Title: Error message opening MS Outlook
Post by: CafeNut on October 19, 2004, 07:49:38 PM
Two computers were recently changed from McAfee to Avast (Uninstall followed by Install).  Now we receive this message when opening MS Outlook:

The add-in “C:\progra~1\vso\outscan.dll” could not be installed or loaded.  This problem may be resolved by using detect and repair on the help menu.  Unable to load “C:\progra~1\vso\outscan.dll”.  You may be out of memory, out of system resources, or missing a .dll file.

The system is looking for uninstalled drivers.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?  What is the fix?

WinXP Home OpSys; Outlook 2002 SP2

Thank you.

The fix is relativly easy. Remove McAfee completely. Using the add/remove in control panel isn't doing that. You also need to clean the registry.

Links to site which tell you how to remove Mcafee completely can be found HERE (http://www.experts-exchange.com/Applications/Viruses/Q_20848067.html#10094554) (registration required)

or look at McAfee help (http://www.mcafeehelp.com) to see how to completely remove the version you have/had

I checked and followed McAfee instructions.  I could not locate any McAfee related files as indicated.  I am unsure of the directions (just above a "novice" ability here) at "experts-exchage".

Any additional ideas or thoughts?

Thank you.

As I said (and as McAfee's help says) you also need to clean the registry. Have you done so? If not HERE (http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=677) is the explanation for McAfee 5.2 and Windows XP.

In short: Delete the file extend.dat.
Details: Please follow the following instructions:

To configure Windows to show all files

1.   Do one of the following:

   *   In Windows 98/Me/2000, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
   *   In Windows XP, click Start > My Computer.

2.   Do one of the following:

   *   In Windows 98, click View > Folder Options.
   *   In Windows Me/2000/XP, click Tools > Folder Options.

3.   On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
4.   Do one of the following:

   *   In Windows 98, in the Advanced settings box, under the Hidden files folder, click Show all files.
   *   In Windows Me/2000/XP, under the Hidden files folder, uncheck Hide protected operating system files, and click Show hidden files and folders.

5.   If you see a warning dialog box, click Yes.
6.   Click Apply.
7.   Click OK.

To repair the problem

1.   Start Windows Explorer.
2.   Locate and delete the Extend.dat file.
   The default location of Extend.dat depends on your version of Windows:

   *   In Windows 98, the location is C:\Windows\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.
   *   In Windows NT 4.0, the location is %Userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.
   *   In Windows 2000/XP, the location is C:\Documents And Settings\<your-login-name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.

Cheers
