Title: Avast 200MB and counting!(SOLVED)
Post by: bertscroggins on April 25, 2011, 01:47:26 AM
Hi All,

Another silly one (I did search but found nothing matching my query, which is surprising!).

I am trying to quicken a particular laptop and note that Avast is 200MB in size and increasing with every update.
Is this usual?
Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

Bert.

The short answer is yes it is usual - Stop counting.

Longer answer:
The avast updates 'defs' are contained in their own unique folders so there will be duplication, see image. When an incremental update is done a new folder is created for the collation of the existing definitions and the new incremental ones. Each one will be over 50MB in its uncompressed state, which helps with scanning speed.

So you will at that point have at least the new one and the previous one and possibly one from the day before. Periodically avast does its own housekeeping and drops of the oldest one of the back end. So most of the time you will only have two or at most three defs version folders.

Ah, okay.
No major problem then.

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to advise, David.
