Title: internet problems after installation
Post by: GmaN98 on July 31, 2011, 06:27:23 AM
Ok heres the deal. I put Avast Pro on all the computers we have in the house. All the others except my main one in my room all have problems with ALL the web browsers on them. The problem is that they all cannot connect to web pages and i get the Error 102 (connection refused by server). They were all working before I put Avast on them. I do hope someone out there is able to help me this is driving me crazy lol.

Try going into avast settings \ updates \ proxy settings and change to direct connection

Which browsers are you using ? what systems are you running ? do you use third party firewalls on these computers ? what were the previous av's used on these systems and how did you remove them ?

Browsers: IE, Chrome, Firefox (none of them work)

comp upstairs is using WinXP

laptop is win7 64 bit

i never thought to remove the old AVs on them because i thought they were gone...where are they located?

Theres your problem then, remove them via add remove programs and then go to here http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/ and run the removal tool for any antivirus program you have used on the systems after you have first uninstalled them from remove programs.
Once they have all been removed with reboots inbetween each one you can try a repair of avast but you might have to reinstall as it may have been corrupted.

If the laptop is also having connection problems i would uninstall and reinstall, start with the pro version this time and then insert your license rather than upgrading from free.
Make sure that any preinstalled av's that came with the system when you bought it like ( norton, McAfee ) are removed before installing your new copy of avast.

laptop is wireless, upstairs computer is wired. I am starting to think that this could be a update issue on avast's part.

If that were so the forum would be flooded with people not being able to connect, im out of ideas anyway so if you stick around someone else should be able to come up with some ideas and possible solutions.

I am not sure if this could be a problem or not. Maybe somebody here can confirm if this would be a problem. Go into internet explorer and click Tool>Internet options then the connections tab. Click the "Lan Settings" button. Do you have anything under Proxy Server?

I had the same problem on 32 bit XP pro some months ago, and avast tech tried to help me get it going.  After awhile gave up and installed AVG.

Now I'm having the same problem on 64 bit XP (different computer) which is why I caught this thread.

There have been no problems on Vista 64bit, and laptop with XP home. I will reinstall and see if that helps.

I use a bastion firewall (untangle) with it's own DNS server.  I can ping by URL name (i.e. google.com) and get response, but any browser hangs awaiting response from web server — apparently being blocked by avast web shield.

Same problem after reinstall.

Both these problem computers had run avast for years without problems.

The 32bit system was used daily and the 64bit system was used once a month or so.

I not going to futz with this, I'll just get AVG.

I found all that by checking google before I made this thread, and it still never worked. I just find it odd that my main computer isnt having this problem. It has to be with latest installs of Pro, since I have had pro on my main comp since january with no problems whatsoever\.

Some avast users have reported that repairing Winsock helped the problem.

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=65054.0

You can reset XP SP3 Winsock using the following command.

netsh winsock reset catalog

Or use the fixit utility.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259

http://burrowowl.net/wordpress/200606/netsh_winsock_reset_catalog/

Quote
catalog: this is an argument to the “reset” instruction telling the netsh utility what we would like to reset, specifically the winsock catalog. The winsock catalog can be thought of as a list of software that has been inserted into your TCP/IP. By resetting this listing, you are reasserting which background widgets should be handling your networking tasks.

Edit: Try this command to see what is in the catalog.

netsh winsock show catalog
