Title: Avast 6 can't access update server on Win XP SP3 laptop
Post by: pukunui on April 07, 2011, 10:24:46 AM
Hi folks,

I thought I'd start a separate thread for the problem I'm having with my other computer. It's a Dell laptop. Several years old. Running Windows XP 32-bit with SP3 and all that jazz. I believe it originally came with McAfee, but I got rid of it long ago and have been using Avast ever since. I think I had v4 or v5 on there before, and it worked fine. No problems. But ever since I upgraded to v6, it hasn't been able to access the virus definitions update server.

FYI: the Web Shield is not blocking my webpage access on my laptop. The only issue I'm having here is the "error connecting to server" thing.

Some help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jonathan

I would recommend to install from scratch (uninstall, reboot, reinstall).

OK so I uninstalled Avast via the Control Panel, then ran the Avast clean uninstall tool, then ran the McAfee clean uninstall tool (which I hadn't ever run on this machine before), then ran the Avast clean uninstall tool again just to be sure, and then downloaded and reinstalled Avast 6, and that appears to have worked! It has successfully contacted the update server and has downloaded the most recent virus definition files and such.

Fingers crossed it'll stay that way! I'll post back here again if any more problems crop up in the next few days.

I think I had v4 or v5 on there before <snip>
You did all the correct things, however if you find that you still have a problem, I noticed that you did not uninstall v.4.0 or v.5.0 during your Avast uninstalls (or at least did not post that you did).

If you find that you still have a problem, you can use the same Avast Uninstaller Tool http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear6.exe (http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear6.exe) to uninstall ALL versions and products on the machine, including the ones mentioned above.  This way you will not have remnants on the machine.

Let us know how things work out.
