's S.M.A.R.T. information retreval.

So both Acronis True Image Home 2011 and SpeedFan had problems! :'(

@YoKenny: I could never use SpeedFan in my Dell Vostro 1510 notebook at all... It does not detect the fans, it does not accelerate the fans. I've tried also the I8kfanGUI (DELL Notebook Fan Control Utility) but it ALWAYS freeze the computer if I change the speed fan.
So both are useless for me...

I don't use True Image, but do Use Drive Image (DI), but I don't allow that to run on boot as DI doesn't do incremental images. I just do a manual image backup once a week and I have another little tool called Mirror (mirror.exe) 112KB that I manually run several times a day (batch file) for backing up my data files, emails, bookmarks, etc. This as its name suggests mirrors your existing data files in an alternate location. So no problems as both of these are passive until run.

I used to use speedfan some years ago, but never felt it that useful, so I never kept it up to date and removed it. Surely you don't have it running all the time, but only on-demand ?

I saw this on the speedfan faq:
Quote
CPU usage goes very high and/or my screen shows odd things
This can occasionally happen if you have an nVidia video card and you are using some software combination. Due to the lack of documentation, the only option is to use the /NONVIDIAI2C command line switch when running SpeedFan. You can find further info about it in

Perhaps this might help you (If using Nvidia card/chip) as high CPU would be indicative of activity and avast being forced to scan that activity.

I don't have Nvidia graphics but I have SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio.

I have been in touch with the SpeedFan's author Alfredo Milani Comparetti and have received SpeedFan beta 14 that still exhibits the same high File Shields activity.
