Title: windows 7 64 bit : high usage of system handles
Post by: samnetx on April 24, 2011, 09:39:18 AM
The number of handles in windows7 64 bit keeps on increasing. At the start of windows 7 there are 30000 handles and after few hours it goes up to over 100000 handles. I recently turned my windows 7 all services from manual to automatic.

view attached images of high system handles used by windows 7 64 bit.

=================================
I turned my windows 7 64 bit services to default as shown in Black Viper's website.
The Comodo System Cleaner service was found to be increasing windows 7 system handles.
Installed from setup filename : CSC_3.0.172695.53_xp_vista_server2003_server2008_win7
I have uninstalled Comodo System Cleaner. My system is now became normal
After up time of 13 hours my windows 7 system handles are at 24000. View the attached image.

Its not a good idea to change Windows 7 services from manual to automatic.

It is best to leave them alone.

Aside form there being little point in changing those from Manual to Automatic, if they are required and are set to Manual then they will start. So you are starting them automatically and that will use more memory.

Well basically I believe these handles are how the system knows where things are in memory and the more memory you use the larger this would become (partly due to your change if the service would otherwise be stopped/manual).

With only 2GB on a win7 x64 system you would really benefit with more RAM as you are already running at 75% of that leaving little reserve. Another 2GB would make a lot of a difference in overall system performance and 64bit OSes can manage even more than 4GB if necessary. Unless you have some applications that would benefit from greater amounts of RAM (video editing, etc.) then more than 4GB would make little difference over that quantity.

The increase in handles can also indicate an application with a memory leak problem.
