Title: Update for avast_at_logon_by_Tech.exe
Post by: Dcn.Dad on April 27, 2011, 01:02:49 AM
Is there one site I can always go to to get the latest updates for "avast_at_logon_by_Tech.exe"?  This can be a very useful program, but short retention times (at least with the version I have), we need to maintain a fresh version at all times.  When I need it, I cannot log on to get it then.

Thanks, Mike

Well well... I can release it but I've thought nobody was using that tool anymore.
I have already prepared an update for version 5... Need some adjusts for version 6.
Is anybody else interested?

avast released a boot time scanner for both x32 and x64 systems.
It runs very early in boot process of course.

But, sometimes, users just want to see the interface, have the comfort of setting the scan settings with the GUI, etc.
avast at logon was a tool that holds the logon process (does not allow other applications to run in background) and load avast at the first time while logging in. In theory, other background applications are hold as well and won't interfere in the scanning (speed).

It has been my understanding that the pre-boot scan has to be scheduled using the Avast GUI.  With an infected machine it is often impossible to invoke the GUI because of the virus.  In fact, some viruses purposely inactivate the AV program to more easily do their dirty work.  Thus the necessity of having an .EXE to get an Avast GUI after booting to safe mode.  Then schedule the scan, reboot and let Avast do its thing.  If I am missing something or there is another way of scheduling a pre-boot scan on an infected machine, please enlighten me.  I'll be the first to admit that after 40 years working with data processing, I still have a lot to learn.

Thanks so much TECH for your contributions, I'm sure a lot of users learn from them.

You can schedule in Safe Mode (pressing F8 while booting).
You can run from an elevated command line: <Avast folder path>\sched.exe /A:"*" /archives
Sometimes, infected computer can't make logon, so my tool won't be able to activate avast.

I am interested. Count me in for version 6.

Is that a space between sched.exe and /A ? Also beteewn "*" and /archives ?

Thank you.

Your suggestion works perfectly!  :D
To simplify things a bit and because (hopefully) this will not be needed often, I have written and attached a BAT file, AvastBootScan.bat, to make the job a easier with less typing.  The attached file is a TXT file, but once downloaded just change the TXT to BAT.  The .BAT file can reside anywhere, but the Root Dir, in my case C:\, is suggested.  This simplifies remembering where you put it.  Instructions:
Boot to Safe Mode pressing the F8 key and select "boot with a command prompt" (or similar words)
Type at the prompt "cd ..\.." (no quotes).  This gets you to the root drive directory no matter where you ended up.
TYPE "dir" to be sure the BAT file is listed.
Type the name of the file at the command prompt, e.g. AvastBootScan and enter
The program should have run indicated by the word "Scheduled" on its own line.
An information note indicates that once you press any key your system will restart automatically.
The scan should start on its own.

I would be interested in any feedback, thanks

You're welcome.
Anyway, we're talking about boot time scanning and not my logon time tool :)

You're right, but depending upon the responses to your request for a program update (I know programming can take time), this BAT file should work independent of the GUI (admitted with fewer choices) - gives us an alternative.

For all users of the tool.
It's a SuperAntispyware false positive ;D
