Title: VPSupd4 Support for avast! Home Edition Free for Win98SE Ending Soon?
Post by: mchain on May 21, 2011, 10:01:25 AM
Is there a way to continue Win98SE vpsupd4 support for avast! 4.8 Home Edition Free past my license expiry date?  Win98SE is run off-line as a part of a dual-boot system (It runs MS Office Professional 2000, no longer supported by MS) and I open and run Office documents gotten online with it, so I need a current vps to protect it from infection.

I understand from elsewhere in this forum that this support may end soon, possibly before expiry sometime in June 2011.  I know it is an obsolete OS, but it is very fast on a P4 1.5 GHz processor, faster than my current MS OS, and as stable as well.

Kudos to avast! support for the excellent protection provided so far.

If vpsupd4 support is ending, what is the final end date?

We don't have the final end date but know it is coming soon, however you are correct in the information you posted.

ClamWin seems to be the only other alternative for Win98.
I think support will end when all the business environments running 4.8 upgrade to version 6, i.e., after business v6 makes v4.8 obsolete. This year? Early next year?

And I believe this will be an on-demand AV as well...but not positive.

@SafeSurf and Tech,

Thank you both for your concise answers and being to the point.

ClamWin has only on line updatability?  If so, not doable, as I do not care to run a firewall on this OS.  It is still nice to be able to run old programs that work perfectly well w/o worrying about the need to keep up with security vulnerabilities and updates, though.  M$ Office 2000 is the key one, as it still has features OpenOffice has yet to match.

OO can do anything MSO 2k can do...!!
Test it.

Why can't you scan the downloaded files in the online OS before opening them in a Win98 boot? Which other OS do you have in the dual boot?

If that's not possible, you can run ClamWin Portable (http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/clamwin_portable) (it states for Win2K and newer, but works fine on Win98) and it's real time counterpart Clam Sentinel (http://clamsentinel.sourceforge.net) (if you want real time protection with heuristics) from a USB drive. Update ClamWin while in the online OS boot.

No, you can install ClamWin in Win98, then do manual updates following the guide HERE (http://www.clamwin.com/content/view/58/27).
