Title: ODBC download error
Post by: snoopy on September 24, 2004, 12:19:00 AM
Hello all,

I'm new to this forum and to the free avast V4.1 home edition.

While downloading the virus protection I got this error message:

You don't have ODBC drivers installed or they are corrupted. Download them at http://www.microsoft.com/data/download.2htm

My question is:

I continuted the download without installing the driver my ps is running fine, but I don't know if I'm getting the protection?

The blue ball icon with the a set inside rolls when I send/receive mail or check the internet. Right clicking the icon in the tast bar says I'm updated? So is it working?

At bootup should I see avast logo?

When I save a message ( from OE)  or check something on my desktop by right clicking the icon or envelope I see a quick scan and then closes out.

Also, should I goto the MS site and get the download?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I recently wipe my pc clean

Hi snoopy
Welcome to the forum.
Please go HERE (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=7184;start=msg56701#msg56701) and follow RejZoR's advice.
His program is a great tool to have anyway so you might as well get it right now and fix your problem.

Thanks Bob. This has been a long week trying to figure out how to run avast. Avast does not have a uninstall option-can someone tell me how to remove all entries from the download.

Snoopy, but you only posted your question yesterday...
avast does have an option to uninstall into Control Panel > Add/Remove programs.
If you do not find it, your avast installation is very bad done.
If you need to manual uninstall, download this application: http://files.avast.com/files/eng/avclear4.exe

Yes, I know.

Avast is in add/remove-it was just a question :)

No uninstall option in start-programs?

Can you answer my question about the splash screen at startup?

Can you give me a safe link to test avast?

Thanks for the application I have a tech coming today and I needed to know these questions.

No uninstall option in start-programs?

Is it really needed? I think we must keep good applications and not remove them...  ;D

Can you answer my question about the splash screen at startup?

Can you give me a safe link to test avast?

I cannot understand it completely: did you have troubles on downloading or when you were installing avast? It's strange the ODBC error while downloading...
If the error were on installation, follow Bob's suggestion or see the link 'Settings' on my signature. Search (CTRL F) the word 'ODBC' and make the same changes in your avast4.ini file. You will change the storage method from ODBC to XML.  ;)

If you don't want to do this, just download the Microsoft drivers update  ;)

What do you mean? Test the avast protection?
Well, set 'High' sensibility and try to test with www.eicar.com virus test files  ;)

Sorry for the confusion.

This is the download I click on:
Download avast! 4 Home-English-
avasthttp://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html
inside the Avast link: http://www.avast.com/

When I click the the download a window appeared with the ODBC error with 'OK' option to close it-I continued the download at that point.

I looked for ODBC and it is on my pc. Somethings weird there and I will bring it up to the tech (my end not avast).

I really don't understand why it's so complicated to use avast? I had etrust and it was easy to install and run and has a splash screen at startup.

I think Avast is for the advance user, but still a very good product! Avast is still on my pc. I don't understand the 'fix' for the error I will do some more research on this.

Thanks for your time.

Why do you think this is a problem related to avast?
You're downloading a file and get the ODBC error, it's weird... You even have avast installed in your system at this time  ::)

I really don't understand why it's so complicated to use avast? I had etrust and it was easy to install and run and has a splash screen at startup.

It's not... sorry, you were not lucky for some reason but for me and a lot of users it was just download, install and love it!  8)

The fix for your error, which I do not understand yet, should be solved when you download MDAC 2.8 (the Microsoft ODBC drivers) and install the updated drivers...
Can you try?

avast is not only for advanced users... but you can be one, you can be an advanced if you stay asking for help and learning like all of us at the beginning  8)

I'm back!

I said the weird thing was on my end not avast  :) :)

I got the download from MS

Still no splash screen on startup? Etrust and other anti-virus software have splash screens at startup.

The only thing I noticed that was different was the icon that runs to the right of the avast icon in OE (the blue ball and envelopes) when I open OE was nolonger black.

Avast appears to be running correctly?

I checked this link out: http://files.avast.com/files/eng/avclear4.exe

And this is what it said:

How to delete the test file from your PC

We understand (from the many emails we receive) that it might be difficult for you to delete the test file from your PC. After all, your scanner believes it is a virus infected file and does not allow you to access it anymore. At this point we must refer to our standard answer concerning support for the test file. We are sorry to tell you that EICAR cannot and will not provide AV scanner specific support. The best source to get such information from is the vendor of the tool which you purchased. Please contact the support people of your vendor. They have the required expertise to help you in the usage of the tool. Needless to say that you should have read the user's manual first before contacting them.

Any options on this?

How do you post a print screen here?

Thanks again!

avast does not have it... In fact, I think it's a good idea not having this.
avast just show a spash screen when you start it (on-demand).

The only thing I noticed that was different was the icon that runs to the right of the avast icon in OE (the blue ball and envelopes) when I open OE was nolonger black.

Yes, can you check to scan both Inbound and Outbound mail.
Put a note into clean messages.
Send an email to yourself.
Do you see two notes: one for Inbound and other for Outbound.
Can you check this?

If it is too complicated, go to OE, right click a message (not open) and choose properties. Than Details, can you see two lines there?

X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0439-2, 24/09/2004), Inbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean

I checked this link out: http://files.avast.com/files/eng/avclear4.exe
And this is what it said: How to delete the test file from your PC
Any options on this?

I don't understand. That was for delete eicar test file and not to remove avast...
I'm lost, can you rephrase?

How do you post a print screen here?

I suppose you know how to make a print screen.
To post, just save the picture in the GIF format and when you're posting you will see the following screen. You can browse the file and post it!
Maximum size allowed: 150 Kb.

Okay! I thought something was wrong when the splash screen didn't appear-now I know.

Yes, avast is checking inbound/outbound mail (Right click the message-properties-details-message source) I use it all the time. And it's ticked in resident task settings.

I did a search for eicar at google and found this: http://www.trendmicro.com/en/security/test/overview.htm
I ran test and avast responded  8)

Does advast check for spam?

How do I remove my e-mail addy at this link? I tried to remove it and was unable.

In OE-tools-servers- incoming/outgoing mail is set to 127.0.01? My isp should be listed-correct?

Sorry for the confusion doing that a lot here :-[

I tried to change my profile it keeps asking me for my password.

Modify-removed e-mail addy-entered password-no password entered message.

Do I have to re-regrister here to make the changes?

Hi Snoopy - no, you do not need to re-register to make changes to your profile. Once you are at your profile page, you must enter your password in the box provided for the changes you make to your profile to take effect. This is needed so that no one else can change your profile. So, it is these steps ......

1. Go to your profile page.

2. Enter your password in the Current Password box.

3. Make changes that you want to your profile.

4. Click on Change profile button at bottom of page.

I hope this helps you!    :)

Questions collected from all previous posts (many of them  ::) )

You don't have ODBC drivers installed or they are corrupted. Download them at http://www.microsoft.com/data/download.2htm
My question is:
I continuted the download without installing the driver my ps is running fine, but I don't know if I'm getting the protection?

If you got that message when you tried to install avast!, then you don't have ODBC drivers installed or maybe you have, but those are corrupt... very easy to understand. Reinstalling would help.

Still no splash screen on startup? Etrust and other anti-virus software have splash screens at startup.

No there is no splash screen at bootup, it's really not needed. Why would anyone want that ? To even slow down your boot time ? Thanks, but no thanks ! However, if you must see that splash screen, you'll see when you start avast! Antivirus by right-clicking blue ball and choosing START avast! Antvirus from the menu.

No uninstall option in start-programs?

No, there is always Uninstall option in Add/Remove programs. That's always primary location where you should uninstall your programs...

No, it's not complicated at all. If my father can use it without my interventions and help, and believe me he is happiest man since he started to use it (that's what he keeps telling me and everybody else), then anybody can use it without any problems. If sometimes you have some problems, you can always come here and ask for help. These forums are best forums ever. Free for everybody, no matter are you using freeware version or Pro.

Can you tell me, does e-trust have forums like this ? Free phone support for everybody, e-mail support ? Best friends in forums ? No... so splash screen isn't some feature to be worried about I guess...  ;)

Quote
Does advast check for spam?

No, avast! is antivirus tool, not antispam or antispyware... there are other good programs that does that (search these forums for additional help on that subject). That's why avast! is the best. Concentrated to finding and killing viruses, that's what it's really for. It does only that (if you can use word ONLY), but it does it BEST !

Search for my reply number 8 in here:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=9;action=display;threadid=7350;start=msg58914#msg58914 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=9;action=display;threadid=7350;start=msg58914#msg58914)

It will give you better picture why we all like avast! so much...

Cheers !

This is a (very) late response to the original question.
Your OS is windows 98(se), right? If you have problems with Avast this may help/solve it.

- Remove Avast using the Avast uninstall util (http://www.avast.com/eng/download/programs/avast_uninstall_util.html)
- Reboot
- install the latest MDAC drivers (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6c050fe3-c795-4b7d-b037-185d0506396c&displaylang=en) and JET drivers (http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/3/9/4393c9ac-e69e-458d-9f6d-2fe191c51469/Jet40SP8_9xNT.exe)
- Reboot
- Install Avast
- Reboot

As I said, this is if you have Windows 98(se) and are having troubles.. If you have a NT based windows and/or don't have troubles with Avast running correctly, forget what I told here. ;)

Hi snoopy,
I'm glad to see that your problem is finally solved. ;D As far as the posting goes, avast! 4 Home/Pro is usually for problems directly related to avast!.
In this case, this particular problem should probably have been posted in the Genereal Topics Forum.
Have a nice day and enjoy avast! and these Forums. :)
