Title: Last Scan Shows 158 Files
Post by: swats123 on August 23, 2011, 03:14:08 AM
Hi

I am very concerned about the last Avast Scan which shows 158 password protected files which it cannot scan.  I never use passwords to protect my files.  What can this be?

Last week the scan came up clean, as usual.....No Threat Found. :'(

Have you elected to scan archives files 'All Packers' in your scan and which scan is it that you are doing ?

Files that can't be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.

Many programs (usually security based ones) password protect their files for legitimate reasons such as AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy, there are others (and avast doesn't know the password or have any way of using it even if it did know it).

When you run scans with the above programs and you delete harmful entries that they detect, a copy is kept (in quarantine/restore/backup) in case you need to reverse what you did. These are usually password protected, you should do some housekeeping and delete old backup/recovery/quarantine entries (older than two weeks or so), this will reduce the numbers of files that can't be scanned.

By examining 1) the reason given by avast! for not being able to scan the files, 2) the location of the files, you can get an idea of what program they relate to. You may need to expand the column headings to see all the text.

If you can give some examples of those file names, the locations and reason given why it can't be scanned might help us further ?

I do a Full System Scan with all the default settings.

Can you see with this?

I expanded as you suggested and the following is what I see:

C:\System Volume Information\-restore{F845E3D8-F751-4Be4-A620-64F2CA1BFB5F}\RP50\A0007490.exe|>logo.ico

I checked quite a few of the files and all seem to have the same long number changing only in the file name.

I do not know what files these can be, but many of them seem to be adobe files.

The only new change to my computer was Flash Player update to latest version.

Hope this helps you help me.

C:\System Volume Information\ is the Windows Restore folder.
Files are protected by Windows itself.
Don't worry about them. You can delete your old restore points if your computer is running ok and you want to get rid of them.

I can see it, not that it is of any help as the full path isn't displayed, the C:\...\ is all important as that location gives an indication of the program responsible for that file being password protected.

I don't see the A0007490.exe or |>logo.ico in that list of file names in your image.

Thanks for your reply.  I use ERUNT, and have System Restore turned off, but apparently it no longer is disabled.  How or why this happened, I do not know.  It must be that the enabling of System Restore is responsible for the sudden appearance of all these items.

Sorry, but I do not know how I can display the path except for the screenshot.

This is the screenshot of the item I typed:

Yes, but if you expand the column width before taking the screenshot then we can see the information.

- Expand Column Width, hover the mouse pointer over the column header divider until the pointer changes (see image, click to enlarge) left click and hold down the key whilst dragging the pointer to the right.

YES! I was able to delete the restore points by disabling Restore.  My new scan came up clean.
