Title: I may sound dumb...
Post by: blueyetiger on November 01, 2004, 03:44:53 AM
Okay, I just installed avast (home version) because I was infected with a trojan, and it says the norton won't coincide with it.  I have tried to find the answer through previous threads that were posted, but like I said in my subject line... I may be dumb :o  I turned the Norton auto-protect off, but when I try to download emails it says it was scanned with Norton not avast.  Please explain to me how it is doing the scanning instead of Avast.  I am sorry if I just overlooked the answer in the previous threads, but any help is appreciated.  I guess I'm having a "blonde day"

Blue,

Norton and Avast cannot be on the same computer as they both run resident and will conflict.  Even though you turned off the Norton Resident scanner, it is still configured to scan your emails.

Avast will not "overpower" Norton and take control.
What may happen is that neither AV will scan the mail neither knowing which is default.

I suggest that you make a choice between them.  If you want to remove Norton, it must be done correctly as Norton embedes itself deeply into the system.
You can obtain instructions on its' removal at www.symantec.com

Then we can go over your configuration of Avast.

By the way....What is a blonde day?

Take care and welcome to the forum.  ;)

..I think I know what she means. You're not from Essex are you?

Search for the topic 'Avast and Norton'  - there's a very useful thread  - it's on page 3 I think. If you want to run Avast you have to give Norton the elbow.
It'll show you how to get rid of Norton effectively.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I was able to uninstall norton and I installed Avast successfully... I think.  ::)  However, a friend of mine suggested Avast, but I can't get it to scan my email downloads.  I use Yahoo and he said it would work with that email program.  Is he correct?  If so, how do I get it to scan my yahoo downloads.  I read through the tutorials last night around 10, but I may have missed the answer because I had been sitting in front of the computer since 9 yesterday morning :'(  So again, any help is appreciated.  Oh and techie, a blonde day is a day when I feel like I give all blondes a bad name, because I am blonde and I felt like an idiot.

Thanks again everybody!

Probably if he is talking about version 4.5 Beta because it uses a new mail detection that will work automatically. Instructions here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=11;action=display;threadid=8044;start=0

Can you make a try and see if it's ok? Thanks.
