Ok, we have a market share here (http://marketshare.hitslink.com/browser-market-share.aspx?qprid=0).
But I would like just a vote in the browser that avast users use most.
Hey... This is NOT a thread for discussing browsers or which one is the best.
Just a poll about the number of users. Please, vote :)
-
Firefox for everything, with one exception: IE-8 for MS updates.
-
Trying out ie9 so far so good.
-
Voted chrome and I love it, it meet all my needs.
-
FireFox for me, i'm spoilt by the addons ;D
-
SeaMonkey for me--100%
Switching over to Firefox.
-
Firefox for me extensions, configurability, ease of use, etc. etc. I generally only use IE to check things out mentioned in the forums.

configurability, ease of use, etc. etc.
Obviously you're referring to Opera. ;D
-
Internet Explorer. I've tried all the others and none lasted more than an hour on my machine.
-
I voted Firefox. :)
I use Firefox and K-Meleon (Firefox with extra bells and whistles).
-
<snip>
configurability, ease of use, etc. etc.
Obviously you're referring to Opera. ;D
Absolutely not :P
I have tried Opera browser several times and have absolutely hated the interface, it hasn't survived more than a day on each installation. For me if it isn't broke then don't fix it or change it (a bit like avast really) and for me firefox does the job.
-
Really liking Internet Explorer 9.

Chrome but trying IE9...slick so far.
(The new Opera is looking better as well).
-
Internet Explorer 9! ;D
-
Thanks for voting guys.
I'm sticking with FF 4 and it really rocks... I love the addons :)
-
I use IE9 cause its fast and I can have websites like forum.avast.com pinned to the taskbar.

Firefox can do it with the context menu of the icon...
-
Thanks for voting guys.

+1 I'm always in loved with FF + addons as well and I cannot lived without FF ;D, sorry Microsoft you're IE9 is a sore looser

There is nothing stopping you doing that with any browser in windows 7, pin the browser to the taskbar and you can have the browser open any number of default pages when it opens. Firefox will open all previously open tabs when you closed firefox last when it is started. That can be from a shortcut or from being pinned to the taskbar. So there is nothing unique about IE9 being able to do this.

You're the looser stuck on XP. ;)
-
Internet Explorer 9! ;D
Especially IE9 64bit. 8)
-
Use mainly the fox
But also use safari and ie9(4bit)
And thunderbird for my pop3 account
-
IE 9 for me ;D

Sorry YoKenny I'm moving over to W7 Pro soon and IE9 will still become a sore looser while I'm still using FF as always, beside IE9 are for arseholes because we can get better protection with extra addons in FF and you're out numbered YoKenny ;) IE9 are for little puppy dogs.
-
Firefox 4.0 RC2 all the way. Already got my vote.
I also use Chrome sometimes but overall I prefer Firefox because of security of browser itself and the add-ons (like NoScript).

Chrome has features similar to NoScript too, but Built-in :)

-
Firefox!
-
IE 'cos I don't have to rummage around for addons to make it functional ;D
-
Opera!
The only way I would make IE9 my default browser is as 64bit.
But the 64bit version can't be made the default. ::)
I'm using the the 64bit version of FlashPlayer (beta),
but it doesn't work in all FlashPlayer applications.
Full FlashPlayer use would be required as well as ShockWave.
It will be years before IE would meet my demands. ::)

This is why I hate FF (with my malware removal hat on) Spot the redirect bad add on

I use Flock browser. 8)
-
Firefox,a bit dissapointed since plugin-container uses more than 10% cpu or so :'(
-
Firefox for me :)
-
I voted for chrome for its lightning fast speed.
I still use firefox for most of my file downloading purposes. IE for MS products that require validation. Opera for my university's internet.
-
The proportion is being kept since the beginning of the poll.
Seems that forum users, who read more about programs, who have different opinions, have their own preferences that does NOT match the market share ones.

Well, that is somewhat expected, I think. Most here are quite techie, and would understand what you meant by browser, but I suppose the market share represents the more typical user better. Most people simply use IE because it is there when they buy the computer. The only way that they would know other wise is the Browser Choice selection thing (I believe this was EU only though...never could understand the reasoning behind going after that decision...) But having other options would just confuse things further for the typical user...imagine trying to explain what the browser choice window was, and then what a browser was over the phone to someone whose knowledge reaches as far as searching on google...
This poll also highlights one other thing. The "best" browser is (in a similar fashion to AV's) a very subjective thing. It is more down to your experience with the browser...and as for security, while people seem to definitively say that IE is not safe, I think it is more down to browsing habits, common sense, and the fact that simply, it has a higher user base, so obviously, out of all infected people, it will feature more...I don't generally think that one browser is safer than the other...
essexboy, I would guess at one of the many (no name found) ones? Is it because it uses the long strings of numbers and letters that makes it harder to spot?
-
Google Chrome which I voted for when this poll first came out.
I thought this was for voting only not discussions ???
I guess I read something wrong... ;D

Google Chrome all the way. I am impressed with IE9 but still hasn't got the speed of Chrome. I have Firefox installed but it is far too slow.

Firefox. I've tried all the other popular browsers, but none are as fast as Firefox, I don't know why, but it's the fastest. I also like Adblock Plus for it.

Chromium, nightly builds on Windows and current on Debian Squeeze.

I voted for Google Chrome.
I don't like firefox because the beta crashing every few second - typed in ulozto.com - crash, typed in youtube.com - crash. (I Guess that only my problem)
-
danny96, ask for help on Mozilla forums. The RC crashed only once in my machine. I used it all the time.
Firefox + addons are the best combination for me :)

Debian Squeeze.
Read (http://www.hackinthebox.org/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=40552) that it is not that good, what is your experience?
Well, no problems here on my workstation nor on my few Debian servers with the 6 version.

Debian Squeeze.

It's a rubbish review.
Yes you need to install some firmware, but it's not hard.
Apart from that the only criticism of Squeeze is that the screenshot program didn't work. Very lame, And the error encountered ("Failed to execute child process... no such file or directory") I've only ever seen on failing hardware, so it could be the testers HD is borked.
Posted from a very stable Debian Squeeze installation.
Sorry for the off-topic, Tech.

I would upgrade to windows 7, and bought it off ebay, but my video card wasn't supported, and I couldn't play games, and stuff like that. Why upgrade to Windows 7 just to get IE9, when Firefox 4 is just as good, or better? ??? Windows XP just works.
-
but my video card wasn't supported, and I couldn't play games, and stuff like that.

Sorry about Off-topic! ::)
You don't play the games known as MMO's on consoles. You need a computer.
MMO= Massive Multiplayer Online
Anthing a console can do, a gaming computer can do just as well and in most cases, better.
-
So now we have gone from a browser poll to discussing which is better, ps3/xbox/pc... ;D
Though, to be fair, being an xbox owner, I've had this argument many, many times...and nearly everyone I've spoken to is slightly wrong about it ;) (they forget that it is down to what a particular gamer wants from the system)
Back to browsers, I have been using FF4, but I have portable versions of the major ones (except safari, obviously) and one thing I noticed...The new FF4 (tab section at least) looks a lot like the opera tabs...
-
FireFox 4 the addons are so darn Useful
I also find Ford Motor Vehicles Useful but not while Browsing
Browser usage from February 2011 (according to w3schools.com):
Internet Explorer – 26.5%
Firefox – 42.4%
Chrome – 24.1%
Opera – 2.5%
Safari – 4.1%

Firefox 4 is the winner this time around.
The myth of Chrome being faster is this, a myth :)
-
They all seem pretty close in the things that matter. To me, the boot time test was done wrong. Who opens their browser with multiple tabs already set? I never do. They should have also tested them with a preset home page and no other tabs open since that's the way most people begin their browsing sessions.
-
Firefox 4 is the winner this time around.
The myth of Chrome being faster is this, a myth :)
Ok, chart says FF is faster, but what about the things I'm seeing in my eyes in action? FF interface has never been responsible alike Chrome, also stability, FF during rendering pages (without any addon) is unresponsible for 1-2 seconds, when FF is working it make HDD busy too much, never seen such thing in Chrome, also in a page with lots of animated graphics (.GIF) FF almost use over 80% of CPU (until scroll up/down to get away from graphics) but Chrome does (even IE has not this problem). So how they call FF faster? How people keep using FF?
-
when FF is working it make HDD busy too much, never seen such thing in Chrome
??? hmm... no offense but I see just the contrary here ;D Firefox is still way too slow at startup, but once it's up and running, it is at least as fast as Chrome. As to extra hard disk activity while browsing, launching a link in a new tab etc... I do see that in Chrome daily, and already reported that on their bug tracker btw. Firefox doesn't have an issue like that and never did. On my system it comes from one thing and nothing else in Chrome: the number of extensions... not one extension in particular, but the number of them. The more loaded, the more swapping to HDD happens when browsing... and strangely this doesn't slow down the browsing.
At the opposite, a big number of extensions will slow down the startup of Firefox (especially on 3.*), but will never affect the browsing behavior (speed, hdd swap).
-
I agree that having too many Extensions installed in Chrome slow it down during startup as they need open in separated process, so if you use things like multiple on-access protection or security tools like SpywareBlaster it will be worse (yeah it really slow things down!).
But during navigation, Chrome is really fast and light for me, but Firefox is TOO slow. so maybe it's based on different hardwares and Different software configuration we have.
-
yeah I didn't mention Chrome startup times, very much affected by the number of loading extensions, but not as much as Firefox is ... (just talking about start up here).
-
Firefox will always be at a slight disadvantage against IE as far as startup goes as much of IE is embedded into the OS and already loaded. Of the many times I have tried Chrome I never had it installed long enough to really measure start times (never really got on with it at all), so I can't say.
I start firefox once a day and that usually has 3-5 tabs opening (ones that I had loaded when I closed it), so I really don't worry about its initial start time of about 12-15 seconds with my various tabs and a shed load of add-ons.
Personally, speed isn't everything and they are all much alike in many areas or the time differences really aren't that huge. Our systems are however unlikely to reproduce these results as they aren't unencumbered test bed systems.
People choose browsers for different reasons, some simply because that was what they had installed. For me it has to suit how I work and my requirements.
-
yeah, thing is Firefox has by far the slowest startup times and that's not good, even if there's been improvements since 3.*, ie FF4 starts a little faster. This said IE9 starts instantly, while Chrome and Opera are close to that. I don't keep a browser opened 24/7, not even during a whole windows session, applications are meant to be closed and reopened at will. Oh yeah... the worse with FF3/4 startup tmes are cold startup... Mozilla is aware of that... they're supposed to be working on it...they might make it on FF7 ??? ;)

It is true. It starts almost instantly, so does chrome.

Not the first time for me. From the second and beyond, yes.

Yup, cold start is a bit slower(A second?) but not too much.
-
yes I spoke about that once with someone from Mozilla, about the amazing startup times of IE9, and the guy hinted that IE9 might get pre-loaded when booting Windows... I'm not saying that it's the case, that is just possible. This said I can't see anything in task manager proving that.
-
For me nothing starts any faster than Opera. Having said that, Chrome is my default browser.
While I'm using the cr-48 laptop Google was good enough to send me, Chrome is also my only choice. ;D
-

That's due to Win7 Pro x32.
On Win7 Pro x64 IE9 64-bit Edition starts instantly and so does IE9 32-bit Edition that I hardly use anymore.

I filled out an application last year when the announced the pilot program and was surprised in Feb, 2011

...The only thing that I don't like on it is the keyboard.
Why? Is it different to a normal keyboard?
Also, didn't you have a link ages ago for an early version of the chrome OS?
Is there still an iso option or is it ONLY with the laptop?
-
I was told it's like the keyboard on an apple laptop.
Don't really know since Apple hasn't sent me a test laptop.:)
I'll have to wait till I get home to look for the iso you asked about.

Like apple in terms of layout, or design?

I use IE9 the most cause of ActiveX filtering, and Tracking Protection! ;D
I use firefox because it has Zero activeX (not just filtering), the same is true of Chrome and Opera. Not sure what you mean by IE9 Tracking Protection, but they all also have Private Browsing I believe.
IE9 will offer consumers a new opt-in mechanism (“Tracking Protection”) to identify and block many forms of undesired tracking.
“Tracking Protection Lists” will enable consumers to control what third-party site content can track them when they’re online.
Aside from Firefox 4 also a similar function it/they are currently pointless right now as a) the user has to enable it and b) the third party site has to agree to the policy. If it doesn't there is nothing to stop it from gathering data or tracking, etc.
So currently this feature is a bit of a busted flush.
-
ActiveX as a feature? No! Any other browser, please!

I have no problems with Active X and actually think it's been a boon to the computer world. Just because something has been attacked a lot doesn't mean it's bad. It could mean it's good and very widely used so becomes a target.

Sure. Agree. But the technology of using such a swiss cheese, full of holes, is difficult to understand. Technology could have passed through it as a "bad experience", imho.

I absolutely love their killbits "fixes". Oh, there's a giant security hole there, there, there and there? Well, lets add a registry key to "disable" it. Now, all you have to do is to re-enable it. For sure no problem to flip the switch for any malware out there. But it's fixed, see... this KB says it. Fixed. ::) >:(

So good and widely used that 40-50% of browsers in use in some markets don;t even support it.
It was very useful for in-house business systems, which is why the British government for one is still stuck with IE6 because they can't afford to replace the in-house systems. For this reason, IE6 is still around and holding up the development of the web.
ActiveX was attacked a lot because it had zero security and allowed 100% access to the host computer- yes, it really was that naive, but remember this is a company that shipped an operating system without a firewall. The attitude was "sure, have complete access to the system, see what you can do." Of course it turned out that that attitude meant their systems were getting pwned and they rapidly had to start thinking about adding security. Even after that security was in place, ActiveX flaws allowed computers to be compromised.
In short, it was bad, it's better now (in that its security, although not 100%, at least is much tighter than it used to be), but it's not widely used on the web any more (who can afford to turn away 40% of visitors?), and some of the institutions who have used it regret (http://www.computerweekly.com/blogs/public-sector/2011/03/ban-the-microsoft-virus-govern.html) it.

MS can whinge as much as they like and try to have people abandon IE6. But that doesn't rid them of their commitment to support IE6 (as insecure as it might be) until April 2014 because IE6 was an integral part of XP, which they have to support until 2014 (provided it is running SP3)
-
...which they have to support until 2014 (provided it is running SP3)
Well, SP3 also includes updates to the browser. ;)
-
Yes it does, but without SP3 no XP security updates and that includes security updates for IE6. I Don't know if XP SP3 update converted IE6 to IE6 SP3 or not...

While I agree with you, Tech, explain to us why anything Adobe is still in use?
Their programs, as a whole, are so full of holes they couldn't even be considered swiss cheese.

As for Reader (which most people use) - absolutely no idea. Ditched it for everyone I install a computer for a loooong time ago. They usually ask whether it has "Adobe" installed, I say yes and they happily use the alternative reader (usually PDF XChange Viewer) or Foxit on really low spec boxes.

PDF XChange Viewer and Foxit Reader have far less security bug problem compare to Adobe Reader every time we get another Adobe Reader patch update, I strongly prefer to stay right away from Adobe Reader because they have to many problem patching their security update just stick to PDF XChange Viewer or another product that has far less problems.

Firefox...Fast, have a lot of useful add-ons and also safe :)

If you use the Google Chrome Browser, you don't need anything else just open the pdf in your browser.
It's built into Chrome and safe to use.

I have never opened PDFs in a browser since I knew that that could be exploited (many years now) and is still something that I wouldn't advise, no matter how chrome supposedly deals with them to make it safe.
In downloading them for off-line reading they will be scanned by the web shield and file system shield.
AS this poll show not everybody is using chrome.

lol yeah, I've opened pdf in browsers tens and tens of time, using mostly Adobe reader plugin, even in Chrome (although I recently switched to the integrated reader there but that's not my point... I'll probably switch back to the Adobe version anyway). Whether in Firefox or Chrome, never had a single infection. And on a side note, if a pdf was infected, I can see no reason why it wouldn't be caught by the web shield, just like it would be caught by the FS if saved to disk.
But yes, remains the possible re-routing to bad sites (or any other misbehavior of the browser) when viewing an infected pdf in the browser...okay...I've been using Adobe reader and flash player intensively for years. Heard of the repeated flaws like everyone here, never had a single incident.
-
I use the Flash Player because you pretty much have to to see everything. I switched to PDF-XChange mainly because it's more lightweight while still retaining all the bells and whistles of the Adobe Reader. I rarely open any PDF's and when I do they're usually downloaded user's manuals.
-
i normally use firefox but i am a bit disappointed in firefox 4. Some pages do not load fast like 3 did. I cannot open pdfs adobe or foxit pdfs in the brower, in firefox 3.016 i could. Some sites are locking up.
I installed ie9 and i am really impressed. Do you think Microsoft finally got it right? it loads super fast, opens pdfs, for websites that have not caught up to 9 yet you can put it in compatibility mode.
Until it gets hacked into I think i will continue to use it, I do like google chrome but it is very hard to bookmark and backup bookmarks.

I put MSE on my Windows 7 64bit because I wanted to use a 64bit antivirus. I've got a 64bit os so I want to use 64bit programs. ;D
With MSE on 7 64bit, I noticed that I wasn't having any problem with Opera. ??? http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=633812
So, I put MSE on my XP system. No Problem.
I like avast!, but not enough to give up Opera.
I think the problem is totally with Opera, never with any other browser.
I think vlk should get with the people at Opera to work on a solution.
BTW, I've gotten to like MSE better than avast!. :o
Back when I was with avast!, occasionally scans with mbam or SAS would find something.
Now Mbam and SAS don't find anything.
My conclusion is MSE is better than avast!. :o

Tech,
Back when I was with avast!, occasionally scans with mbam or SAS would find something.
Now Mbam and SAS don't find anything.
It's nothing personal.
-
That would rather depend on a few things, what MSE is finding now, what avast was finding previously and what MBAM or SAS was finding.
Me I have SAS Pro and MBAM free on my XP system and generally they don't find anything at all so in theory I could say they aren't working or aren't needed.
Weird isn't it ;D

Five Reasons You Should Switch to IE9
I need 1,000,000,000 of reasons ;D ;D
+1 ;D
-
Until they remove activeX, BHO's from IE and IEs deep embedding into the OS, then IE won't be my primary browser.
-
Firefox 4 and Chromium.
-
No one else uses SeaMonkey???
-
No, all land lubbers here I think ;D
-
No one else uses SeaMonkey???
Sorry... What is that? ;D ;D
-
Sea Monkeys are just brine shrimp. Just another marketing name. :-)
(I do know there's a browser by that name).
-
No one else uses SeaMonkey???
I used that and I like the idea behind it (all in one tools for advanced users), but finally I give up!
-
but finally I give up!
Why ???
-
Why ???
That's too classic, I'm not one of those to give up a program because of it's theme, but yet after a loot of customization I could not find it user-friendly. Add-on compatibility, The way menus and tabs works, problem with some plugins and some other problems. :-\
Another reason is that I don't use mail client in windows and only use web-based email for all my accounts(they are linked together), so I did not need mail feature :) , and for chat, I use that in web based client (meebo) so I did not IRC ;)... and last reason is that I don't like Mozilla anymore ;D
-
I'm dithering
My fave is still Opera but it is too strict and some banking sites do not like it.
I have been using FF a lot (now at FF 4)
IE 9 I have found to be faster than FF 4 :o
I prefer IE 9 tracking blacklist rather than FF4 and its trust in sites to co-operate
-
Opera for almost anything, Mozilla Firefox (quite as much as Opera nowadays) and (maybe) Internet Explorer (as a last resort) for browser oriented sites.
Apple Safari is quite nice though it's still buggy, it's a nice replacement for anyone who want a browser with WebKit engine but didn't like/want Chromium or Google Chrome.
-
<snip>
I prefer IE 9 tracking blacklist rather than FF4 and its trust in sites to co-operate
If you do a little bit of further analysis on this IE9 is actually using the adblock plus Easy list filter ;D
Which I'm sure you know AdBlock Plus is a Firefox add-on and you can subscribe to more blocking lists than just the EasyList selections, even better ;D
-
The poor customization always bring me back to Firefox :)

may be time to update your filters David, as the EasyList is no tracking blocker, while the EasyPrivacy list is.

80% of Browsing via Safari on Mac OS X. I do use Firefox when using Windows for the other 20%
-
My browser rankings:
1.google chrome
2.firefox
3.IE9
4.K-Meleon
5.Opera
Those are my top 5 browsers for me google chrome is the fastest and most fast-paced upgrade, adaptability, stability, and compatibility.

If I could get IE9 on this machine, I'd be using it. It works great on the Vista machine.

Google chrome

I must admit i used to use Firefox 3.5 but when i found Chrome i stopped using it as i just found it got boring the way everything was set out. As for the latest version of Firefox... Top marks!!!
-
I voted for Firefox. There other browsers? That's news to me. ;D
-
I would rank the browsers in their newest version this way:
1. IE9
2. Chrome
3. Firefox
4. Opera
Any others don't really matter. I'd also use IE8 before Firefox or Opera.
-
My ranking
1.Opera
2.palemoon
3.chrome
4.firefox
5.IE
-
This topic is about your favorite not your rankings.
Since we all have favorites, we'll also have different rankings. ;D
-
the first one in the ranking is the favorite one. but v shouldnt neglect other browsers too.
opera 11 had made a great impression on me. chrome was very good till v4-v5, but now chrome 12 is huge sized-160mb (even more than avast) and its not so fast except while viewing gmail. also switching from beta to stable channels is a problem. Palemoon is a modded firefox, plus its faster than firefox, occupies less memory and more tab handling than ff. IE cant be left out, some sites work only on iE, so its reqd!!

I am back to using Chrome and it really is much faster than IE9 & Firefox 4. For overall looks though i like IE9 the best.

So Firefox is better than Chrome?Pls don't change my favorite. My favorite and mostly used browser is Google chrome.
-
Currently, the best browser is the one you like the best. I will say however that Firefox needs a few addons to bring it up to snuff with either Chrome or IE9 out of the box.

A slightly skewed statistic, since they can only count the people who are not blocking google analytics. ;)

Whilst that would be correct (I certainly don't allow it), but I rather doubt that it would skew the figures that much, as your average user isn't even aware of what google-analytics does.

True enough, we are in a minority on that, I would imagine. Might cause single-digit% variance, at best.

I think more like a much smaller variance figure (even 0.1%) 1% in the world wide browser usage share would be an absolutely huge figure.
