Title: [SOLVED] Avast Fonts
Post by: Cristiano90 on April 14, 2011, 09:50:28 AM
Hello everybody,
I'm new on this forum, but I'm an old user of Avast!; Great Program! :D

But, I must say that when I installed Avast! free, vers. 6.0.1000, all my fonts were normal. After my Windows has been updated from microsoft servers, (I have Windows XP Sp3), all my fonts in Avast were modified to a much smaller size.
I made a print screen to see how fonts are looking now.
I searched this problem on avast forum and go ogle, but all the methods to solve this problem, are inefficient.
I tried to select/unselect Cleartype, but there is no difference. I also modify screen resolution, but nothing happens.

If i need to give more details, i will do it. Thanks for next answers and I hope to solve this problem.

I agree the fonts in the GUI are slightly smaller, but I think it is because there is more information contained within the GUI now than in the older version.

Just to clarify, outside of the Avast GUI, the rest of your machine fonts (browser, Word, etc.) fonts are working fine?

I'm not sure about this one, but try it:
Start IinternetExplorer and check the settings for font size (under menu "view" I believe). Reset that to standard (or the middle setting I think, not sure).
This might help.

He did not change Avast versions, SafeSurf.  ;D Happened after Win Update.

Welcome to the forum Cristiano90  :)

Are you referring to the Windows Updates (Microsoft Updates)?

That seems to be quite obvious, doesn't it?

@SafeSurf: All my fonts are fine. :P
@Zyndstoff: In IE, zoom for fonts are 100%
@yodaosan: Honestly, I can't see after what update, Avast has smaller fonts. Because all update process was when my Windows shuts down.

P.S. I'm using Mozilla Firefox 3.6.16 if this information help. My IE version is 7.0.5730

You should update FF to 4.0, and IE to v.8.  That might help, and at least reduce your security risk.

+1 that should be done in any case.

Firefox is however not related to this problem. IE might...

@Zyndstoff: yes, that setting is checked like in your print screen. I cannot use firefox 4.0, cause it moves slowly on my computer. I also use Google Chrome - the last version

You can then change your fonts to Larger in the setting you posted your print screen to see if this helps.

I would still update your IE to v.8 for security protection.

Well, okay, then let's try a repair installation of Avast.

Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, doubleclick Avast entry, on the left side of installer window scroll down to the "Repair" option and select it.
After repair installation do a reboot.

Did it help?

@SafeSurf: But, if I'm not surfing on internet with IE, why should I update it?
@Zyndstoff: I try to repair, to unninstall it, I use aswclear6, but none of them solve it. Now it is the 3rd reinstall of program.
Plus, before IE6 updates to ie7, my fonts in avast, were small too.

@SafeSurf: But, if I'm not surfing on internet with IE, why should I update it?

Because it deeply integrates in the system plus it is used for Windows Updates.

Did you check this (see screenshot)?

Other applications use IE when accessing the Internet.  You are on the Internet now.  As a general rule, it is safer to keep all your software up to date to reduce your security risks.

I will let Zyndstoff continue your support in helping to fix your problem.  Thank you. :)

I'm running out of ideas.  ;D

One last approach though: try to set the Windows theme (Display Properties -> Design -> there's a drop down in the lower left) to Windows-Classic and then back to Windows XP.
Maybe that shakes something back into place.

Are you using any tweaking-tool (like TuneUp or TweakUI or similar)?

@Zyndstoff: I switch to Windows Classic Theme, and there is same text size.
@Vlk: I have Microsoft Office 2003 (word, ppt & excel), with compatibility pack for 2007.

In this morning I reinstall my Windows (lol, same WinXP, sp3). I update it with Automatic Updates and all fonts in avast were normal. I install Microsoft Office 2003, and, after my PC restarts, the fonts in Avast modify to a smaller size.

Is something serious going on in avast office,,,
waiting for vlk's comment eagerly...

Also you said you don't use FF as it slows ur pc but u r posting replies from firefox itself as shown in above screenshots...(just pulling ur leg) ;D

I think i should create a thread naming vlk appeared :D :D :D :D :D :D

Well, yeah, that's what I think is unavoidable.
Maybe uninstall Office and reinstall w/o the fonts - if that is possible, don't know.
Or, easiest solution: live with it.  8)

or install Office 2007 or 2010 or 2011( Don't know 2011 is for Windows or not but 2007 and 2010 is)

@Ashish Singh: I said that I use Firefox 3.6.16, but not the last vers, cause ff4.0 it's slows down my computer.  :P ;D
@Zyndstoff: Maybe... I'm realy curios what Vlk's answer will be.  :)

To be honest: I don't think there will be any.  ;D

There has been another thread about this in the past, and Vlk ended that with "Avast will use the font that is shipped with Office".

That's why I said to try to uninstall the extra fonts that came with office via office setup - don't know if that is possible - and then add them maybe manually in the fonts folder.

OR:

If you have a second PC available without office, copy all ttf files from the fonts folder to a stick.
Backup (just in case...) and uninstall all fonts from your PC and install all fonts from the stick... may be worth a try.

 :D :D :D :D :D

I solve the problem. How?!? Zyndstoff gave my an ideea, to erase fonts from %windows% folder.
Here it is the solution:
I erase Calibri Font, and then I restart my computer. After my Pc was restarted, I opened my Avast and all the fonts came back to normaly. Office is working fine too.  ;D

Thanks to everyone who helped me. All of you deserve a great and big beer.
I hope my solution will help other users.
Have a nice day (or night).  ;)

Great Antivirus, great Community.

Later Edit: I must say that Calibri font cannot be deleted when OS is running normaly. I made a backup (will all calibri fonts) and then i delete it in safe mode. If i think better, i will rename the old name.

Lol, :o there is a very nice trick. I restore Calibri font, but I also installed SegoeUI Font, and now Avast font is realy how it should be. Soo there is nothing to erase, only to install SegoeUI font (which avast use it as default).  :)

SegoeUI ... where do you get it from to install? And why wasn't it there in the first place? You did not uninstall it?

SegoeUI ... where do you get it from to install? And why wasn't it there in the first place? You did not uninstall it?
The font I took it from Vista Transformation Pack for XP (i use Universal Extractor, to extract all files inside), and then i know that Calibri and SegoeUI was fonts created once with Windows Vista. When you install a clear Windows XP, it doesn't came with calibri and segoe fonts. But if you update it, with IE7/8, or you install MS office 2003(only with compatibility pack for 2007), 2007 or 2010, those programs install only calibri font.
I'm pretty sure that i didn't uninstall it, cause there is no such an option. I will put a image to see the difference.
