Title: ** NEW (RC?) PRE-RELEASE REFRESH 6.0.1035 IS HERE **
Post by: Vlk on March 19, 2011, 02:41:06 PM
Now replaced by version 6.0.1044: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=74515

Hi everyone,

we will soon be releasing a new program update of avast. And as usual, we're making it available for public testing a few days before the official release. Edit: now updated to build 6.0.1035.

This is hopefully going to be a smooth service release, designed really just to fix some of the issues of the original v6.0.1000 build.

Here's the list of the most important changes:
- solved an incompatibility with ZoneAlarm (WinXP)
- improved installation of the WebRep plugins (especially Firefox)
- solved a crash condition in the avast sandbox
- setup programs now smaller by ~20%
- Community features and the Welcome screen can now be turned on/off directly from program settings
- solved an incompatibility with Outpost firewall
- solved a bug related to the AutoSandbox offer (WinXP)
- gadget can now be removed by simply closing it
- new setup icons

New in v6.0.1027:
- attempt to fix new compatibility problems with GameGuard and sXe _rootkits_
- SafeZone improvements
- localization updates (including WebRep)
- improved sandbox logging)
- SafeZone is now a standalone setup package (can be installed/uninstalled separately)

And new in v6.0.1035:
- solved Firefox WebRep plugin on non-English Windows
- solved a few incompatibility problems in BehavShield (e.g. TeraCopy)
- improvements in password processing
- improvements in the program uninstaller
- sandbox improvements
- fixed various UI issues introduced in the previous pre-release build

Download links:
snip

You can either install from scratch, or over an existing installation of avast (any version). Users of the previous pre-release builds (6.0.1021, 6.0.1027) can also use the built-in program updater.

Thanks
Vlk

Actually got the UI update prompt before the file was posted, after having checked a few minutes before and finding nothing new!

Updated from UI with no problems, also trying Outpost Firewall 7.5 public beta, no problems with compatibility between both.

Great job!

Autosandbox still holds my flash drive, not closing handles...I know Pk knows about this, but would be nice to hear more?

Is it really just me that has this problem?

Vista 32, avast Free

I can't use autosandbox because of this... :'( :'(

Updated Pro via GUI with no obvious anomalies except WebRep.  W7x64SP1.  In FF4RC2, functions but no ratings-may just be server down.  In IE9, as before, bar chart line is in GUI but not functional-you can't select it.  I have also noticed a couple of cases previously where programs were silently prevented from installing; suspending Avast! temporarily fixed the problem.  Will look for it more carefully in this build. Wondering if it could have anything to do with initially downloading them from a sandboxed browser, even though they are saved outside the sandbox, but ???

Yeah, the WebRep server seems to be down again which unfortunately isn't very good for testing the new update. Hopefully, it will be up again soon. Till then, the ratings will be gray and/or missing...

Updated from the 1027 UI Summary screen on my win7 netbook, got notification when I booted it up. Update appeared to be fine and system rebooted normally after update.

WebRep icon back in firefox (server seems to be up, green) and auto-sandbox now back in the Additional Protection list.

Updated from 6.0.1027 to 6.0.1035 via AvastUI.  As DavidR stated, AutoSandbox is back in Additional Protection.  Did a Quick Scan after rebooting.  So far, all seems well.

Good job, Alwil.

The icon on the Firefox interface is now green

Most complaints about grey icon come from webrep cannot connect to server issue. What's really need is a different way to tell users that the server has taken a nap yet again, instead of using the same icon for both no rating and cannot to server.  >:(

WebRep Icon back @ FF4.0 - still grey for known matter but looks promising after all!

Great support as always!

I installed last version 6.0.1021 (from stahuj.cz). And I have in avast! GUI warning that there is new version availible (6.0.1035). But when I will update It I will get same problems or not?

For those with gray webrep icon.

After enabling webrep my icon is gray. But... after closing and reopening IE9 it turns green. Restarting the browser seems to fix this. Refreshing the browser does not.

On previous page I got the answer.
Should be fixed in build 1035.

But I think I'd better wait for final release before testing it for this problem  :)

If you test it, please inform me by a private message, and other people - here.

OK, I am able to repeat the silent block of programs downloaded from Opera 11.01 in the sandbox.  Without Run Safer, Stopping the Avast! shields allows the program to execute.  I downloaded a zip file, went to explorer, unpacked and tried to execute it.  Started to run, then terminated.  So I turned off the Avast! shields and it executed normally. Settings are attached. So I tried to remove Opera from the sandbox, and it would not execute then.  Discovered Opera.exe had been corrupted in the removal process, so had to go to an image and get another copy to get started again.  Sandboxing browsers seems to have some problems???
UPDATE After cleaning up the mess, can't repeat the corrupting of opera.exe but will keep running sandboxed to see if it reoccurs.  The file I had problems with seems to just be something avast! doesn't like.  It is silently blocked until I turn off the shields, whether downloaded from the Sandbox or normally.   Haven't found anything in the logs or reports that explains this.  :(  I'll keep looking.

A question. In the SafeZone, under options I have "offer to save passwords" chosen however, this option doesn't appear to be functioning ??? Has never offered to save any passwords(log in info)when in SafeZone.
Unless I've missed something, save passwords in SafeZone is one of the issues discussed in previous posts.
Is this option functioning for anyone? Is it supposed to do what I think it is supposed to do..Save passwords used while in SafeZone. :-\
It would be great to be able to accumulate log in data(passwords)when in SafeZone...and have them saved there ;)

Yes, I seem to recall that discussion.
It would definitely be a plus to be able to save those passwords. :-\

edit: That's curious there would be an option to 'save passwords' located in the options within SafeZone, which obviously doesn't work. ???

This happened on the previous release also.

Well the script shield certainly doesn't seem to be as active it previously was. In XP it is showing 0/0, but if you run windows media player (WMP), boom it does its thing, 106/0. So it is certainly working.

In my win7 netbook it is showing 196/0 (now 213/0) and that is just in the few hours since I updated it and most of that time it will have been idle and I haven't run WMP.

I would have expected for WebRep to be working by now but no it is still greyed out

What's greyed out? FF in avast! GUI or the browser icon?

Greyed out on my Dells - see below
Seems okay on my Acer - see below

after one attempt to disable avast services (AV part) and clicking on cancel on self-defense module password prompt, stopping options don't appear anymore. Attempting to disable (as opposed to just stop), brings an "access denied".

edit: lol after disabling the self-defense module I could disable the service but avastsvc still runs ???

For those with gray webrep icon.

After enabling webrep my icon is gray. But... after closing and reopening IE9 it turns green. Restarting the browser seems to fix this. Refreshing the browser does not.

Not so in Firefox 4.0RC2 on an x64 when updating through the GUI or installing from the installer.

Uninstalled and reinstalled WebRep
Installed both FF and AIS from the installer without an uninstall.

WebRep remains greyed out on x64 computers.

The only time the script shield scans something for me is when i open windows media player.

I think we need a sticky to explain what Script Shield does and what File Shield does.

Avast white paper on scripting has a good explanation of the difference.

Probably more good explanations at Support.

WebRep now working on my Acer and one of my two Dells

It is working on the Dell in which I did a uninstall and reinstall of WebRep along with installs of both FF4 RC2 and AIS 6.0.1035 from the installers.

I will give it more time on the other Dell before I go through the same steps on it as I did on the Dell in which WebRep is now working.

Yikes! I guess someone had to have problems. (Why me?)

I installed 1035 from The 1027 GUI only to be greeted with a BSOD on restart. After trying Windows startup repair and a couple more reboots I uninstalled Avast completely. Then I downloaded the full version 1035, installed it from scratch, and got the same BSOD.

Undaunted, I uninstalled 1035 again, installed 1000,upgraded to 1035 from the 1000 GUI, and got the BSOD again.

Since I didn't save either of the intermediate updates, I'm back to ver 1000. FWIW, I'm running Win 7 Ultimate x64.

Any suggestions?

Installed this Beta and the icon for Avast is rotating continuously on my Laptop but not on my Desktop.

Is the system partition on your laptop formatted as FAT32?

No the File System is NTFS

Edit:
Just checked the Task Manager and AvastSvc.exe memory usage is running about 24,000 K and CPU is at 39+ with nothing open.

Yes cut out the middle man of installing 6.0.1000 and updating to 6.0.1035 - try a clean install of 6.0.1035 or stick with 6.0.1000. Ideally you should start your own new topic if you need further help so it isn't buried in this topic. Where we can try and help and gather information about your system and previous security applications, etc.

- Download the latest 6.0.1035 pre-release version of avast, from the links at the start of this topic and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).

I think I found the source of the problem.
I downloaded a program called Filemon and ran it.
It showed that my firewall (PC Tools Firewall 7)constantly accessing something and thus was causing Avast to be active.
I then uninstalled and reinstalled an old Sygate Firewall and now all is well so far.
If there are any changes I will post them later.

I had avast version 6.0.1000, i unistalled it and then i used also unistall utility in safe mode.( to unistall anything that had remain)
Above the installation of avast 6.0.1035, it hangs in finilizing part of setup.(failed in starting avast service).
After hard reset it works ok.
(i test installation 2 times it hangs on finilising, but after a hard reset it works the program)

When the final release come, the version 6.0.1035,will warn us about the new final version, or because it is prelelease, we must download the new version alone?

Sorry for my english and thnx for the program,

No, a major upgrade to Behav Shield is not to be expected before the release of the next major version (in about 1 year). And we're not going to start adding controls like Sensitivity level in the interim builds without substantial architectural changes, just to make users happy... doesn't make sense.

Thanks

ThreatFire is rather... err... broken to put it mildly (http://www.kernelmode.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=586), development is dead and you will be better off uninstalling it. Mixing this thing which hooks about everywhere with Comodo doesn't help either.

TF also overlaps and conflicts with avast's behaviour shield, already noted e.g. this thread (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=69820.0).

(a)First time encountered difficulty uninstalling AIS.

Uninstalled ver6.0.1027 via Control Panel I got an error (2x), disregarded it and went to SafeMode to use uninstall tool. Chose C:\Program Files\Avast Software and C:\Program Data\Avast Software and restarted. System will not boot got an error that Windows 7 failed to start and was giving options to "Troubleshoot" or "Start Windows normally". When you choose  "Start Windows normally" machine just restarts and restarts. I ended up doing an image restore.

(b) Does manual updating work for verson 6.0.1027 and this ver6.x.1035...?

I downloaded the manual update and installed it but got an error message that the vps update that I have downloaded is for ver6.0.1000 and I have to download a vpsupdate for ver6.0.1027 and ver6.0.1035.

When I click the VPS update Download at the left bottom corner I also get version 6.0.1000 update that versions 1027 and 1035 won't accept.

There is no information if manual updates will work for both or not.

Can you confirm this one please.

The program will tell you to renew the (still free!!) license. ;)

I updated my sisters' windows vista ultimate 64 computer yesterday from version 5xxx to version 6.0.1000 via GUI and my surprise is that Windows Vista took about 3 minutes to start.

I uninstalled 6.0.1000 with the current Avast uninstaller and then installed 6.0.1035 from scratch and the same problem continues... any one else having the same issue?

Update via GUI did not go well on my w7 64 bit machine.

windows wouldn't load after update/restart.

Repaired to last known good config.

Avast real time shields stopped and not acessible.

Uninstalled avast in Safe Mode.

Back to 6.0.1000 now.

(Webrep didn't uninstall from IE9 using program uninstaller or asw6clear).

I had that issue with the last few releases of v5 then to v6. For some reason updating Avast via the GUI seems to be hit or miss on Windows 7 x64, various shields sometimes don't work after the update. I had to uninstall Avast and reinstall the updated versions fresh and all the shields would work. Hopefully this is not a trend. Also I would like to see the settings kept from the previous version when upgrading via the GUI. For example I don't have webrep or the gadget installed and don't want them installed if I upgrade to a new version via the GUI.

I create a system image before I upgrade Avast now, I don't take any chances.

I'm running Windows 7 x64, yesterday using this build I had a BSOD relating to the file aswSP.sys (I think).  I say I think, because I only had a quick time to look at the file name before the system automatically restarted.  Of course, since the crash log was sent away to Microsoft and automatically deleted I can't check! This is the first every BSOD I have had since running Windows 7 (ever since it came out).

On a separate enquiry, I was wondering whether there is any use in Avast for the AVX instruction set on the new Intel Sandy Bridge CPU's and the upcoming AMD Bulldozer CPU's, and the FMA4, XOP, and CVT16 instructions sets which are also coming in with the AMD Bulldozer CPU's (Intel does not support FMA4, XOP, or CVT16).

Coming back from a short leave I saw there was white smoke over avast territory meanwhile.

Made an update from 1027 GUI and it worked flawlessly.
Uninstalled the whole thing completely and made a clean install, and it still worked like it says in the Handbook.
So no problems at all. Previous problems like "WebRep" and "Auto Sand Box" are not present anymore.

Everything works as advertised on my system.

-- I just came to ask again for any confirmation on the manual updates I have posted here......tsk..:( ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

When I download the manual updates from here http://www.avast.com/download-update
and then launch it. The new RC says it cannot be applied because of the version of the manual update is for ver6.0.1000.....

Are manual updates permitted for RC builds...? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

I have a PC that's not currently connected to the internet the reason for manual updates application.

Strange... does avast! icon spin during that?
Does it help to stop any of the shields?

yes it spins, disabling the file shield speedup the action noticeably yet not as fast as with avast completely off (no drivers loaded)

okay was about time ;D >>> downloading ;)
Today I saw notification of a new version.  I upgraded.  Since then I cannot get Explorer to work.  It locks up while trying to open.  I cannot get other programs to work either.  They also lock up while trying to open.

To make this post, I had to disable Avast! in order to access Explorer.  And I had to "Register" in order to access this thread (be able to notify someone at Avast! of this problem with whatever version replaced the previous).

What do I do now?  I am running the computer with Avast! disabled.  I saw no link in the new version that enables regression to the previous version that worked just fine.  Please, someone provide instructions!  My email is: fredericklambert@msn.com

My only other recourse is to trash Avast! and try another product, which I prefer not to do if I can quickly get resolution.

just on a side note because I'm not really interested by the feature, I just re-installed AIS from scratch (latest beta) and WebRep was immediately present in Firefox 4, with both the toolbar icon up and running + a rating in front of each entry on a Google search page ;D

Okay this said my main grievance about Avast 6 is that at least on my system - as others don't seem to complain about that - slows down Google Chrome especially. Chrome being my default browser, that's a bit annoying. No such issue with IE9 and FF4.

I got a strange latency when loading pages in FF4. Not sure if WebRep is responsible. Pages actually don't take more time to load as it usually happens when it lags, it's the loading that just stops one second in the middle of the process before resuming.

edit: no it's not webrep, I just disabled it and restarted FF4, no change... no idea where that comes from it just started after a new AIS install, and I haven't modified any default setting yet.

If you did a clean install then you wouldn't be benefiting from any previous versions persistent cache, hopefully that would over the next few scans restore the scan speed. Ensure that the Full Scan Performance settings use the 'Speed up scanning by using the persistent cache' and the 'Store data about scanned files in the persistent cache' options.

first full scan is taking too long to complete; it use to take 40 minutes here, now it's already been 52 minutes since I started it and it's not over...

thanks for the tips ;D ... chances are that I've noticed the existence of the persistence cache since October last year :D >>> I was talking about a first full scan, I've been through many new installs of Avast 5/6 and yes... I also noticed what happens the next times, ie once the persistence cache has been populated :)

ps: if needed when I compared 40 to 52', that was comparing two very first full scans following new installs ;)

this should have not been included in the pre-release information: a few days before the official release.

hasnt it been like 2-3 weeks  ???

I'm sure you did notice, but as far as I'm aware the default Full Scan settings don't gather the data to populate it 'Store data about scanned files in the persistent cache' isn't checked.

that's forgetting that I changed these settings before launching the full scan... but okay, now I remember that I mentioned using AIS with default settings just after the install... with the exception of the full scan settings ;)... I should have said that but still that's still comparing apples to apples, as I always do it the same way, check both "create" ...and "use" for further scans.

Full scan of 124.2 Gig took 42 minutes.  I can't tell there's a slowdown on my scans.  Seems the same to me.

Your computer looks similar to mine in power

My Nightly Scan results from last night

Amout of data tested: 167.6 GB
Run time: 24:50

Is your disk drive fragmented?

Yes I can't understand why both aren't checked as one without the other seems a bit pointless. But I understand that for some systems with limited resources enabling the 'Store data about scanned files in the persistent cache' option might be a bit heavy.

@davidR: they want to keep the settings separate for one reason, be able to just populate the cache and not use it with your next full scan, meaning a deeper scan for security concerns. This makes the following full scans longer but no big deal as you won't run a full scan everyday, while shorter scans like the quickscan are set(at default) to use and not create, making them as fast as possible and using the job achieved by the full scans.

Okay this said I don't follow these default rules as I described it.

ps: following full scans, if respecting the default settings, will still be shorter because even if they won't use the persistence cache that they created previously, they don't have to create it again.

No, it shouldn't be too bad.  By using Rollback I can't use another defrag regularly.  It has one and I use it often.

I'm curious now as to why the longer time.

Thanks for the heads up.

So uncheck the "Store" (second of the two)?  I don't understand what happens by just checking the first option then?
