Title: Win XP service pack 2
Post by: frampo on September 27, 2004, 11:40:46 PM
I have just built a new computer.
AMD 64 3000 2Ghz
512MB Ram
Maxtor 160 Gb Hdd
Asus ATI Radeon 9200
on a Foxconn 755/760A01 M/B

I have avast pro running, but am encountering sproadic shutdowns.
The Dreadded BSD reads.
WIN32K.SYS
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
*** STOP 0X00000050

I have read that some antivirus programs could cause this.
Has any one come across this problem?

Help if you can

Dan ??? ??? ???  :'(

Welcome to this board.

That error can be caused by bad memory. (New doesn't mean it can't be broken) You can test the memory with MEMTEST86 (http://www.memtest86.com/)

Have you already read the MS article (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmd_stp_ccgm.asp) about it?

frampo, I could be completely wrong but I think I've read something that the actual version of avast is not compatible with AMD 64bits.
You should wait for the next version (4.5) that is promissed for next days...  :-\

Frampo, please send me the contents of the directory c:\windows\minidump (at least a couple of most recent files from that directory).

Ideally to my email address.

Thanks
Vlk

Am I right Vlk?

Well right... Current version of avast doesn't scan files properly under XP SP2 + AMD64 but should not be causing system crashes in any way.

To make current version of  avast work properly on XP SP2 + AMD64, the /NOEXECUTE switch from C:\Boot.ini needs to be removed (as already stated for a couple times here).

Thanks
Vlk

Thanks for the 'Bro' but I'm not from Alwil...
What can I say? I was promissed to the end of September.
It is in the last test phase... but we can have a Beta in next weeks...
Hold on  ;)

I have traced the problem to a bad stick of memory, thanks for the advice boys.
Hopefully will be receiving a new stick tomorrow.

Will keep an eye out for the new version.
