I just received mine in the mail today.
Appears to be a "bit buggy" to say the least.
Folder scan does not work? When I select it I receive some C++ runtime error.
Can and how do you scan individual drives. I cannot enter anything into the local drive window.
The Command Prompt option only show Windows file names and not DOS ones. If I try to enter the full windows directory name, I get an error about paramter name to long.
Having to select a directory to download virus definitions is a bit bogus is it not? I have used AV recovery CDs in the past and none required me to select a download directory.
Based on my experience with other vendors recovery CDs and I have used many, this CD is not worth the $12 I paid for it.

Well, that's part of the folder scan option. The checkbox for local drives only scans all local drives.

What do you mean by "DOS ones"? Short filenames?

The error I get when I try to select the folder scan option is:
Runtime Error J:\bart\AvastPE.exe
Visual C++ runtime error. Runtime terminated in an unusual way.
dir /x doesn't work? Yes it does. Forgot about that /x DOS option.
What command exactly did you enter, and what's the exact error message?
For example, if I enter a cd [XP directory name] and the name is 8 characters or less, it works.
If I enter over 8 characters for example cd Documents and Settings, I get the error message "Too much parameters." DOS directory names work fine but of course those are 8 characters or less. Do Windows OS names have to be enclosed in quotes or something? I have forgot most of the DOS commands.

If the folder name contains spaces, you have to enclose it in quotes.
I.e. cd "Documents and settings"

Please let me know when this folder scan is fixed. The primary reason I bought this CD was for the capability to scan individual drives; especially one's pulled from another PC and connected to my PC via IDE/SATA to USB2 sdapter.
I have three hard drives internally and run in a dual boot XP SP3 x86 and WIN7 SP1 x64 environemnt. Scanning all my hard drives at once is unnecessary and take to much time.

I'd like to second the ability to select specific drives for scan. I have no need to scan the recovery partition of a system and it simply adds more time to an already laborious scan. Also when selecting where to download the virus definitions (which I agree with Igor, it's too large to try to save in memory) when I click the ... button I don't get anything. No window to select a folder, nothing. I have to open a command prompt and create the folder I want to use then manually type it into the line. Same thing for the temp folder when doing a thorough scan.

I also had an issue with creating a folder for the virus defs. I just boot back into XP and created a folder off the C:\ root and the reboot off the Rescue CD and pointed the virus def. download to that prior created folder.
My two cents on how this should work is Avast should prompt you to where you want to create the folder and file in an explorer type screen display and then you select where you want them created.

Just some tips for working with the buggy Rescue CD. To create folders for things like temp files and virus updates open a command prompt and use mkdir. I usually create one folder on the root of the C: drive of whatever drive I'm scanning call avtmp.
mkdir c:\avtmp
Then when I go to download the latest virus definitions I already have a folder I can select.
Now I'm very curious when this product is going to get updated because as an Avast! reseller I refuse to sell the Rescue CD until it's working properly. That means the browse folder buttons need to be fixed, the issues with 64bit registries needs to be fixed and all the other little nagging features that would make this unusable to an average person. You should be able to hand this disk to anyone and tell them to boot from it and run a scan without any further instructions.

Mine has a virus definitions file from sometime in September of last year and it WILL NOT connect to the internet to get an update, although it runs through and gives an appearance of having connected.
In this day and age I would have EXPECTED it to figure out that I have a wireless connection and use that, it would have to ask for the SSID that is fair enough, so do O/Ss the first time around.
It won't connect with an ethernet cable either.
I see little/no need for a temp area to hold the latest definitions file (if I am ever able to GET one).
The .vpx on the regular avast seems to be around 45 Meg., very few modern machines have less than 4 Gig of RAM, surely a totally in RAm file system can't fill that up ?
Maybe a non volatile place to put a report file is desirable, but I think everything needed to connect, update and run should fit in a hundred meg or less.
It insists on a .vps file, but I can't find a way to get that - the regular avast that I run every night does not have any .vps files, just .vpx
I agree, it is essentially useless to many/most people with a suspect system that is already down, i.e. it is in no way a stand alone "rescue disk" that can cleanse off viruses and "rescue" a system from an infection - which is the expectation that most people probably have.

PS, although I got a message about "revoking" my order for this DVD there was no guidance on how to do that.
I can't find anything on the web about how to do that either and I think there is only a 14 day window.
Given how much time I have already wasted on this it seems incredibly unlikely that I will get anything useful from this disk before things time out.
So, how do I get my money back ?
Is proof of destruction required, or do they just accept that it was useless ? (to ME, in the way that I tried to use it, etc.)
I am quite happy to return it, or provide proof of having scored it up with a utility knife (-:

I just get my ARD cd the other day. As I test it, My CD does not connect to get update viruses definitions, but it asks me where to get the vir-def on my hard drive.
Any one knows the extension type, a part of its name and the location place where I can find it on Win. XP?

THAT is part of the mystery (to me).
It is content with the 400.vps file that came on the DVD, but of course that is nearly 6 months old.
The windows installation of avast seems to use .vpx files and there are no .vps files anywhere on
my C: drive.

When you use Avast AV from your bootable Avast! Rescue Disc CD ( the first item on the vertical menu), at one point, it shows 2 options. Rather download the latest virus definitions vsp or to look for vsp in a specific repertory of a Hard Disk you have.
I wont to download the VPS but a warning box sais first that the connection to the Internet is not established and asks me if I wish to connect.
I clic yes. Then a dialogbox opens and asks me the path to VPS file.
Search for
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\defs\...
In this repertory you've got two repertories named of the latest date of virus definitions downloaded.
Today they are named "12031100" and "12031100_stream".
Select "12031100" and it loads or downloads and stays in memory.
Then, only, you can start your scan with updated virus definitions.
I just wish you not to have to use it. ;)
