What's the best free and safe Virtual Machine for testing antiviruses? BTW I also need installation files?

Oracle's virtualbox.org
+1
Although, VMware is also good and works better with some antivirus.

No. You need to register VMware server for free (like avast).
http://www.vmware.com/products/server/overview.html
You'll choose which is your operational system host and get the licenses you need.

so VmWare is also free?
but the VM's are not good because you need OS installation package. So If the oracle is free it's not technically free because U need installation for OS.

Care to explain what do you mean? ??? ??? ??? Yeah, you need to install an OS into the virtual machine, and it does not matter whether it is Oracle, VMWare or MS.

Yeah I mean that. OMG When I want Win7 I need installation package, when I need XP then Installation package, when I need ...blah...blah...blah I need installation package  >:( So  I will need downloading OS's from internet It takes pretty much space on disc

Yeah, and you point is? OMG indeed. The virtualization tool is free, OS may or may not be free. If you want free, install Linux or BSD.

WTF are you blurbing about? You get your install media and install an OS into the virtual machine (unless someone provides pre-prepared VHD images (some Linux distros do, e.g.) Go learn something about the subject and shut up meanwhile.  :-X

Yeah, apparently. So stop polluting this thread with absolutely useless posts.

Back to the topic: VirtualBox has more bugs and a lot of programs incompatibilities. VMware is much more reliable.
But I use VirtualBox due to its capacity of snapshotting.

Tech,

Vmware workstation needs to be purchased. Vmware server? - Didn't have a good experience with that. Virtualbox is enough for a person to get started, don't you think?

VMware Player is free and you can create the VM with it now. Providing a legit copy of the OS and validating is your responsibility on all of them regardless who makes it. The only exception is XP Mode available only for Windows 7 Pro and Ultimate XP is provided there. VMware is much easier to network that Virtualbox.

Something I just remembered about VMwarwe is right now some people are having issues with Windows 7 SP1 running and installing. Apparently SP1 changed something in memory management and that is the problem. I installed SP1 on Host and Guest and haven't had any problems. I'm not a heavy user either I mainly use them to test software before installing and to run some old stuff that won't run on Windows 7 64 bit.
I used to use the MS one on XP and it was kind of doggy I don't know about the new version.

This points out one very important flaw in what it takes to be an Evangelist.
danny96 obviously has very little computer experience judging by the last few posts regarding
Virtual Machines.
Since the Evangelist status is reached simply by the number of posts,
the status actually has very little meaning.
It's also very confusing when inexperienced users come here for help and
receive incorrect advice from so called "Evangelists"
Maybe rank needs to be reexamined ???
What are your thoughts ???

@danny96,
Sorry to use you as an example but I'm simply trying to get a point across.  :'(

Maybe this ought to be in a new Topic ???

Yes i agree with you, maybe the only one who deserves to be evangelist is essexboy as well as david of course, polonus, pondus and some more. That's my oppinion. To be honest most of us can only help some1 with mbam, not rly kind of skill.I've learned many things from that forum,i joined on july i think and since then my knowledge about malware etc has been increased.Love avast :)

May i ask what are the requirements to set up a virtual machine?

Look at the site where you are going to download it. Some of it will depend on what guest you want to run. One gig RAM is pretty small divided between 2 PCs. I did run some on my old XP box to test slipstreamed disks with just 1 G RAM. Basically more memory is better.

Coming back,

A beginner's guide (http://www.howtogeek.com/56158/beginner-how-to-create-a-virtual-machine-in-windows-7-using-virtual-pc/) to virtual machines. (This site is awesome) But it is for MS virtual Pc. Worth checking though.

I run ubuntu from virtualbox, and I have to say it is quite simple. Liking Ubuntu as well ;D
I had done this before, but stopped because it was restricted in screen resolution but I have discovered how to fix that :)

Is it just me that finds the seamless mode really weird...(basically overlays the virtual machine so that it looks like applications running are integrated...if that makes sense...)

I'd say linux is the easiest way to start with VMs, easy to get installations files, and quicker to get running.

All most all of the linux distributions are free. But windows, you know they are not free. So go ahead and check out ubuntu.com, fedoraproject.org etc etc.
