Title: Red Alert Box Update
Post by: danjo-xx on June 04, 2011, 10:12:18 PM
Hi folks, newbie here. Been getting a couple of these recently but last night got one can't remember how it was described but their was a new web browser tool which could be selected but I didn't bother with that. I didn't reboot last night but this morning my system winxp wouldn't boot up.

Working in safe mode avast was showing up as (http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii72/puddsxx/Avastunsecure.jpg)

When I clicked on fix nothing happened.

After running a few scans I found one infected file, PUP.StartUpM..which I removed.
but system wouldn't boot up in normal mode.

Left it for a while and when I came back it booted up normally...*phew*

Now was this an Avast problem or not and what should I do.  Avast is still unsecured....
should I do an uninstall and reinstall and will I have to register if I do.

I see someone had a similar problem back in April.

have you tried avast repair?

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

thanks for your reply Pondus, I did a repair like you said and avast seems fine now. I removed the PUP.Startup Manager file and laptop boots up normally now. Steady as she goes now ;D
