Title: IncrediMail and AVAST
Post by: Shae on October 04, 2004, 03:57:54 AM
I really enjoy using IncrediMail.  I have not used it since I installed AVAST.  I reverted back to Outlook Express.

Does AVAST work with the IncrediMail program?

Do you have any negative thoughts re the use of IncrediMail?  I used it for many years without any problems...but one of the forums I post on does not have good things to say about it.  They see it as spyware because it downloads a lot of "stuff" into the computer on installation ... that apparently is not removed when you delete the program.

Hi Nana2 - You should be able to set up the use of Incredimail with the use of the avast! Mail Protection Wizard. Go to ... Start, Programs, avast! Antivirus, Mail Protection Wizard.

As far as what Incredimail installs, I have never used it and am not sure what. Perhaps someone will be along soon who can give that answer.

Several customers of mine are using Incredimail and Avast, and none of them have a problem with it. They work together like a charm.

Nowadays, the following Internet Mail Clients are supported: MS Outlook (including Outlook 2003), MS Exchange, MS Outlook Express, Eudora, Pegasus Mail, Netscape Mail, Mozilla Mail, IncrediMail and The Bat!

If this not help, you, try the help file Manual setting of mail protection.
Launch your mail program and let the program display the account settings.

Can you close Incredimail and run the Mail Protection Wizard (Start Menu > All programs > avast antivirus > Mail Protection Wizard), choose the second option (non Outlook/Exchange provider) and then automatic protect all your accounts even the ones created in the future?

If that does not work, you can change manually the SMTP authentication options for something like this:
user_name#smtp_server_address
Fill your password and ask for saving it.

Hope this helps  ;)

Oh man, this is NOT my day!

I downloaded the latest version of IncrediMail.

I moved my address book over from O.E.

It was all down hill from there.

I spent forever on the phone with my service provider, trying to get IncrediMail set up so that it would work.   They do not deal with IncrediMail, only O.E.  They are not much help.  I could receive mail, but as soon as I tried to start writing a new email, I got an error message.

I fiddled with this for waaaaay too long.

IncrediMail help files were no help.

I started reading the "problems with IncrediMail" sites on the net .... whew, a lot of very unhappy people.

Finally gave up in total frustration and uninstalled IncrediMail and then used system restore to bring my computer back to yesterday.

I used this program for many years with no problems ever.  I'd flip back and forth from O.E.

I think the problem is within IncrediMail because it wont let me start to write a new email.

I don't think it has anyting to do with my AVAST settings, or my Zone Alarm, or the new, big Windows update.

Nana,

Firstly, Incredimail IS spyware.  It is cutsy but I do not recommend it for that reason.

Secondly,  Avast could cause problems with sending email, but not writing it.  This usually occurs from improperly configuration of the SMTP settings.

Thirdly, When did you install Windows SP2?  In the last week, I have had to help restore 2 users computers which crashed without warning after installation.
Did you trouble start after SP2 install?

We are here to help you, so let us know how you are doing.  I use OE and Pegasus mail as a backup.  Thunderbird is also a nice backup, or mainstay email client.  Both work nicely with Avast.

Good luck

:'( ... ah, I'm disappointed.  I LOVE that program.  I really enjoy writing letters, and I love doing it on pretty paper.  It's one of those "girl things."  IncrediMail delights me.  Or, at least, it did.

I have my computer set to automatically download all the Windows Updates.  I got the new big one as soon as it hit cyberspace.  I have not noticed any problems.

I realize that even deleting IncrediMail from my system, it is there forever.  It is a very invasive program methinks.  I chose to ignore that.  I don't even notice any advertising on it.  It's probably there ... I just don't pay any attention to it.

Anyhow, now that it has become "difficult" to operate ... it has gone beyond my limited technical ability and I can't cope with it.

It is too bad it has this bad rep.  When you read all the neat stuff it does ... you realize how boring and behind O.E. is (from my perspective).

I will go back to using O.E. and Cloudeight stationery.  No spyware there.

Have a great day!

Nan

You might find this interesting it's from an earlier discussion about e-mail and privacy and Incredimail in perticular.
Yes, I use the latest version of Incredimail which automatically junks unauthorised e mail.

Just a heads up, I'll quote from Incredimails privacy and usage policy

(b) Unless stated specifically otherwise therein, grant IncrediMail an unrestricted, perpetual, irrevocable license to use, reproduce, display, perform, modify, transmit and distribute the material, and you further agree that IncrediMail is free to use any ideas, know-how, concepts or techniques you send us for any purpose, without any compensation to you or any other person.

The link is here

http://www.incredimail.com/english/termsofuse.html

You might also like to review their privacy policy too.

If you find the programme usefull, that's great.  Personally I woudn't go there, it's a bit like letting the postman read my mail and use the information for profit.

Stay away from incredimail!

Used this program a few years ago and was getting lots of junk emails on all the accounts I had setup with incredimail.

After a few weeks of not using it the number of junk emails I was getting reduced tremendously.

Also I found it to have added  hundreds of enteries in my windows registry.

It is spyware and i recommend you bin it.

There is a difference between add supported free-ware and spyware.
If you pay for it, even the adds are gone. I just don't like their privacy policy and terms.
