Title: [Resolved] Avast site links problem
Post by: havildar on May 27, 2011, 01:56:36 PM
I`m not sure if this is in the right place, but any help would be appreciated.

The problem is with the way Avast linked pages are coming up on my screen. By that I mean avast!Free/Pro/Suite is ok and dead centre, but when I click a post (or question) the page comes up shifted to the right, and the left column (posters, avatars etc) isn`t there.

It seems to be happening with other general title/ specific questions here as well ... first page ok, click, right shift.

On Firefox with Adblock Plus which I`ve "Disable on this page only" but no difference. Same problem on IE 8.

Could it be problem with Spybot S&D or SpywareBlaster ... or something entirely different that I haven't thought of yet?

Thanks Asyn,

I've had a read of that but I don't think it covers my problem.

I like the new theme, width etc ... in short, the new default theme which is coming up with the first selection. It`s the second click and the page shift to the right that's the problem.

Something blocking items on the linked web page, I think, but I`m not sure what.

Did you try the AV6 evang theme..?
Also you can drop back to the old forum default theme, which is AV5.

Not yet, but I will do so.

On Avast 6 now, by the way. Updated from 5 this morning hoping it would fix my problem but no, it`s just the same.

1. Try it, should fix your problem.
2. Good, that you updated, but this is not related to the forum. Or did I misunderstand you all along..?

Now on Avast 6 evang which has changed the pages to full screen width, but still the second (linked) page is shifted to the right and where there should be a related list of posters/questions there is a blank column. Adblock Plus says "blocked items on this page 0 out of 143".

The reason I think something else iresponsible is that I have a similar problem with the PC Advisor webpage, where various ads are blocked all right, but the side-effect is to shift all pages to the left.

I`ll have to try switching off SpywareBlaster and then Spybot S&D to see if that makes any difference.

1. Please post a screenshot. ABP should not be a problem.
2. While I don't think this is related to these programs, I would drop them both, anyway.

PC Advisor left-shifted (due to 10 items blocked by Adblock Plus)

PC Advisor left-shifted (due to 10 items blocked by Adblock Plus)

Have you set ABP to free the space of blocked items..??
If this doesn't help ask here: http://adblockplus.org/forum/

Thanks Asyn,

That seems to have done the trick (Avast 5 theme):

I don`t think it has anything to do with Adblock Plus; first because it says it's blocking zero items on this page and secondly, because the right-shift is present in IE 8 (which I don`t use much), and to which Adblock doesn't apply.

It is the cause of the problem in the PC Advisor page. I can centre it by disabling Adblock for that page only.

Is it possible Avast is using something in the construction of the Avast 6 theme that SpywareBlaster has listed (wrongly) as a possible threat?

Are you having this problem only with the Avast forum or browsing in general (all browsers or which ones)?

No other browsing problems, SafeSurf, except for the new Avast (with Avast 6 theme) forum pages. The general titles list is ok, strangely enough. It`s only when I click a link that I get this right-shift.

I use only Firefox 3 (not updated to 4 yet), and IE 8 but not very often and I don`t think IE 9 is compatible with XP.

You are correct in that XP is not compatible with IE 9 and never will be to my knowledge.

I would recommend upgrading FF to the latest version to see if this fixes your problem, not to mention the upgrade provides add some security features.

I also use ABP in FF, and don't have an issue with XP-H SP3 or with XP-Pro SP3, so I don't think it is an ABP problem.

If after upgrading FF, you still have a problem, you may want to try a different theme with the Avast forum and find one that you like.  However when you sign out, it will go back to the default, which will give you the problem again.  I, too, also have to scroll sideways to see everything since I don't have a mega-screen.  :P  But I'm fine when I'm signed into the forum.

I think that's maybe part of my problem, SafeSurf, the large screen, I mean. I can see everything wrong with a web page without the need to do any scrolling at all. :o

Anyhow, the Avast 5 theme seems to have fixed it for now, except when I'm lurking, of course, not signed in but just to see what's been going on with Avast.

Something else I`ve noticed though, is that when I have an update for Avast 6, Comodo lists it in "x files(s) waiting for your review" as updates for Avast 5 ... not sure what that's all about.  ???

You can try to re size your screen and see if this helps if you have a large screen.

This is by default, at least for now.  It may change in the future, but I do not know.

This is something you see in Comodo?

Yes, in Comodo UI main page, near the bottom.

Since I do not use Comodo, I'm sure others here will have comments to say about that perhaps later.  I will check back with you later to see, however in the meantime, you may want to check the Comodo forum as well.

This kind of notification is quite normal in Comodo, SafeSurf. It`s a kind of secondary check, I suppose, to see that incoming files are not something nasty.

It`s just odd that they are listed as Avast 5, not Avast 6.

If you upgraded from Avast 5 to 6, the files are located in Avast 5.  If you did a clean install of Avast 6, they are located in a different location on your machine.

I need to be logged in, though. Here's the same page not logged in:

That's normal, as long as you aren't logged in you automtically see the current default theme. ;)

1. You are correct in that XP is not compatible with IE 9 and never will be to my knowledge.

2. I would recommend upgrading FF to the latest version to see if this fixes your problem, not to mention the upgrade provides add some security features.

1. Right.
2. The users problem is not related to ff version, see my sig. ;)

Something else I`ve noticed though, is that when I have an update for Avast 6, Comodo lists it in "x files(s) waiting for your review" as updates for Avast 5 ... not sure what that's all about.  ???

Just allow it. ;)
If you are asked, set it to update/system.
