Which is the best free firewall that can be used smoothly with windows 7 firewall and avast!6 free....?
-
Most firewalls won't work with the windows 7 firewall generally it is only one firewall running/installed. The Avast Internet Security suite's firewall is meant to be compatible, but of course you are going to be using avast free and no firewall in that.
Best is also subjective, what is best for someone isn't necessarily best for all.
There are several topics already about firewalls in the General forum.
-
There is w7 firewall control by sphinx software.
It makes configuring w7 firewall (inbound and outbound) much easier.
I tried it briefly - seemed ok.
-
I did have Online Armor Free until I discovered that OA was causing difficulties with downloads on my Windows 7. For now I am using the Windows firewall. I seems that MicroSoft has created a better firewall. :)
I must correct myself DavidR is so right outbound protection is a must anymore. And after further research it wasn't OA Free that caused the problem. I was something entirely different. I'm going back to OA Free.
-
If you are behind a router firewall, then the W7 firewall is more then enough. If you aren't behind a router, then just set the W7 firewall to "public" and you're good to go. Don't waste time and resources on complicate 3rd party firewalls.
-
Whilst the win7 firewall is better than previous incarnations of the windows firewall, the outbound protection is disabled by default, that should be enabled.
Any malware that manages to get past your defences will have free reign to connect to the internet (and not all malware comes from the internet) to either download more of the same, pass your personal data (sensitive or otherwise, user names, passwords, keylogger retrieved data, etc.) or open a backdoor to your computer, so I believe outbound protection is essential.
-
I use privatefirewall 7.0 from privacyware.com. free, easy to use, learning mode, etc.
I have had no problems with integration or while running avast.
As you know results may vary depending on computer, user etc, but I have this set-up on 5 PCs and 2 laptops using XP, Vista and Win 7 with no problems anywhere.
-
Windows firewall.....
Windows firewall in windows vista and win 7 are stronger....
-
Strong doesn't cut it if the user can't set it up as on their own, it is rules based and the user has to have some general firewall knowledge to set the rules and as I mentioned enable outbound protection.
-

This is a good recommendation for ZoneAlarm, it's easy to use and strong. :)
-
Sorry I don't use the words easy to use and Strong in relation to Zone Alarm in the same sentence.
I personally don't feel it is that strong, easy to use is a somewhat subjective term as to strengthen it up I feel you have to stray away from the default low sensitivity settings.
I left ZA many, many years ago when it was very user friendly hardly a peep out of it at all and it did nothing about Blaster, etc. etc. That really is a long time ago and I have never forgotten that or been tempted back. On the other hand Outpost 1.0 free and later Outpost Firewall Pro versions have never let me down and it is relatively easy to use.
-
Correct me if I am wrong. But hasn't Zone Alarm caused and/or created conflicts with avast!? ???

Yeah, they had their bad times together in the past...

You're right.
And it's still no dream team, imo.

Yep! I remember this in the past too when I switch from ZoneAlarm to Comodo FW and now I'm using Outpost Pro FW I bought a lifetime licence from Outpost for 30% off ;)

IMO, there are some people in this thread smoking wacky weed. I've been a long time user of ZA & avast!.
The dream team for avast! is avast!, WinPatrol and ZA. Secure and no problems.
I've got about 6 months left on my subscription to AIS, it's a shame to let it go to waste, but MSE keeps my computer more secure than avast!.
It would be nice if you would encourage me to go back to AIS.
But the BS your spreading isn't helping matters. ::)
-

OT: Excused me rdmaloyjr you're avatar tell me you're a smoking wacky weed for using ZA far to long because of a very poor proactive security test in the free version, unless you're using ZoneAlarm Extreme Security version which is not to bad but not free and you can't beat Outpost Pro lifetime licence which is a great price to pay or Private firewall and Comodo for free. I've had enough of Comodo for 4 years using the v5.4 because its getting a bit heavy on my XP and Outpost Pro its just right ;D
Now I know DavidR using Outpost Pro and if I have a minor problem with it I'll send him a PM and free beer ;D
-
Avast Free and PC Tools Firewall Plus works fine.
(But, consider Avast IS.)
-
@ rdmaloyjr According to Virus Bulletin and av-comparitive.org MSE lags way behind avast in every area. So if you use MSE you get what you ask for...trouble. With all due respest instead of wiggling your finger start using your mind and listen to wisdom. As far as using wacky weed it is not those who know what's what that you should worry about. ;D
-
I would suggest you for lifetime license for Outpost Firewall Pro 7.5 and avast free..
No many after one year for any security product but a great protection.
avast power is its community which no one else have.
But I am paying for ESET NOD32 and ditching avast free on my one PC till version 7 releases because I hate avast's UI as I hope it could be made more good looking and easy to use like ESET. No comments on avast GUI please.
Outpost Firewall is the best. Even it is used by AVG,Bull Guard,Quick Heal, and many security vendors in their products.
@rdmaloyjr
If you want better protection Use Outpost Firewall pro with avast free (Pro will be best).
Thanks
Ash

Ashish Singh,
Right now I'm using AIS as I don't want to let my subscription to AIS go to waste.
When AIS expires I don't know if I will stay with avast Free or go back to MSE, it depends on AIS's performance.
I definitely will return to ZA Free upon AIS's expiration!

Actually its your money and your choice but Zone Alarm is not good.
Your choice is telling me as if you are telling 1 year old boy to guard the house.
ZA premium products are good no doubt but not the free one.
NOTE: ITS MY PERSONAL REVIEW
Just to keep you safe online I would suggest you to have avast Pro antivirus (avast free if not possible)
If you want everything free then you can have avast free with Outpost Security Suite 7.1 @ free.agnitum.com. Install avast and then Outpost free.

Ashish

I had a 1960 Chevy Impala coupe before I went in the service, and I got a used 1970 Dodge Challenger shortly after I got out of the service. I've wondered for years, which one of those was the best car I ever owned. It was probably, the 1969 Chevy El Camino, or maybe it was...
All threads like this prove, is that there is no winner, and it just brings the fanbois out of the woodwork to convince you that their choice is best. Frankly, they're all like the lucky rabbit's foot a friend of mine carried for years. It worked great, right up until he was hit by a truck.
Edit:
I remember which was best now, it was the Harley Fat Boy.
-
Ashish,
Thank you for your concern, but I'm a long time user of ZA Free and that experience has taught me ZA Free is one of the best fw's there are.
ZA Free has never let me down. :)

You must watch this then.

Most people will disagree on this but you can read about detail about Levels

Most people will disagree on this
Because it is testing HIPS and not the firewall.
Because the tests aren't independent and he receives money for them.
Because the drawbacks of the leak tests posted a lot of time here.
Would we trust in the Matousec tests? NO.

Is there any firewall tester out there to trust?
(Curious :))

Is there any firewall tester out there to trust?
If you consider the firewall-only work (block undesirable inbound and outbound traffic), there are a lot of good and secure firewalls out there...
In my personal opinion:
Comodo (http://www.filehippo.com/download_comodo/)
Online Armour (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html)
OutPost Free Security Suite (http://free.agnitum.com//)
-
Is there any firewall tester out there to trust?
@Tech.....i dont think he asked for recomended firewalls...?

You're right. My fault. But... I've said all recommended firewall do their work... no need to test them for the specific firewall work. You can test HIPS, but you don't need to test the firewall inbound/outbound capabilities (of the good ones).
-
I have set the "Enhanced Security Permissions" to medium in the PC Tools firewall and it runs better than when it's on high. I can't get anyone at their forums, not even the head guy, to explain exactly what the differences between the three levels for ESP are though. None of their help options explain it at all.

I agree that there are some excellent free firewalls but that review link is taken from Matousec 2006 testings so its not really relevent for today.

Not only is it outdated but as has been said many times, Matousec does not really test firewall effectiveness but rather the level of HIPS based protection. Of course any product without HIPS, such as the Windows Firewall, will not fare well in their "tests". I will still maintain that the only job of a firewall should be to monitor connections. All that other stuff should be done by other applications that a user can choose to install or not.

If you don't have special requirements,I think windows 7 firewall is enough!

If you use instant messingers, most likely it wont.

I tried ZA and it bogged my system down badly. I'm happy so far with the newest version of PC Tools. It's a lot better and much more user friendly than it used to be. I think now being owned by Symantec has been good. The firewall is much more intelligent in automatically allowing known safe things. You can also very easily make it just a 2 way firewall that only monitors connections by putting the slider for "Enhanced Security Permissions" (their version of HIPS) on low. it works very well on the medium setting too with very few alerts and those only for unknown and / or unsigned things.

For many people, it will be enough. If a bad IM file got through, that's because the IM shield in Avast didn't catch it. Most likely because there wasn't a signature for it yet. These things happen but very rarely.

+1 :D

The Matousec results are misleading.
He is not (economic) independent and he earns for this misleading: he is testing HIPS not firewalls.
I suppose the "good" firewalls are paying him for that.
-
I only wish he could set up a decent website with his money... :P

Have anyone tried Private firewall.........
It is really good and does not give 2 many pp-ups and user friendly.......

Good that someone noticed, I basically use adblock plus to block all image, banners, logos, etc. in signatures, I hate all the extra space they take up.

Now that I have Windows 7 64 bit, I have abandoned PC Tools. It wasn't creating rules correctly and in some cases, not at all. It refused to create rules for many 64 bit apps, in particular CCleaner. I submitted the problem to them and they replied by saying that the firewall had known issues on 64 bit systems and that my problem was caused by a conflict with the Web Shield of Avast. They advised me to disable the shield which I was not willing to do. I am now using the free version of Windows 7 Firewall Control and I'm very pleased with it. A strong two way firewall with no HIPS was just what I wanted.

The only problem with the Pctools firewall for me is that..........
Installed about 5 times thought these 2 years at random dates, and every time i install it, it blocks up my network and i had to use system restore......
After Symantec bought Pctools, their products are not so good, always crashes my machine...... :-\

Does anyone use Online Armor with MagicJack?
Back when I used Online Armor it constantly added multiple entries of MagicJack, I added exclusions for all and any entries of MagicJack, but it didn't do any good.
Maybe this problem has been fixed?
My subscription to MagicJack has expired, I'm considering renewing.

Did you excludes the exe file of MagicJack, some firewall can have further problem when Online Armor is not recognised as MagicJack to their trust vendors list. Does Online Armor have a trust vendors list in their software otherwise I have no idea ???

I'm taking Online Armor for a test drive again, it seems much better than the last time I took it for a spin. :)
The last time was a disaster. :(
I'm now test driving 5.1 Beta.
What is new in Online Armor 5.1?
Greatly increased compatibility and stability with other applications
We focused on improving the compatibility and stability of Online Armor in conjunction with products like Google Chrome, Sandboxie, Panda Cloud AV and others.
Overhauled white list settings
We changed the white list settings slightly. In addition it is now possible to optionally trust all digitally signed files that were signed using a certificate that hasn't been used in connection with fraudulent or malicious activities in the past.
New upload feature
You are not sure about a certain program? You can now easily upload it to the Emsisoft Anti-Malware Network and get the file scanned using Emsisoft Anti-Malware.
More than 100 other bug fixes
More than 100 reported bugs and issues in Online Armor 5.0 are fixed in 5.1. Those fixes include for example a recently reported vulnerability with Sinowal drive-by downloads, freezes during the SCW, freezes when executing applications from network shares, various Online Armor GUI freezes, cases where Online Armor forgot about certain application rules as well as many others.
