Title: Installation error: usiGetSkin failed!
Post by: Volans on September 27, 2004, 10:56:34 AM
Hi,

I have a problem with the installation of Avast4, I can't open the main window of Avast4!
When I try to run the main window of Avast4, appear a little box and the program perform a memory scan. After, a message tell that the program now auto-restart, but appear only a box with:
UNKNOWN ERROR
The program can't load the skin. The function "usiGetSkin" is failed.

I have:
Avast! version 4.1 Home Edition (4.1.418 Jun2004), italian version
AMD Athlon 500 MHz with 256 MB of RAM
Windos 98 Second Edition

Previously I had NortonSystemWorks 2002 installed, I have removed NortonAntiVirus and leave the other programs of the SystemWorks suite.

I have read the FAQ of the program and ALL the topics on this forum about this error, and I have try all these solutions:

1 - registering the dll with the command "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX". The box with "DllRegisterServer in ACTSKIN4.OCX succeeded" appear regularly.

2 - Check if the registry key "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0944D16C-D0F4-4389-982A-A085595A9EB3}" exist and have a subkeys.

3 -  Go to the SKIN folder of the program and double-click on a skin icon. Also with new skin downloaded from the Avast site.

4 - Go to "Add/remove program" and click on avast, then perform a Repair or an Upgrade.

5 - Disinstall and reinstall the program

but none of these has worked...  the error still remain!! :-[

Anyone have another solution that i can try???

Many thanks to all that have read until here!  :)  ;)

Well, you've tried the most common solutions for the usiGetSkin function failure.
I think the problem is related to NortonSystemWorks 2002 or, better, NortonAntiVirus.
Remove it is one of the most difficult things in the earth  :(
Try to download 'Control' in my signature, run it and browse for 'Norton uninstallation'.

Although you have already tried, please, try again to repair avast ("Add/remove program").

I've read your post since from the begginning but I could not realise how to help you... Sorry  :'(

I know it's not exactly the same, but you can see that other avast problems could be solved by completelly Norton uninstall: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=7565  ;)

Thanks you for the replies and the suggestions!!!  :D  :D

I don't want to uninstall completely the Norton System Works, for this reason I have uninstalled only the Antivirus component.

I have checked in the Windows Registry for keys such as NAV, Symantec and similar, and I have found over 100 match!!
Now I'm not sure that the System Works still work if I delete them.
What the "Norton Antivirus 2004 uninstall" of your Avast External Control exactly do? (note that I have the 2002 System Works)

Even if often Norton create conflictual situation, I think that this is not a Norton related problem, because is only a Skin loading problem and the Avast scan (mail, memory when I try to load the program and single file right-clicking on it) work properly.

But if You think that this is the ultimate solution, I will try it !!!  ;)  ;)

P.S. at this time I can't try the Repair solution, because I have uninstalled Avast, but previously I have tried it twice.

The easyest solution to this problem is to FULLY uninstall Norton Systemworks. You can get the uninstall directly from their site or click on the link in my signature and find it there.
Once Norton has been fully unistalled, reboot the system and re-insall Avast.
Once Avast is running properly, do a selective install of Norton System Works making sure not to install NAV.
Good luck. :)

I have the same (all except NAV) and I did exactly what Bob is saying... I cannot add a word to this. I'm almost sure it will work like a charm.

If you do not want to do this, you can try the standalone uninstall tool of Symantec and try to remove NAV. It won't be easy. If you manuall delete the keys you can mess your NSW installation, at least, part of it...

What MS Office do you have, I mean, the version?
If you install the last MDAC drivers from Microsoft, will it help? I think MDAC is on version 2.8   ::)

The symantec site (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nsw.nsf/docid/2001090708472107?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=) with the instructions for the manual uninstall of NSW2002 for Win98SE say:
Code: [Select]
Part 2 - Remove NAV 2003
If you previously installed Norton AntiVirus 2003 (this program is included as part of the Norton SystemWorks suite), run the Rnav2003.exe removal utility to ensure that all components of previous versions of NAV have been uninstalled... ... NAV 2003 cannot be uninstalled manually.

Then I have downloaded and run the Rnav2003.exe removal utility, reboot, and install Avast again.... always the same problem! :(

Quote
What MS Office do you have, I mean, the version?
I have office 2000 installed.

Quote
If you install the last MDAC drivers from Microsoft, will it help? I think MDAC is on version 2.8
I have also installed the 2.8 version of the MDAC drivers, but this not help me! :(

Finally I have try this:
1 - uninstal Avast and NSW2002
2 - reboot
3 - manually delete ALL the registry keys, files and folder such as Norton, Symantec, NAV and Avast
4 - Reboot
5 - Install for the LAST times Avast4
6 - Start -> Run "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX"
7 - Reboot
8 - Try to open the main window of Avast

RESULT:
Quote

UNKNOWN ERROR
The program can't load the skin. The function "usiGetSkin" is failed.

Sorry... but Avast won't work on my PC! :-[

One of the reasons because I've choised Avast, is that I need an SMTP and POP3 antivirus checker, since I use Mozilla as mail client.
Now I'm forced to try AVG.
The new version of free AVG (expexted for november, now there is the beta version) has this function too.

Thank you for the attention and the patience... but the evidence is that this program is not for my PC, even if we have not understood the cause.

Best regards,
Volans

P.S. I will return to check new messages in the next days, therefore if you have other suggestions... post it and I will try them! :D :D

Did you just try to download another skin, double click the file and see if you get avast! working?

I have tried also this, with two different skins, downloaded into the skin folder of avast, double-click... and...

UNKNOWN ERROR
The program can't load the skin. The function "usiGetSkin" is failed.

What is step 6 in your outline of the procedure you followed?
What was so hard about following the outline I had given you?
Title: Re:Installation error: usiGetSkin failed!
Post by: Volans on September 29, 2004, 07:55:57 PM
It is the step 1 in my first message:
Quote
1 - registering the dll with the command "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX". The box with "DllRegisterServer in ACTSKIN4.OCX succeeded" appear regularly.
this procedure is explained in the FAQs.

Nothing hard, but I had reason... it isn't a Norton problem.  ;)

Volans:
Please don't get angry. We (me included) would like you to be part of this group and that means being able to use Avast! without any problems.
Have you ever tried to completely uninstall avast! using the avast! Uninstall Utility? If you have not, please try it, REBOOT,  and then just do a simple install of avastwithout any extra steps and see if avast then works for you.
You can find the Uninstall Utility thru the link in my signature.
Thanks for your patience. :) :)

I have used the uninstall utility yesterday, but I don't remember if NSW was still installed or not.

Then I have try another times to uninstall, reboot and reinstall avast.
For this attempt I have downloaded the english version of the program. The installation succeded like the other times, and also the same error appear when I try to start Avast window. :-\\

Thanks,
Volans

P.S. I think that are no differences between the normal uninstall (Add/remove program -> uninstall avast) and the uninstall utility when both works, because the utility is needed only when there is an installation error and the normal uninstall don't work.
Moreover both these uninstaller leave some registry keys in the windows registry. I have try also to leave them and to delete them, before reinstall avast.

Another little remark, if you allow... :o

Your forum work fine, before the registration I have found various suggestion to solve my problem and since the error still remain I have posted, and received various reply that tried to solve my problem.

Thank you for all! ;) :)

But the Techsupport of Avast is very poor! :(

I have wrote them a mail nearly the same of my first post here, in particular I have wrote:
Quote
V> I have read the FAQ of the program and ALL the topics on the support
V> forum about this error, and I have try all these solutions:

V> 1 - registering the dll with the command "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\REGSVR32.EXE
V> ACTSKIN4.OCX". The box with "DllRegisterServer in ACTSKIN4.OCX
V> succeeded" appear regularly.

And the Techsupport have replied only this:
Quote
Hello,
 1) Select START -> RUN...
 2) In the row write this command:
    a) If you have Windows NT or 2000:
    C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
    b) If you have Windows 95, 98 or Millenium:
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
    c) If you have Windows XP:
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
 3) Press OK (or Enter).
 4) Message saying that the file was successfully registered should
    appear.

I must deduce that they don't have read my message, but only the title?  ???

I don't know the relationship between this forum and the techsupport, but surely this do not improve the reputation of Avast...

Volans, you are great person... having so much problems and you're still here. That shows us (among the other things) that you are great man. You didn't give up on first problem you encountered with avast! and in my opinion, that wasn't some minor problem... that is something huge, 'cause you are unable to use avast! antivirus because of that.

I am the person (after Martin who is Alwil Team member) who made most of the skins for avast! Unfortunately, your problem is not skin related, but it is related to the program engine that runs skins. We should wait a little bit more to get some answers from Alwil guys.. maybe they have some other possible solutions for your problem. I remember that few people had exactly the same problem as you are having right now, but they followed instructions on this page:

http://www.avast.com/eng/support/faq/avast_4_home_profe/other_questions/i_have_installed_ava.html (http://www.avast.com/eng/support/faq/avast_4_home_profe/other_questions/i_have_installed_ava.html)

... and I remember, those simple instructions solved their problems. Something is really strange on your system, and it seems like those steps doesn't help at all.

Please be little more patient (if you can), and stay here... don't give up so easy, and please don't leave. We will find some solution sooner or later.. I'm pretty sure.

Cheers !

You could also post a hijackthis log, to see if there is something that could "disturb" Avast.
Here you can read, how to do create a log: http://www.hjt.klaffke.de/en .

Volans,

Hello, my name is Techie and I am one of the Senior advisors here on the forum.

Firstly, I am sorry that a solution has not yet been found, but your problem is one that we have looked at for others, and the instructions provided by Tech Support are correct.

Secondly, TechSupport via email is provided directly from the Avast development team (the vendor).  We here on the forum are avid users who have above average knowledge of Avast, installation procedures, and technical issues.

Thirdly, most of the users here mean well in offering help.
Unfortunately, there are times when the "help" is insufficient, or less than needed.
Be patient.  WE want to know why you have the problem just as much as you so we can help others.

Try something for me.  You have the Italian version installed.  Go into the Add/Remove utility, and select Avast.  Choose the option Change, and install the English version.  Reboot the computer and try Avast again.

Let me know "exactly" what happens.

Thank you.

How many replies... I'm very strucked! Many Thanks!!!  :D :D

@Technical:
I appreciate your efforts in order to help me, don't apologize, you have done a good job (many suggestion and is not your fault if the problem still remain)  ;)

your problem is not skin related, but it is related to the program engine that runs skins
@Craftec:
Sorry if I wrote that this was a skin problem...  and many thanks for the first part of the message... I only want to be able to use avast! or to understand why I can't use it!
Thanks for asking the Alwil guys... I hope that they have other explanations for this problem.
Even if I can't run properly Avast!, the mails are checked then I can wait some other days before give up!

@raman:
I run once a week AdAware SE, SpyBot and hijackthis. And I have also SpywareBlaster always updated. The checks say that all is ok.
It's hard to have Win98 SE up to date...  but I have intalled all the critical updates once they have been released.

@Techie101:
I have write my remark only for completeness in order to emphasize that this is a very good forum where many people tries to help others, thanks for your job!
In my tests I have installed the italian version, but yesterday I have try also this (after the NSW2002 uninstall):
1 - to go into the Add/Remove utility, and select Avast.  Choose the option Change, and install the English language
2 - download the english version in the avast! site and install directly this.
always the same....

I will wait... compatibly with my patience! ;) :D
Many thanks,
Volans

Volans,

On your behalf, I have contacted Avast Support directy and requested they research the matter.

Hopefully we all will get some guidance on this problem.

Sometimes, a bug develops that takes time to correct especially if the "known" fixes do not work.

Hang in there.  Let's see what answer we get back from the Avast Team.

Ok?

I think i have found out what causes this problem, i just ran a Spybot SD scan with latest updates & it found something called Brainbuster Brainbot, when i expanded the branch i saw it mentioned activeskin, so to test it i told spybot to fix it, then i ran avast & got the same error the original poster got.

Installation error: usiGetSkin failed!

I then tried to restore using spybot's recovery option & still got the error, so i then rebooted & then did a repair on Avast & that fixed it

Here is the entries from spybots log

Did Volaris run spybot in the past couple of days?

Seems spybot gets a false positive on this, im pretty sure it is spybot, but i also run prevX home & got the latest updates for that as well, Just out of curiosity, does Volaris run PrevX as well?

If it is spybots fault, it might be an idea for Avast team to notify Spybots makers about it

Hope this helps :)

Hi BanziBaby,

Yes I have SpyBot S&D 1.3 and I run it regularly every week. I have runned it two days ago, but I have deleted the restore "files" of SpyBot, then I can't try to restore it and I don't find the log.

I don't have PrevX.

I have then searched manually in the windows registry the keys that your SpyBot have fixed, and I have found ALL of them, none of such keys was deleted by SpyBot or any other program.

Thanks, but the mystery continue...  :o

BanziBaby - it's not because it's Spybot's fault, because Brainbuster Brainbot is not a false alarm at all.

See here what these people are doing... something completely different than we do in here:

http://www.ilusion-free.com/forum/index.php (http://www.ilusion-free.com/forum/index.php)

and also here:

http://www.zone-h.org/en/forum/thread/forum=3/thread=416815/ (http://www.zone-h.org/en/forum/thread/forum=3/thread=416815/)

and please take a look in here what these useless idiots that don't have anything good to do in their lifes, are talking about:

http://zone-h.org/en/forum/thread/forum=3/thread=417155/ (http://zone-h.org/en/forum/thread/forum=3/thread=417155/)

Btw people, isn't there any possible way to track them down ? They are talking about taking over some servers, computers and stuff like that... as far as I'm informed, that's a computer crime, nothing else... Kubecj ? Vlk ? Igor ?

Btw, BanziBaby, it's VOLANS, not VOLARIS  ;)

Yes, Craftec, i do know there is a real Brainbuster Brainbot, but if U look at the entries in the spybot log U can see there are four entries for activeskin, Avast is the only porg i use that uses activeskin, so it does seem that spybot is mistaking it for brainbot, it cant be a coincidence that spybot detects it & when U tell it to remove it, avast interface doenst load, only by restoring what spybot cleaned & then rebooting & doing a repair on avast got the interface to work again.

I have a secure system, i use Outpost Pro 2.1 with a very tight secure ruleset, Spybot, Spywareblaster, TDS-3 Pro & avast all updated with latest updates, i think it is the beta detection rules for spybot that causes the false alarm.

Im waiting for VLK of Igor to look at the log entries i i posted to see if they all belong to the activeskin components of avast.

Sorry for gettin Volans name wrong, but i did make that post sometime between 4-5 am ;D

Hopefully one of avast team will reply & let us all know.

BanziBaby - sorry I didn't see those activeskin entries... But still, I run Spybot for so long time and it has never reported any of those files on my system. I don't know why, but here everything works great. Spybot is regularly updated, so no problems with that. I also have Ad-Aware Personal SE, Bazooka Scanner, and neither of those 3 ever reported something like that... I don't know, maybe it's something configuration related. Anyway, it should be checked with designers of Spybot which is already done I believe.

In the mean time, how can we help to VOLANS guys ? Alwil ? Is there any chance he can get those files needed for GUI to run properly ? I guess the easiest way is to uninstall avast! completely, and reinstal it again from the scratch... but, the problem is here - I think he already done that many times and it didn't help him at all... Any thoughts on this one ?

Cheers !

It looks like no one responded to my requests yet...  ::)

For now, Volans, let's start with this:

1.) completely uninstall avast! (no matter you already tried it)
2.) reboot your system
3.) clean all registry keys regarding avast!
4.) reboot again
5.) perform clean install of avast! one more time.

See what happens.

By the way, post your PC configuration in here... all details, video card as well. Maybe we can find what's causing those problems. Also, it would be great if you can list all your security applications you run on your computer... like, avast!, what firewal are you using, antispyware programs like Spybot, Ad-Aware, Bazooka etc. Do not forget to add something, try to give us as detailed lists as you can... We can help you, but also, we need help from you. As much inforamtion we have that much it will be easier to solve your problem.

Cheers !

I had the same problem as Volans.  I use Win2000 and had deleted the Brainbot items after using Spybot S&D.  I found the FAQ entry saying to run C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX.  After I let that run, and the main application window was able to come right up.  I didn't even have to restart Avast.  Apparantly this didn't work for Volans, but it did for me.

This happened before (the last time I ran Spybot, I'm guessing), and my solution then was to uninstall and reinstall Avast.  I had no idea of the tie-in to Spybot until I read this thread.  I'll just set Spybot to ignore those specific registry references in the future.

Sound Blaster PCI 128
----
Windows 98 SE
Office 2000

I have just experienced the same problem as Volans with a fresh installation off Windows Millenium on a Pentium3 computer.

I have another computer with Millenium with Avast working fine.
The problem with the P3 computer resolved itself when i install Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and I upgrade Millenium with Windows Update.

Is possible some software is missing in the original CDRom of Millenium.

I show Volans has Windows 98. Try to install IE6 SP1 and upgrade Windows 98.

I am very satisfied with Avast.

Did get that skin load error earlier. This was after I ran Micro-trend anti spyware.

I was able to recover with the re-registering of the file. Seems that Micro-trend also thinks that Active Skin is poison. False positive? I don't know as Symantec also pings it at http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/spyware.realspy.html.

More accuratly, it seems that some spywares out there are using Activeskin and somehow those keys are the ones picked on by the product to identify.

Just in case, will turn the active skin off and quarrantine the regkeys and associated files until this can be proven safe (or not) one way or another.

Here is the anti-spyware log (and they are still detected as of the last update):

I haven't had this problem yet and I just updated and ran Spybot!!  But if Spybot S&D does turn up these files, do we not have Spybot fix them or do we uncheck the files that have Activeskin in them and leave the other entries checked for deletion ???

Did you inform the false positive to Micro Trend company?

Hello,   ;)

A suggestion made on a French forum (that does not solve the problem
but circumvents it):
- Right-click on the Avast icon (the blue ball @) in the systray.
- Go in "avast settings"
- Strip the box "Activate the themes for the simplified user
interface" (I don't know if the translation is good for this option in the English interface)

The error message " usiGetSkin failed" should disappear, but you couldn't apply other skins to your Avast interface (except a very basic skin)
