Title: Cannot update avast! with Wildblue satellite internet
Post by: colorado_bob on August 04, 2011, 10:28:20 AM
I have been helping a friend who recently installed satellite internet service through a company called "Wildblue".  I installed avast! Free on her Win XP system.  It seems to work, except that it won't update (neither program nor definitions, neither automatic nor manual).  When I try a manual update, it shows a minimal length bar under "overall progress", and never moves from there.  The system continues to work while the update waits indefinitely.  It never seems to try to check for automatic updates (even though it is configured to do so).

I noticed that under UPDATE SETTINGS, neither choice was checked for "UPDATE PARAMETERS".  I checked "My computer is permanently connected to the internet", but that made no difference.

I have written to Wildblue's support, but wanted to check whether there are any known problems from this community.  As a satellite provider, they do provide some browser optimizations, including a proxy server, to overcome latency problems.

I have not yet registered this system (waiting until I see that it works), but it is well within the initial 30 days.  That shouldn't prevent updates, should it?

Has she been using F-Secure antivirus, if so this might be why.

Nope - no other anti-virus installed.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Sounds likely.  I won't be able to try it till I visit again.

Thanks!

:-[ no.  I considered, but was in a rush.  Hopefully that's it (and the rest of these answers are irrelevant).  I'll be back to look at it this weekend.

Which firewall..?  Windows
Other security related software..?  No
OS..?  XP SP3
Which avast..?  free antivirus
Which version..?  6.0.x (whatever version downloaded on July 25)

Thanks!

The reboot (after setting Direct Connection (No Proxy)) did it.

Thanks!
