Hello,
My avast stopped working today, randomly.. So i went to investigate it all i could. Then contacted iYogi and talked to and remote-accesed with a tech agent. For over 3 hours. He removed all other security programs (malwarebytes.. etc) as an attemt to try and fix this and deleted their reg values scanned for malware.. tried repairing avast and reinstalling several times! After a long time he said he did all he could wich was understandable, he said he would contact the avast team to help me in within 24-48 hours. But maybe i could get fast help in here i thought. This is very frustrating! If you could help please and thank you that would be great! :)
-----------------------
Edit:
Using Windows 7 32-bit, Avast IS, Mbam, Hitman Pro.
Avast started doing the above again. I have not uninstalled anything or installed anything today i have no idea what the problem is..
-
What was the error message? What is "stop working"?
Which was your previous antivirus and firewall? Before AIS?
-
What is your OS? What are the symptoms of "stopped working"? Exactly what other security software did he remove? Did he remove the other security software (and avast!) with their standard windows uninstallers or the custom vendor uninstallers as described at http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/ ? It would be helpful if you know the steps they have already taken, or if you don't know exactly people here may ask you to repeat some steps. How is your security software currently configured? Firewall? AV? Other?
-
Is says, Unsecured, in red, and also Urgent message: avast stopped working, please re-start it etc... And so it says 'Fix' or 'Start' tried both, if i click it it starts ok well that is for 15 seconds then it says Unsecured again. I just don't know what to do at this point.
The previous ant-virus was Bitdefender IS

Windows 7: Ultimate 32 bit.
Syptoms: Not sure i restarted my computer and it just stopped.
He removed: Spybot - Search and destroy, superantispyware - Free, Malwarebytes - Pro, And Hitman Pro.
Other security: Just a leftover folder of f-secure from a while ago, and eset online scanner nothing that would interfear anyway.
He removed the Spybot - Search and destroy, superantispyware - Free, Malwarebytes - Pro, And Hitman Pro. with windows uninstaller,
All of avast features are defaults because of reinstall.

Finished successfully, avast started for about 20 seconds then shutdown..

So i tried repairing and updating avast again. And this time it did not switch back off.. i did not change anything i am not sure what was causing it.
But.. my avast is working again for now.. :)

After you ran the BitDefender uninstaller tool, did you reboot?
You may also want to run the F-Secure Uninstaller listed under #14 here: http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/ (http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/), then reboot to make sure there are no remnants left behind.
I would not reinstall SB in the future:
- SB fails to detect: http://www.brighthub.com/computing/smb-security/articles/65492.aspx (http://www.brighthub.com/computing/smb-security/articles/65492.aspx).
You can after your problems are fixed reinstall MBAM Pro; SAS (on-demand) although MBAM does a better job; Hitman Pro is obsolete now and has been replaced with OTS. AIS with MBAM Pro will give you excellent protection. It is up to you if you would like other on-demand security software that does not conflict, but add them one at a time to see how they play with your software and being compatible.
It is possible that by doing the Avast Repair and rebooting, you got some things working, and you can monitor the situation. However it cannot hurt to run the other uninstaller listed above then reboot. You may need to do an Avast Repair afterwards and reboot again.
You will find that you will prompt support response here in the Avast forum. However if you have any problems that you wish to convey regarding your interaction with iYogi, you can contact Adam Riley of Avast by email: riley at avast dot com (no spaces).
Please let us know if you have any questions and we will continue to assist you here. Thank you. :)
-
I'ld recommend a Malwarebytes Antimalware Scan followed by an Avast Boot-Time Scan as well, just to make sure there is no malware stuff on your machine that triggered this sudden odd behaviour.
Also make sure, that Self-Protection of Avast is turned on.

Well i did yes but avast shut it's self down still but after a while i restarted again without doing anything that time. May of just needed a 2nd boot?
I'll do that F-secure uninstall also just in case.
And yea i was planning on uninstalling SB because it never detected half the things mbam and hitman did.
The strange thing is that i had avast installed for about atleast 2 weeks and had no problems in till yesterday.
And thanks for all the info & support :)
-
Do you have Teatimer (TT) installed as well?
I would run the uninstaller again to be sure.
Here is the information for SB with TT uninstall:
Uninstall Spybot S&D w/Teatimer: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/uninstall.html (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/uninstall.html).
- How to disable Spybot-S&D (temporarily). http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/disable.html (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/disable.html) . Even though it says temporarily, the resident parts of SpyBot Search & Destroy must be enabled manually if disabled in this manner. TeaTimer doesn't load into memory at all when disabled.
Reboot after uninstalling.

I have not installed any other security software.. or anything. All i did was restart my computer.. and avast turned off. Same as before if i turn it on it goes on for about 20 seconds. I should note that now 9/10 shields are down. Only thing still working is Firewall. No existing security products are on here.. i am lost. Please help me out? Thanks.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but windows update has caused problems in a few cases and I can't say for sure if it effects windows 7. It was the update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable. KB2467174. Maybe you could go to programs and features and uninstall this update then check to see if Avast acts as expected. You could always reinstall this update later. If it does fix it then Microsoft sent out a botched update. Only problem with this is that the updates weren't released until the 13th and you had the problem before this. I would also go to microsofts website and perform a clean install of the existing Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable (for x86) which will also be in programs and features. Just to make sure these are not corrupt in any way.
Clean install of this:
x86

I looked in the installed updates but do not see KB2467174 i have Microsoft Visual 2010 tho

Here are some images so you can see what i am working with..
-
The thing is, I have Windows 7 and don't have MV C++ 2010 and have Avast 6 installed and mine is working fine with 2008. I think 2008 is all that is required. How long did you have Avast installed before having problems?
can you go into programs and features and screenprint everything that has to do with Microsoft Visual C++? Just want to see what is there. I may be barking up the wrong tree on this. Not for sure.

Here you go:
and it's worth a try :)
-
Oh, you have 32 bit only. Disregard anything I posted about 64 bit then. I edited my previous post. That update I was referring to is there.
-
Ok, well thanks for trying to help.
-
That windows update that I was talking about is there.
I would uninstall that update and give Avast a try.
If that doesn't work then I would create a restore point or better yet an image backup then remove all the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributables and install http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=A5C84275-3B97-4AB7-A40D-3802B2AF5FC2
I would like to see if some sort of corruption with the others is the cause.
-
Ah i see it now haha i'll try uninstalling it.
-
It looks like it is working! :o
I am going to leave that thing uninstalled..
But i hope avast stays working now.. Thanks.
-
I don't know if I would call it fixed quite yet. Give it some time and please report back if it fails again.
-

Will do ;)
I also emailed avast for extra help.
-
I sent Vlk an email on this. I don't really know for sure if it is a fix or not. Or whether or not it's a botched Microsoft update or if the others are corrupted. Or maybe this has nothing to do with it at all. ??? It's been intermittant so that makes it tough to figure out. Have a good evening.
-
I wish i knew :-\ but it worked for the time being it seems. Good evening to you too.

@ EdisnaecoIMVU,
Let's review what has been done so far. When you started this thread and had previous discussions with iYogi, I had given you instructions for uninstalling security software in case remnants were left behind.
Questions:
1. Did you run ALL the uninstallers of your previous security software?
2. Did you elect NOT to reinstall Spybot SD?
3. Did you do an uninstall / clean install of Avast with the latest version using the Avast Uninstaller tool?
Were questions 1 - 3 done prior to the MS Updates? If so, were things working properly prior to this time? If not, please produce a mini-dump file.
- Here is additional information on how to invoke a memory dump file: http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=71 (http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=71).
- Please, zip and upload the C:\Windows\Memory.dmp file to this anonymous ftp server and name it uniquely: ftp.avast.com/incoming (http://ftp.avast.com/incoming). Avast will analyze it and respond back to you in this thread or to your email.
@ Charyb,
Thank you for emailing Vlk, but I don't know if he can help at this point since he just got back from traveling. Adam, from Avast has been involved in this case/thread (see earlier in post). Thank you.

1. Yes
2. I did not install Spybot.
3. Yes
I will do the memory dump now. And to note avast is down again.

I restarted my computer and pushed ctrl + scr lk two times when the problem accured nothing happened. So i restarted manually and nothing happened. ???
-
@EdisnaecoIMVU
Sorry to see that it is not working again. It was a coin toss.
@Safesurf
I saw that regarding Adam. The email didn't contain anything about this topic. It was only about windows update in general.
-
So.. i did a sfc /scannow and it helped (for now) avast is on. But it said some things could not be repaired so avast might shut back down soon.
-
And there it goes shutting down again!
::)
-
I tried everything.. nothing is working i don't understand why it is acting like it is. I may have to move to a different software.. i have no shields protecting my system and i must before it is too late.
-
To clarify, you were or were not able to submit a mini-dump file to Avast? If you were not able because of server problems, please try to submit again. Thank you.
Check the information on the first post of this thread under Virus/Worms for you to check your machine for malware: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0).
Follow the directions of obtaining an MBAM log (make sure you update MBAM first) and the OTS logs (save them as ANSI and not Unicode). Post the MBAM log and the OTS log as an attachment (Additional Options > Attach > Post). I want to make sure we are not dealing with malware as the source of your problems. Thank you.
-
I am using avira in till avast gets fixed. That way i have real-time protection.
I have done the scans and posted them below.

This is one of the error reports from your system it looks to belong to the spam module
I can see no apparent malware on the logs - did you reinstall the system last month ?
-
I reinstalled my windows 7 1-2 months ago yes, if that is what you mean?
-
Ah OK it was just that you had a great deals of files dated last month
From the log I can see no reason why Avast is behaving this way
I would suggest that you see what the dump files reveal
-
I tried the dump file procedure, but it did not work for me. Enless i am doing it wrong. Avira is working perfectly fine on my system only avast is not working on this system for some reason.
-

No.. i uninstalled avast for the time being sense it is not working.. i installed avira for temporary use. I only have 1 anti-virus installed. And i know i 'cannot do that'.
And it was not directed to you. It was to anyone that is willing to help :)

@ EdisnaecoIMVU,
You may want to uninstall ASC by IObit then reboot to see if this helps you produce a dump file. Others have had problems with ASC and uninstalling this software did help resolve the problem. I wasn't aware you had this software until I saw your OTS log.
@ Dieselman,
Please read my previous post to see that I asked the OP to produce the MBAM and OTS logs so I could rule out malware and see what exactly was on his system. The OP also mentions that he installed a different AV temporarily while Avast was not working for him so that he has protection until we resolve this problem.
@ Essexboy,
Do you see a reason why the OP is unable to produce a mini-dump file? You may have to go back a few pages in this thread to see what happened in his attempts to produce one. Thank you.

-
I got the Dump file now, but, http://ftp.avast.com/incoming site shows 'problem loading page' in Firefox.
-
As you have windows 7 - open windows explorer - type into the address bar incoming on ftp.avast.com then press the blue arrow on the bar
A folder will be created on your computer - see pic.
Drag and drop the dump file there
-
I tried as you said, and it just says not found.
-
Weird - as that is how I upload files to Avast
Could you upload the dump using IE
-
It said something like.. to open ftp open windows explorer press alt and view. I have no idea how to do that.
-
All you should need to do is copy and paste the ftp link into the windows explorer Address window and click enter. Note that is windows explorer 'not' internet explorer.
If you are trying to use the link you pasted in Reply #52 is it is a mishmash of an http and ftp address, copy and paste this ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming into windows explorer and click enter.
It will give an FTP Folder error, don't worry, just click the OK button, you will now have a blank right half to the window (that is the avast ftp incoming folder.
Now open another windows explorer window, navigate to where the dump file is and drag it into the blank right half of the other explorer window.
-
It is not working for me either way ???
Screenshot below:
-
Don't paste it in the search box... in the adress box.

When i do that it sends me to search website online..

Is it normal for it to take 6 hours to transfer the Memory.Dmp to incoming server?
Depends on file size and traffic.
Better if you can zip the file!

I did the zip thing (image in last post) and it is only going to take about a hour now to send it :) thanks.

So after it is uploaded to the incoming server is that all i need to do? Avast has the dump file?

Yep they now have it.

I don't see avast! antivirus service is running ("avastsvc.exe" process).
Run Command prompt as Administrator (howto: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/run-a-command-as-administrator-from-the-windows-vista-run-box/)
and type: sc start "avast! antivirus"
which error msg did you get?

Hi,
i got this error:
[SC] StartService FAILED 1075:
The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.
I have reinstalled avast so all the components should be there. And i used the uninstall tool also.
-
ok, please run Command Prompt as Administrator again and type:
fltmc
is there "aswMonFlt" listed?
if not, type: fltmc start aswmonflt
did you get any error message?
-
First question:
No "aswMonFlt" is not listed but "aswFsBlk" is.
2nd:
When typing "fltmc start aswmonflt" i get this:
"** Invalid command
Valid commands:

unload Unloads a Filter driver
filters Lists the Filters currently registered in the system
instances Lists the Instances for a Filter or Volume currently

attach Creates a Filter Instance to a Volume
detach Removes a Filter Instance from a Volume
Use fltmc help [ command ] for help on a specific command"
-
sorry, right command is: fltmc load aswmonflt
-
Oh ok,
I got this error with the new command:
"Load failed with error: 0x800704db
The specified service does not exist."
-
please send me your "c:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\Setup\setup.log" (compress if it's needed: zip/rar/7z), to kurtin@avast.com
run regedit.exe, do you have HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\aswMonFlt key there?
Thanks.
-
Sent,
And yes i have that key.
(i will be back later to check on this topic)
