No.

Even with the MBAM Pro option on both my systems I haven't excluded each others files.

The only exclusion I have set in MBAM Pro is to excludes the c:\windows\temp\_avast_ sub-folder, which is where avast unpacks/scans files, so you don't want duplication of files in that folder or possible conflict. This isn't an issue in the MBAM free version as it isn't a resident application.

I have the MBAM pro with real time protection. I had to add Avast to MBAM Ignore List in order to permit Avast updates and other Avast communications with web.

Right-click the MBAM icon in system tray.
Select 'Start scanner' to bring up the user interface.
In the 'Ignore List' tab click the 'Add' button.
Enter the full  pathname of AvastSvc.exe
Click 'Add' again and enter the pathname of the Avast folder.

Then click Exit to close the user interface.

Well since MBAM isn't a firewall I find this a somewhat strange occurrence and one I have never come across.

Not to mention it is the avast.setup file which is responsible for updates, so excluding avastsvc.exe should have zero impact on updates ???

That's why the whole Avast folder is excluded. MBAM Website Blocking acts somewhat like an outgoing  firewall.

Only if the IP address is on its malware block list and MBAM would be alerting if it were and that isn't mention that. The other problem is that MBAM free doesn't have the Protection module enabled (which includes malicious site blocking) and that is what the OP is using.

So lets deal with the OPs problem, based on what they have installed.

Again I have no problem with MBAM Pro and avast updating on two systems and zero exclusions.

Right - there can't be a problem with MBAM free.
