Title: why does the root avast not updated even thought the normal user is updated?
Post by: freudenstachel on March 29, 2011, 05:09:29 AM
hi! im a new user of ubuntu 10.10.
i installed avast and updated the virus database by going to Applications>Accessories>avast!antivirus.
it was updated and i was able to scan my system with it as a normal user.
however, when it tried to open it using Alt+F2 and entering "gksu avastgui",
it says that the virus definitions are not yet updated.
why did this happen?

im running on a liveUSB because i want to scan windows computers using root.

and is there a way to fix this other than updating using root? i want to save space because my usb only has 1GB space for files other than the ubuntu os.

Hallo,
there's apossibility of per-user database. When you updated as user, this one was updated, and later, root's incarnation used the system-wide (not updated) one. That's the explanation.

oh, i see. so is there a way to make them use the same vps file?
i dont have much space so any disk saving stuff can help.

and also, is there any advantage to scanning my system with root aside from scanning root directories?
will it have a difference if i scanned windows systems?

thanks for the reply!

Hallo,
yes, is - when there's no user-file, engine  automatically attaches to the already-running global shared vps.

Also, you can make a link from the user's place with 400.vps to the global one.

Man ln :). Just look where's your 400.vps in your home directory, and then, place a link there, pointing to the global (write-protected, root's, maintained fresh one).
