Install avast 5 free and register through the avastUI, Maintenance, Registration.

However, why would you want an avast 5 free version key when avast 6.0 is the latest version ?

The free versions of Avast 5 or 6 don't need a serial key...Just put your emal in "Maintenance" "Register"  free version.... good for 1 year..But just put your email and info..they just need this to see how many people use avast and in case you need support...

If that doesn't help then go to the avast website register for a free license and the free license will be emailed to you. then enter that key in maintenance-register-offline register its that simple.

The last link in this post is how to register your Free Avast product while online (on the Internet) through the Avast GUI.

As mentioned earlier, why install an outdated version of Avast?  You can either upgrade to a newer version, or uninstall and do a clean install to a newer version. 

You do not mention what prior version of Avast you had on your machine. 
- If you had version 4.0, I suggest that you uninstall and do a clean install of Avast. 
- If you had version 5.0, then you can upgrade to 6.0.  If you have problems after the upgrade, let us know and you may need to do an uninstall and clean install.

How to do an Avast uninstall and clean install:

1. Save a copy of Avast 6.0.1000 and save it to your HDD.
http://www.avast.com/download-software (http://www.avast.com/download-software) – all versions - Select "Free"
2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear6.exe (http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear6.exe) and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for all Avast versions and products).
3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
4. Go to Control Panel and uninstall Avast through Add/Remove Programs if possible and reboot.
5. If Step 4 fails, boot into Safe Mode (http://Safe Mode) (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.  Uninstall  ALL previous versions and products of Avast at this time.
6. Reboot.
7. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
8. Get Internet access and register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro, or AIS.

9. Update the Avast definitions.
