Post by: arnous on September 30, 2004, 10:31:24 PM
hi all, i have some questions  ???
1)what's the difference between Win32:Trojan-gen.{Other} and Win32:Trojan-gen.{VC}?
2)it's the third time in this week that i find an infected file with one of this two kinds of trojan. all in the \System Volume Information\_restore{...}\RPXXX\ directory. is it normal?

thanx for your replies

Disable system restore, reboot and it will be gone.

arnous:
Follow Eddy's advice. If you intend to use System restore, besure to turn it back on after you reboot.

what will be the consequence of disabling system restore? and what's  the utility of having it if it brings you trojans?

System restore doesn't bring trojans. They are false positives. The way windows compress/codes the things in the system restore folder, give some files there the same signature as some malware.

System restore (only implemented in ME and XP) is Microsofts effort to make it easier for users to recover their system after a crash. Unfortunatly, it is not working as they want it to.

Instead of using system restore a image of the working system and regular backups is a much better way to restore a system when something is really going wrong.

System restore normally also uses a lot of diskspace. (You can change that in the settings)

ok, your first Q.

gen is short for generic/generall. It is just a name for things that have the same "characteristics"

What stand between {} is the language which is used to code the malware in, if I am correct.

VB=Visual Basic
VC=Visual C(++)?
Other=well, guess what..... ;) Other programming language.

I may be wrong with this (don't think so) but if I am, I'm sure someone will correct me ;D

You're not the only one ;D So am I ;D

for my profession (owner of a comp repair store) I signed up with a lot of forums, newsletters and things like that. And I am not saying this because I am a Avast user, but this is the best forum/support when it comes to av software in my opinion. I'm glad you like it.

Even when you don't have problems, stick around. Lots of interesting things here. Not only concerning Avast but other things as well (off-topic forum). I would say spend some time (if you can) to browse/search a little, and you may find some other usefull/interesting things here.

WELCOME to the club!
