Title: I wanna hear from Alwil - minor issue caused by SkinBuilder fixed
Post by: S.Z.Craftec on November 01, 2004, 03:25:08 AM
Hello everyone,

If it's possible it would be great to read whole thread, but if you experience lack of free time, at least read last page of this thread:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=11;action=display;threadid=8219;start=30 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=11;action=display;threadid=8219;start=30)

I found where is the problem and I spent my free time on fixing exactly 32 skins (mine, Martin's, RejZor's and Darren's). Actually, it's a problem caused by SkinBuilder (again), not with our skins... SkinBuilder solves some things in a strange way  ::) . It was a huge job, and if we want avast! users to stay happy, it would be great to hear from Alwil members now.

As I said, I fixed all skins that were affected with that little (but sometimes annoying) problem, and now it's Alwil's turn... I just need someone to tell me where to send all those compressed skin files (ASWCS). There is exactly 32 skin files in total with 9.6 Mb in physical size. Is it better to zip them all in one file, or to make few zip files and send them like that ?

Again, here is a list of all skins that I fixed:

Thanks in advance !

Sasha

Hey Craftec,
It's radicalb21. If you want you can upload them to my ftp and send them the username and password I gave you so they can retrieve them. If you need the info again I can send it to you. If you need anything just ask. I'm glad to help in any way.

Sasha, Yes I think your hard work should be included to make a new selection of skins for anyone who wants to use them. I know that the cursor problem has been solved by you in remaking these skins. Maybe VLK or someone from Alwil will go ahead and give you a place to upload these skins for the members and others to be able to use. Sure hope they do as you have done a great job with them and have spent alot of time and effort in fixing them. ;D

Thanks guys for your support. It would be great if we can replace all old skins with new ones I fixed. I didn't change anything inside skins, so no one of authors should be affraid... I just fixed little tiny winy issue, so no one will have those cursor problems any more...

Uploading to some FTP space would be nice, but not too great... I think, it would just make more confussion among the avast! users. Official avast! web site contains old (problematic skins), and now we have another WEB space to download fixed skin files.

IMHO, everything should be on avast! official web site if you ask me...

So, I think, the only solution for this problem, is to wait until Alwil respoonds to this thread. I just hope it will be soon. I received few complains about cursor issue through PM system.

Alwil ?

Cheers !

Sasha, et al,
I think it would be great if Alwil officially endorses your fixes to these skins, and will put these new skins on their website noting that you have revised/fixed them.  Then all avast! users will know that these skins are revised and freely available from the official Alwil website.
 ;D

If needed/wanted I can make them availeble through my server and website.

Thanks Eddy, Radicalb21 also offered his web space, but as I said in one of my previous replies...

It would be much better to synchronize the whole thing with Alwil first.

Thansk again people for your generous offers !

Still waiting...  ;D

Agreed, one place is less confusing. But what if the Avast website isn't reacheble? Perhaps having one "mirror" is a idea.

Just a thought ;)

Good work Sasha. Hope that you get an official answer soon.
Like you said, better will be the entire update of the skin page for downloading  8)

Well, the best will be that when the users update to 4.5 (official release) it could identify the installed skins and update them too. What do you think?

That would be good, but first we have to place original (fixed) files on primary web page first (to avoid any possible confussion) and then someone can make mirror...

Cheers !

Technical, that's exactly why I think skins should be updated as soon as possible... even before releasing 4.5 final.

That way, we'll be sure that everybody who downloads 4.5 has latest version of the skins. I'm guessing here that with 4.5 few skins will be inside download package, so we want those skins to be few of those that I fixed... we don't wanna release some "buggy" skins with 4.5, right ?

Now is the right time to do something...

Sorry, Vlk is rather busy today (even I cannot reach him ;))
I'm sure he'll let you know as soon as possible!
Thanks for the fixes!

I would sure like to see the fixed skins on the Alwil Skins page too.  I also wonder if some of the fixed skins that come with avast will be made into a program update.

I'm sure they will put few skins in standard package. Anyway, Vlk said to me once that they will put one or two (I'm not sure any more) skins made by me as well.

Of course it would be great to put "fixed" skines in standard package. I don't know which skins will be part of standar package, but I'm sure Silver Panel made by Martin will be there. I have fixed version of that skin as well, so it would be great if they receive them before they want to release 4.5... that's for sure...

Igor - thanks for your respond, we will wait... nothing else we can do, I guess...

Cheers !

I thought I read some where in the forum that the new 4.5 also has a non skinned avast.  I don't have the beta version installed right now to look at it.  If that's ture what does it look like.

Since I'm kind of new here I've been spending a lot of time reading older post...can't remember all I read...to old of a brain. :)

Sasha , your work here is legendary and im sure you hear it from everyone but I see a great use for the skinless version as well.
As an exercise i sat my wife in front of a normal (default skin) and told her to scan the computer.
after clicking a few buttons she got up and walked out.
The point im trying to make is that to someone unfamiliar who only uses a skin once or twice a year and has a low desire to learn and comprehend it all then it needs to be really simple, and the numbers down the side are a great help. Most of the time I do all the maintenance but just occasionally a situation arises and its nice to know she can manage it. ;D ;D ;D

Sasha,  I do have those...I forgot about them :-[  But one reason I didn't use the Lite on was the text was to small.  I just opened mine and the text on the one I have is smaller, which makes it harder to read.  The one you show in your screen shot has larger text than mine does.  Did you change it?

No I didn't change anything regarding fonts. That's only how that skin looks like on my system or on any other system that has ADOBE TYPE MANAGER 4.1 installed + LUCIDAGRANDE (spot that it is only one word, there is also Lucida Grande font, but I'm not using that one). LucidaGrande font that I'm using contains two files: PFB and PFM extensions, not standard FON or TTF extensions. If someone doesn't have Adobe Type Manager installed, he/she can not see that font in Lite-On skin. avast! automatically substitutes that font with some other standard Windows font.

You can read about Adobe Type Manager in here:

http://www.adobe.com/products/atm/mainwin.html (http://www.adobe.com/products/atm/mainwin.html)

That's why my font in Lite-On looks so smooth.

Sasha, Just a question. What do you know of Microsoft Office Power Point version 2003? It recognizes .ppt .pps and .pot. Is this anything useful to have on my pc other than Adobe Acrobat? :D

Neal, Power Point is for presentations (in a data show with slides...).
Adobe Acrobat is for read (or make) pdf files, static ones, like a word+picture processor to make special papers, folders...

What are you looking for?
Oopss, we're becoming off-topic. Maybe it's better open a new thread...

Sasha,  I know you can't redo all the great skins you made, but if you do make any more new skins would you take into consideration those users who don't have the special fonts you have on your PC?  I like the looks of your Lite on with the special font, but I really don't want to have to install another program just to have better looking text in avast.

That's not just to have better looking text in avast! It's for smoothing fonts when you print them out. If you wanna print something in text mode, you'd be surprised how smooth it can look...

Lite-On isn't my latest skin... all other skins I made after that one, I made them using "normal" Windows/MS fonts like ARIAL, ARIAL NARROW, TAHOMA, VERDANA, TIMES etc.

Thanks for comment... :-[

And best of all, I respect all those people that doesn't like skins, as well... People have right to choose, but I'm here just in case they want their best antivirus tool to look kinda different... avast! is unique in every way... avast! is the only antivirus with skins... at least, it's the first one in the world...

Cheers !

OK, I finally found some time for this issue.

First, could you please explain once more what should be fixed in those skins? I mean, we always considered the thing that the cursor changes on the drag area as a feature (a welcome one I'd say - to make it quite clear that this is the place to use to move the window).

The fact that the context menu sometimes behaves as transparent for the mouse cursor is another thing... but that's IMHO unrelated to the skins, this would have to be fixed in code...

Thanks
Vlk

Yeah that's exactly as you mentioned above... I don't see that issue as a bug, but if it can be fixed somehow, it would be great. I found a way on how to fix it from within the SkinBuilder. True, you won't see MOVE cursor anymore when you hover over draggable areas, but at least users won't be annoyed by those all of a sudden cursor ragings...

If you are interesetd I can send you all those skins, but please, first tell me what would be the best way to do that...

There is 32 files in total, and around 9.6 Mb in physycal size...

Cheers !

EDIT: sorry I just recalled something else... similar though... same thing, you called transparent context menus... sometimes you can also hear the sounds that those buttons produces if they are located under those context menus... I mean if you are hovering over the context menu, when buttons are below...
