Title: ** INTRODUCING: NEW BETA VERSION OF AVAST - NOW 6.0.1279 **
Post by: Vlk on August 24, 2011, 07:46:53 PM
The program update has now been officially released as v6.0.1289.
More details here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=84297
Thanks to everyone who helped testing.

Hi everyone,

we will soon be releasing a new program update of avast. And as usual, we're making it available for public testing a few days before the official release. The current version number is edit August 31: 6.0.1279.

This is hopefully going to be a smooth service release, mainly designed to fix some of the issues of the previous v6.0 builds.

Here's an [incomplete] list of the most important changes:
- New Script Shield - so far, it works in IE 32-bit and in Firefox. Chrome support coming soon!
- Web Shield now scanning all processes by default
- Stability improvements in aswSP.sys
- Better tracking of file sources
- WebRep now working in Firefox 6
- Under-the-hood improvements in the Behavior Shield and Sandbox modules
- Slight improvements in the product UI

And new in build 6.0.1273:
- Solved the Firefox crash issue
- A few stability improvements in the sandbox module (e.g. PDF reader support)
- Cosmetic changes in the UI

And new in build 6.0.1279:
- Solved a compatibility problem with QQ
- Solved a compatibility problem with certain Steam-based games
- Script Shield: Implemented a scanning cache which should prevent redundant/repetitive scans
- Script Shield: Implemented scan exclusion settings
- Script Shield: Now works with Firefox 7/8/9 betas
- Web Shield: scanning of all processes can now be disabled in shield's Expert Settings
- Cosmetic changes in the UI

links removed

You can either install from scratch, or over an existing installation of avast (any version).
Users of the previous beta can also use the normal in-product updater.

Thanks

Nice. I like the improvements, especially the idea of Web Shield scanning all processes. Not all HTTP traffic comes from browsers which were by default included in the scanning process.
Good to see Script Shield working with Firefox as well.

Are Raxco PerfectDisk slowdown fixes included in this build?

@jvidal: As far as I remember, QA dept hasn't been able to simulate this problem -- they asked you about exact SUMO version, but I don't remember how it was going...

I use the Firefox NoScript extension, and am wondering if there may be some issues between the two.  IE, what happens if NoScript blocks a script, etc.?  Anyway, I'll soon find out.

Just tested the previous Sandbox problems (in Pro version). There don't seem to have problems with videos like youtube but it is impossible to open a pdf (I use the Adobe Reader 10 browser extension) in a Sandboxed browser, firefox 6 for instance. This persisting problem is a bit annoying... :(

After installing the beta I get this error each time I check mail from my email program.
It's strange. For the avast service indicated HAS rights in the firewall.
And there is no log entry in the firewall indicating that it has been blocked.
Also if I remove the right, I get no box asking for access (the firewall always do that).
So it seems like there is something else wrong.
With the last version I could not check mail at all through avast (had to delete all entries).

This will happen if any other program is already listening on any of the ports 12025, 12110, 12119 or 12143 (redirected SMTP, POP, NNTP and IMAP). You can use e.g. TcpView to find out which app is listening on those ports and therefore preventing the avast mail scanner from working correctly.

I have just checked the Behavior Shield as you mentioned improvements in that also and I find that it appears to be scanning the unp999999.tmp files in the temp\_avast_\ folder.

Is this intended, I would have thought that there would be an implied exclusion of that folder since it is avast populating it ?

Mail Shield shows emails being scanned when they are downloaded but they do not show up in the Mail Shield Traffic History graph even today's graph.

Firefox 7.0B1  with NoScript - Nothing showing up under real-time Script Shield when I use FF. History graph is showing one scanned script on Wed from last week on all three computers but nothing since.  I do use IE once in a while.

All other shields appear to be working fine.

Just want to tell Script module works fine with Firefox 6 and IE 9 ;D
Had a BSOD blue screen a few hours ago when I tried to shut down my PC. The PC was to install the latest Windows Update for Windows7 for x64 based system (KB2570791). I remember seeing ashsvr or something likethat involved. I rebooted without problem after this failure and had to re-check and install this Windows Update. All proceeded smoothly!!!

Script shield is working in IE 9 and Firefox 6...

Sandboxie users, can you tell me if you have the same results as me?

If I use firefox without Sandboxie Avast starts to count the number of analized scripts for example mine counted 213 but then I satarted to use firefox Sandboxed and the script shield didn't continute to check more scripts.

Is it normal? or Avast is not checking scripts in firefox if you use Sandboxie?

Script Shield works for me in Firefox 6 with no issues using the NoScript extension.  It's also working fine with IE 8.0.6001.18702 32-bit.  Avast updated over 6.0.1203.

I modified the Firefox WebRep install.rdf to be compatible with Firefox 6 and it's working fine.

There are known and admitted problems with PC Tools and Avast's web shield. It's not really new , just an escalation of an already existing problem. I was having a problem with that firewall not creating rules for some applications, especially 64 bit ones. It refused to make connection rules for CCleaner for example. I was told after they investigated that it was due to a conflict with their ESP module and the Web Shield of Avast. I removed PC Tools as a result. It's very buggy with Windows 7, especially the 64 bit version.

hayc59, the question is, can you access the web from your browser?
I mean, it looks like the firewall is blocking the avast service (AvastSvc.exe) from accessing the Internet. And since in this new version, all HTTP requests from all processes are routed through WebShield (AvastSvc.exe), blocking the process from accessing the Internet effectively means blocking all processes from accessing the web.

Try deleting the AvastSvc.exe entry in the firewall - it's quite likely it will be recreated, with the right rules.

Thanks
Vlk

Script Shield works fine with FIrefox 6 32bit. 8)

BTW, is there any plans to add a way to prevent WebShield from scanning all processes (i.e. INI settings or like that)?
I know scanning all processes can prevent viruses more efficiently but this also make outbound firewall nearly useless.
Once AvastSvc.exe is trusted by firewall (and I do so) then all apps can connect to the internet via HTTP without FW prompt.
This is not good for me... :-\

Edit:
Indeed a prompt ("trying to connect to port 12080") is appear, but it's still not good as I can't block specific IPs.

Some existing topics, if admuncher is acting as a localhost proxy (I don't use it) and that gets in before the web shield then the web shield would have nothing to scan (regardless of what that traffic is), unless you uncheck Ignore local communications, as this is still on in the beta.

So I don't know as the new beta settings don't clarify if that would include other localhost traffic. See images, click to expand.

Well Still no option in Windows XP 64 bit to turn off the Auto Sandbox feature. No pull down option nothing it works in XP Vista And 7. Yes people will say why not switch to windows 7. Well windows 7 sucks as a service machine needed for repairs and hard drive recoverys XP 64 reads everything 7 says oooh hard drive not readable.

So please I need to turn off this option in Windows XP 64 bit for the reason When I try to open some of my hard drive recovery programs it almost locks the computer because sandbox option comes up which I hate with a passion.

autosandbox component should be disabled in WinXP 64-bit by default (in 1270 beta build) -- i'm going to recheck it if it's really disabled. If not, today's new beta refresh will fix this bug.

in this new version, all HTTP requests from all processes are routed through WebShield (AvastSvc.exe)

for example if i want to make a rule in my firewall to block babylon translator from connecting to the internet i can't do that anymore with the new avast beta version.

Hi friends do this new build showed improvement in the autosandbox and behaviour shield? Because last time when i tried some exe files(mostly patches for some software program) to run they never trigered any autosandbox or behaviour shield alarm. Those sample are flaged as dangerous by more than half the scanner in virus total. In my opinion though avast's defination doesnot pick up the danger but still Behaviour shield or more importantly autosandbox should give some warning.

Thank you all

Thanks
Vlk

Nice release!

Installed right over .1203
Script shield is working perfectly with Firefox 6 and IE8.
WebRep working with FF6.
So far all programs behaviour inclusive Outlook 2007 seems pretty normal.

Thanks for this one!

I installed Avast 6.0.1270 on the top of 6.0.1203 in my Windows 7 PC and it seems to be working fine...

Advise..rm
I can certify you my Script Shield works fine while browsing in Tzuk Sandboxie v. 3.57.07 :D

I installed Sandboxie beta 3.57.08 a few minutes ago and I still see no reaction in my Script Shield while broswing thru Firefox 6 sandboxed.

Any suggestions?

A pitty about the development FF versions, but understandable. But you should really get some info on the way Firefox is developed now, or you will get a lot of headaches every 6 weeks when a new version is released.
To put it simply there are a few development branches for bigger changes + 3 main development versions of Firefox that get a version bump every 6 weeks (the release is time based):

It looks like this:

If you ask me a simple "click this popup for more info" on the bottom of the popup with white font would do it. Same size and font type as the rest of the popup, not thiss big ass thing.

I actually like Firefox' new update policy as I understand it.

Firefox used to lump a whole bunch of improvements into one release and then wait maybe 6 months to a year for all of the improvements to be completed and tested before issuing an update to FF.   Security issues of course were fixed through updates as soon as the fix was complete.

Now Firefox is basically issuing a new release every time a major improvement, many of which are not visible to the user, is completed.  IMO this is a far better approach.   Along with this Firefox has now changed the install directory to just plain Firefox without a version number.  Users get notified when an update is available and just apply it.  So far this has worked great for me with respect to Firefox.

I won't go into any more details about it here, but suffice is to say, like I said I like this change in philosophy by Firefox.  Why sit around and wait for an improvement six months after it is completed in order to get lumped with other improvements?  Clearly if multiple improvements are interrelated that is taken into consideration if they need to be released together.

The above is why Firefox plans to do away with version numbers in the the "About" box though you will be able to find the version number by going to "about:support"

After updating with latest version I get these errors
when trying to update SUPERAntispyware and MalwareBytes
with avast! shut down or disabled updates happen just fine

hayc59, the question is, can you access the web from your browser?
I mean, it looks like the firewall is blocking the avast service (AvastSvc.exe) from accessing the Internet. And since in this new version, all HTTP requests from all processes are routed through WebShield (AvastSvc.exe), blocking the process from accessing the Internet effectively means blocking all processes from accessing the web.

Try deleting the AvastSvc.exe entry in the firewall - it's quite likely it will be recreated, with the right rules.

Thanks
Vlk

Hi,

There is a incompatibility between avast beta 6.0.1270 and a FireFox (6.0) extension:

HTTPS Everywhere 1.0.1

When this extension is enabled, FireFox simply does NOT open.
I am not sure there is a fix for this problem, which is not a big deal anyway ;-)

Otherwise, the Script Shield is working fine with FFx 6 and IExplorer 9 32bit!

Take a look at the extension website to see what it does:

https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere

Thanks

Honestly, I think that extension is a total waste of time and actually leaves you less well protected as the web shield isn't monitoring HTTPS traffic. So you lose the protection of probably the most effective shield in avast.

I'll make a preview on how i think it should look like.

As for the HTTPS Everywhere extension. On one end, yes, you prevent Web Shield from scanning the connection but then again but on the other, with HTTPS you make sure that there is no injected content along the way and that the web site is trusted. I'd say it's very unlikely that such webpage would be infected though i won't say it's not possible. In that case File System Shield and Auto Sandbox should do the trick.

I think there is one more solution. Instead of the ugly buttons on the alarm (red) and update (green) pop-ups you could leave only links with the words "More detals...>>>" in big white bold font.

And some words about the Russian translation. The English "More details..." is translated as "Развернуть..." but the Russian word "развернуть" means "to expand" in English. The right translation would be "Подробнее...". Please, correct the translation on all pop-ups.

This is how i'd do the popups:

It will do the job, looks nice and is very discrete. Looks light years better imo...
+1 I totally agree
May be it would be well for English but in Russian this text will be much longer: "Щёлкните это окно, чтобы посмотреть подробности...".

Well the popup can be extended as far as i know.

They could just use "More details..." text with the same font as the rest and underlined so it looks like a link.

Like this:

Underline gives the feeling that "More details..." text is in fact a link that will lead you to the extra info despite the fact that entire popup is a button... Looks nice and will work for languages that have longer words as well. Simple and effective. And looks good as well.

The update popups...

What I like:
I like that the version number is included.

What I don't like:
The button...It just doesn't look right...

+1!

That button thing's gotta go!  It just looks out of place.  Version number is very cool!

That's the one I'd like to see! :-* :-* :-*
But make the dark green area wit the "More details..." a bit more narrow so you don't cover the "recycle arrows" in the background! The width could go all the way over from left to right in the original green area or even shaded.

That dark green square that you see behind is just a square of the similar color that i used to cover that white and yellow ugly thing so i could write my text on the popup. If avast! guys add the wgite "More details..." text like i did there won't be this green rectangle in the background.

Yes, it is much better. But I'd like the Avast team not to forget to make some correction in Russian in the pop-ups of all colours:
Quote
The English "More details..." is translated as "Развернуть..." but the Russian word "развернуть" means "to expand" in English. The right translation would be "Подробнее...". Please, correct the translation on all pop-ups.

BTW you have spent like 5 pages of this thread discussing the look of the new button on the toaster popups. Let me just say that the reason the button looks like it looks is that it allows us to drive more traffic to our website. Please respect this decision. I personally would like to see more relevant content on the landing pages, but this is an on-going process.

"And new in build 6.0.1273:
- Solved the Firefox crash issue
- A few stability improvements in the sandbox module (e.g. PDF reader support)
- Cosmetic changes in the UI"

Nice! Well Done!
Although I didn't have any crashing issue with Firefox 7 beta 1. But Script Shield also doesn't work in Firefox 7 beta 1. That's OK, because this is just a beta firefox version. (which will land very soon) :)

Now, if you could fix the high CPU issue some (me) are having...
When starting a scan, CPU goes 100% and avastsvc.exe in task manager is the culprit, I think.

Well, page traffic or not, it looks horrid and from my point of view i'll have to disable this ugly thing completelly. Just when you incorporated settings to set the time of popups so i could set it to 5 seconds... Now it's no use when popup looks this ugly. Seriously, simple white text would do it just fine opposed to this yellow button which is just offensive.
And if you think 5 pages are wasted because we are talking about some popup, i can't share the same opinion. I'm a perfectionist and as such i prefer that products are polished, consistent and properly looking and working. Sticking such yellow buttons on top of a beautiful interface looks more like an act of desperation than anything else. But that's just my opinion.

Well, I could change the text - but I am not going to "split" the particular string at the moment. It means that the same change would occur even in the other places where "More details..." is used. Also, I'd need the translation for the reverse ("Fewer details") to make it consistent.

just one thing, the script shield seems indeed to scan properly as I browse in Firefox, but it always ends up re-scanning lastpass.js ... wouldn't mind excluding it but as you know there's no settings for the script shield, and no *.ini file that I can find. And actually may be it's better to get lp scanned each time? yes? no? ... on a side note, does the script shield protect against CSS? thx.

Updated from v6.0.1270 via AvastUI to 6.0.1273.  Ran a Quick Scan after allowing restart.  Everything seems to be fine.  Thanks for the hard work of the Avast team.

Evidently, the <em:maxVersion>*</em:maxVersion> line in C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\WebRep\FF\install.rdf allows WebRep to be compatible with all future versions of Firefox.  At any rate, it's currently working fine with Firefox 6 and several other extensions I have installed. 8)

"Fewer details" >>> "Скрыть подробности"  :)

And if you want some parallelism, you could translate "More details" as "Показать подробности" ("to show details") and "Fewer details" as "Скрыть подробности" ("to hide details").

You can make "Подробнее..." for the buttons in the pop-ups (it is shorter than "Показать подробности" and suits more for a button), and "Показать подробности" and "Скрыть подробности" for the web-site.

PROBLEM:  QUICKEN 2011 and AVAST 6.0.1273

It appears that there is an incompatibility with Avast 6.0.1273 and Quicken 2011.  When attempting to initiate a browser session from within Quicken, the programs (Quicken and the browser,IE8)immediately and abruptly close.

I think I isolated the issue to the Quicken/Browser/Avast interaction.  A browser session opened outside of Quicken while Quicken was still running worked without issues.  Both the browser and Quicken sessions operated "as advertised" when both were opened separately, but were run concurrently.

I did not find any other functionality issues with either of the programs.

I reverted back to Avast 6.0.1203 and both of the programs operated as expected.

Confirmed on Win7 32bit with Sandboxie 3.4.4.2
Stopping Behavior Shield solves this problem.
Adding exclusions "C:\Program Files\Sandboxie\*.exe" does not solve this.

the "more details" button is - as expressed by the Avast team - and yes as obvious as it was when it got introduced a while ago already, just a way to generate more traffic to Avast web site. From a user point of view, it brings absolutely nothing, no info, nothing. It's just a promotion button, period.

and yes, I'm getting the exclamation point too on my wifi tray icon when resuming from sleep mode, but funnily I can still connect normally while the warning is still there. Don't know if that's avast related, only an uninstall of the product could tell. And I have no idea if that's new or not, I just tested the wifi after reading the posts here, I usually connect via ethernet.

I don't get the exclamation point anymore but have the switch to local only.
But I can still launch a browser and it then switches to local & internet.

Seems to be several people with this issue as I posted
What chipset do you have.
Is it just wireless drivers, scratching around here waiting for someone to solve it :)

I have uninstalled Avast for now and have no issues with my wireless!

the "more details" button is - as expressed by the Avast team - and yes as obvious as it was when it got introduced a while ago already, just a way to generate more traffic to Avast web site. From a user point of view, it brings absolutely nothing, no info, nothing. It's just a promotion button, period.
It also shows information about what definitions have been updated.

It would make sense if clicking on an update button would send you to the VPS history page. But then again they'd have to update VPS history page at the same time as the actual definitions, otherwise there would be litle point in doing so. Just pointing users to the www.avast.com doesn't make much sense as that's not "more details" but is more like "just some unrelated info".

I believe it also takes you to Avast "Support" with one click after reaching the Avast website.  Lots of good information at "Support"

I already did,
I installed Sandboxie beta 3.57.08 in both computers in my W7 PC Avast does not register anything on the script shield and in XP sp3 PC Sandboxie does not start.

Anything I can provide? am I the only one who's having this problem? any one else here in my situation?
Confirmed on Win7 32bit with Sandboxie 3.4.4.2
Stopping Behavior Shield solves this problem.
Adding exclusions "C:\Program Files\Sandboxie\*.exe" does not solve this.
Strange, I have absolutely no problem on this pc with sandboxie ;D

possibly a issue here... anytime the system boots up or goes to sleep and comes back i have not internet access till i open a browser and after a few seconds the page will load and the yellow exclamation goes away over the wireless bars and i have internet but until i do this i can not update a program or similar. this is on 2 different systems one laptop one desktop both are wireless. with avast uninstalled or the previous version it works just fine

still same issue with this new version....
Same here, not even Avast can connect for a while.

How long is your Windows boot time?

By delaying certain non-essential programs I can get to the internet faster on my netbook connected through a wireless connection.  On my desktops I have not noticed any internet connection delay issues.

You might want to search out some "start-up" optimization software.  I use it and it helps to speed up my start-ups. :)

Okay you got a point for the definition details... this said you ever had a look at the "wow that was close" page when testing an EICAR file? ... I mean no matter what the blocked threat is, you won't get any details about it, but just a "lucky you you got Avast up and running" sort of message. Ok we've been through this discussion long ago already, main thing for me is threats get blocked... If you could just tell me how useful this is, I'd be glad:

New behavior shield (6.0.1270/1273) crashes Tencent Messenger (http://im.qq.com/tm/), an IM software similar to Tencent QQ which is widely used in China.

TM crashes seconds after I login. But if I disable the behavior shield before I start TM, it works fine, even if I re-enable the shield while it's still running.

My OS is Vista SP2, and I don't have other security tools running.

Once I open it, I try to sign in, it takes sometimes saying 'Signing in' and then the window disappears together with the tray icon.

It would be great if you guys can do something about it. :)

yep actually I didn't look, as the detail view didn't show anything but the full list of rules, ie not one in particular. But now that I do look in the activity log, at the exact time when I took the screen shot, it seems to be FreeDownloadManager. How come the popup doesn't tell? thx.

The full FDM 'consults' with servers for 'opinions' as well, at least the full version does.
It may be that it does a compare of what has been downloaded with the data base.

While the 6.0.11xx version worked perfectly well with Windows 2000, it appears that versions 6.0.1270/73 have lost something along the way...
Indeed, I tried the update and now, at the start of the application, I get an error message (in french): "the point of entry of procedure gestaddrinfo is not found in the dynamic link library WS2_32.dll" and, of course, the application does not work.
That has happened?
Do you have a solution?
Thank you in advance.

It's better than the old "More info" button but still looks ugly and out of context. Just doesn't feel right. Can't this be done properly so it looks consistent with the rest of the GUI ? Plz!?

If you ask me a simple "click this popup for more info" on the bottom of the popup with white font would do it. Same size and font type as the rest of the popup, not thiss big ass thing.
I like it as it is ;D

+1 :D ;)

I hate the current More Info button. It would be better if its something like crystal blue type as it is in GUI.

Are there many here that have the avast icon animated in the tray?. With this new script shield ,its getting ridiculous and constantly rotating at loads of sites/web pages. Is this going to be the norm or is there a bug?.
This is just one page where the script shield continually scans.Surely this isnt right?

It's better than the old "More info" button but still looks ugly and out of context. Just doesn't feel right. Can't this be done properly so it looks consistent with the rest of the GUI ? Plz!?

If you ask me a simple "click this popup for more info" on the bottom of the popup with white font would do it. Same size and font type as the rest of the popup, not thiss big ass thing.
I like it as it is ;D

+1 :D ;)

I hate the current More Info button. It would be better if its something like crystal blue type as it is in GUI.
It really looking ugly and making notification too ugly too :(

How is the color of a button important?  Ik also like the link to the website for extra info.
Great that now you can see if some banking virus that you read about is adressed or not.
What i don't like is that my Win XP laptop is taking a huge amount of time to boot now.
The desktop appears but when i place the mousepointer on the windows toolbar it turns into an hourglass until the avast icon appears. This takes nearly 2 minutes.
Also when files (jpg) are sent to me via MSN Messenger i get the message 'virusscan failed'.

Script shield is going mad at http://www.bbc.co.uk/
Continual scanning ,c AIS and firefox6
Switching it off for now.

After more messing ,it seems that admuncher and avast script shield is causing this.If I disable admuncher filtering then exit admuncher completely and restart firefox ,the script shield doesn't ,continually scan and the clock hands (previous post) rotate. It seems to be happening on certain webpages for some reason.Anyone else using admuncher can confirm?

I am NOT using admuncher, but nonetheless I have the same behavior on this page which belongs to one of the most important newspapers in Mexico:

http://www.excelsior.com.mx/

From the moment I open this site, avast´s Script Shield starts analyzing and will NOT stop until i close the site.

Note: This ONLY happens when using Firefox 6.0  (even in SAFE mode with ALL the add-ons disabled!) and NOT IExplorer 9 which works fine. Also using windows 7 64 bit and avast PRO 6.0.1273

Something like that! Before I log on, there is no internet connection. :-X

In connection wirt the new pop-up "more info..." topic. A "more info..." link would be good for this windows as well.

If I miss to click the pop-up window, or just get information manually about the a virus database file.

Hi,
we tried the scenario however IE8 opened correctly from the Quicken 2011. Could you provide more details about the scenario and about your OS ?

thank you
Lukas.

Lukas.

I am running the following.  Each of the software items have the most recent updates and or most recent service packs.

Windows XP Home Edition
ZoneAlarm Free (Version 9.2.106.0)
Iolo System Mechanic System Guard with Iolo System Mechanic 10.5.4 and tuneup definitions 3.0.97.0)
(System Mechanic is NOT System Mechanic Pro, the version with anti-virus.  It is the version without anti-virus.  Avast is my anti-virus software.)
Roboform 7.4.2
Diskeeper 2011 Professional Build 15.0.956.0

Hardware is:
Intel Pentium 4 2.60Ghz hyper-threaded processor
4 gigs of ram
Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 Video Card

I am also using a Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse if that makes any difference.

I did some more testing with my configuration.  I think the problem may be tied to Iolo System Mechanic System Guard.  I disabled System Guard from the Task Bar and still experienced an abrupt shutdown of Quicken when attempting to open the browser within Quicken.  I then disabled System Guard from within the Iolo System Mechanic Tools section and rebooted the computer.  After a reboot there WAS NO ABRUPT SHUTDOWN  System Guard monitors changes to files and provides alerts.  There is also a Browser Guard within the System Guard which monitors changes to the browser.  The Avast shields may already be providing those protections.  If that is the case, I will leave the System Guard disabled.  Just let me know.

I use Firefox 6.0.1 as my main browser, but I think Quicken is using Internet Explorer (8 in my case) when the browser is called within the program.  If you are familiar with Quicken, I am attempting to open a browser session from within the "My Web Links" within Quicken.  (I am running Quicken 2011 Home and Business.)

As I noted originally, the problem seems to be tied to Avast Free 6.0.1273 and Quicken and now Iolo System Mechanic.  It is also isolated to browser calls from within Quicken.  I can run Quicken and a browser session concurrently with no issues when both are opened from the desktop.

I did not experience the above issues with 6.0.1203; only with 6.0.1273.

I'm not saying it cannot be the case for some configurations, but my computers certainly do have a network connection before anybody logs on (as shown e.g. by the fact that I can reach them from the outside using Remote Desktop, without having been logged on locally first).

AvastSvc.exe runs under the System account, as does avast.setup.  They are running before a user logs on, starting when Windows boots up.  That's how it can update before user login, and is also why Avast can update the program itself using the internal updater with a limited user logged.

AvastUI.exe on the other hand runs under the User account of the logged in user.

This version still has not solved the problem where if you run a manual program update through maintainence the side bar will be disabled, opening gadgets will bring the bar back again so its just a small bug.
Everything else is working fine though and iv also noticed that this version has improved on the slow booting that came with 1273  :)

My comment is not directly related to the current beta, but since there are here posts about the tray notifications, I'd like to post anyway.

First, about connecting to internet before a user log in. My system is not capable of being connected to the internet if a user is not logged in, so under such configuration, the "SYSTEM" user is not able to update either. This is just a possible example of the situation described by gdiloren. (I don't know if it is the same exact situation though).

I don't track down every database update against tray notifications, so I can't confirm (or not) if there is a problem as described by gdiloren.

But I indeed know there are some "glitches" related to the tray icon and tray notifications (not specifically related to the current beta).

For example, let's assume the following situation (which I have experienced personally several times):

1_ there is a *program* update available;
2_ while Avast performs one of its automatic checks for available updates, it founds (during that specific update check) both a *program* update and a *database* update;
3_ a *program* update tray notification is displayed, but a *database* update tray notification is not displayed;
4_ I decide not to update the *program* yet (so no click on "update now" is performed);
5_ reviewing the consequences of this specific "automatic check for available updates", the *program* was not updated (which is fine, according to my choice), but the database was indeed updated, even when Avast didn't display any tray notification about it.

I'm happy with the database being updated even when I decided not to update the program yet, but there was no tray notification about it.

Another different glitch: the settings -> status bar -> "virus definitions version" is checked but not working (this one was tested using "manual" updates during several days).

Apologies if this is considered too much an OT.

Hello,

I'm not sure about how this new feature will work with my default browser: Firefox 6.1

If I disable the "scanning of all processes", will the Firefox's plugin-container.exe (a separate browser's process) be still monitored by the Web Shield?

Over-the-top upgrade to 1273 worked flawlessly.  Then manual internal upgrade (using the Maintenance tab of the UI) to 1279 also worked flawlessly.  All systems seem to be working smoothly (Windows 7 SP1, 64 bit, FF 6.01, IE8, standard user account).  Script shield works on FF and IE, not on Chrome 13 (as Vlk indicated, that is not in this release).

I haven't done any scientific testing, but it feels like script scanning slows the browser down.  If I turn Script Shield off (by pressing the Stop button in the UI), FF seems "snappier".  I expect this is the price to pay for the extra protection (and I noticed that 1279 tries to reduce this by using a script cache to reduce redundant scans).  But I am wondering if the folks at Avast have done rigorous tests on the impact of the script scanning.  With all the emphasis these days on the speed of javascript processing, will users turn off this valuable feature, or (worse yet) use a competitor's product (that doesn't have it)?

All in all, a great product, regardless of price.  And this forum is wonderful - Vlk and the team do a wonderful job of helping the users out and responding to their questions, concerns and suggestions.  Very much appreciated!

There is one new untranslated option in Web Shield General Options in the Russian version (see the attached screenshot). What does this option mean? Could I suggest how to translate it into Russian or you just forgot to replace it with your own translation?

Well, I'd ask again - are you sure the update happened after you logged on?
The virus definitions may be updated even if nobody is logged on (yet) - in which case the popup is not shown (cause there's nobody to show it to at the moment).
Well, Igor, you're the specialist, I'd say my computer is turned off and when I put it on, only way to get an internet connection is after log on, but you are the specialist. Anyway, this is a minor problem. It's true that if I leave my pc open, I have normal updates pop-up happenning. ::)

My Internet connection is never turned off so I never have to log on.

Rolled by system back (Rollback Rx) before installing betas and FF is loading pages perfectly again.  (CPU and fan seem to running less again too.)

Scratch that-- FF just did that weird thing of not loading images correctly and the current version of avast! is running.  It started with the update but I'm back before that now so I'm not sure what happened.

This version still has not solved the problem where if you run a manual program update through maintainence the side bar will be disabled, opening gadgets will bring the bar back again so its just a small bug.
Everything else is working fine though and iv also noticed that this version has improved on the slow booting that came with 1273  :)
I never had this problem on any version of AVAST 8)
Are you using the side bar on win 7 64 bit ?
Yes, of course! :)
edit: Upgrade to 1279  all is ok, except for the update or upgrade notification popups I haven't seen since 2-3 days. I have to put my pc OFF so I go to work and put it ON everymorning around 9 AM. ???
Also, I have to +1 Tech upon slower browsing experience with 1279. I tested with Chrome, web pages start loading fast then it takes ages to complete the process of loading.

Some of my pages load a bit slow however I have three programs (a bit paranoid on this eh ;D) running that check scripts so I am happy :) that they appear to be doing their job.

From this one can deduce that you do not have the Windows Screen Saver "on resume, display logon screen" box checked.

Well the new web shield scans 'all' http traffic no matter what might have originated that traffic. In the previous avast versions only well know browser were supported (to ensure compatibility I assume), so anything else that initiated an http connection wouldn't have been scanned.

So essentially this option reverts to how the web shield used to work with only supported browsers.

It means that you are back on the old version with this setting regarding the web shield, where the web shield did only protect/scan the browsers.

Edit: I'm too late...

Hi DavidR,

I've asked this before but I guess my question probably got lost between all the other users' posts:

if I tick "Scan traffic from well-known browser processes only", will the traffic generated by Firefox's plugin-container.exe (a separate browser's process) be still scanned by the Web Shield?

Thanks,

I don't believe this originates any connections as it says on the tin, it is the plug-in container, to ensure if a plug-in crashed it didn't take down the browser.

Quote
If a plugin crashes or freezes, it will not affect the rest of Firefox. You will be able to reload the page to restart the plugin and try again.

Even if it does then checking the "Scan traffic from well-known browser processes only" option would exclude that as A) it isn't a browser and B) certainly not well known.

So I guess it can be considered a "well-known browser process"...
Anyway, it does generate connections using port 80 (and port 443) - because Online Armor asked for permission.

It also may use additional ports depending on the plugins installed (e.g. 844 and 1935 if you have the Flash Player, but obviously this is not http traffic).

There already is some cloud based features in avast if you enable the comunity feature but i dont think avast will ever go full cloud like panda cloud for instance, at least i hope they dont.

Uncheck this option and remove any rule/permission you may have in OA and see it you get any further permission pop-ups for it (http connections only).

It also may use additional ports depending on the plugins installed (e.g. 844 and 1935 if you have the Flash Player, but obviously this is not http traffic).

No, on the contrary it isn't a known browser, if you uncheck the option you talked about, then I believe its http traffic 'won't be scanned.'

Thank you DavidR and Asyn for your explanations.

If Avast hasn't got a ready translation into Russian for "Scan traffic from well-known browser processes only", I can suggest one: "Сканировать только веб-трафик через известные браузеры". This is not a word-to-word translation (in back-translation it means: "Scan web-traffic from well-known browsers only") but it would be enough compact and understandable.

Really?  ???

At the moment I don't have the latest beta installed because I'm using my father's PC so I cannot see if the http traffic generated by plugin-container.exe  is being scanned.

Perhaps at this point someone of the Avast! Team could help clarifying this:

if I tick "Scan traffic from well-known browser processes only", will the traffic generated by Firefox's plugin-container.exe (a separate browser's process) be still scanned by the Web Shield?

I think that the 'Browser Processes' refers to the browser executable file (which is a process in task manager) rather than other processes within the browser.

Top right under the Day and I haven't customised anything and the clock is working for me. Do any of you have bbcimg.co.uk blocked (noscript, etc.) as that is where the clock is coming from. Perhaps it might be a geo-blocking thing for those who can't see it at all.

I checked the option "scan traffic from well-known browsers processes only" then I visited some flash games sites which will view games in swf which is contained in the firefox's plugin-container process. In the web shield activity last page scanned I see that it scanned the swf.
This a simple test and still need confirmation that plugin-container process is treated by avast as a well-known browser.

You don't have to disable it to keep it from slowing down your system.

I have it set for real-time scanning and it uses about 70 MB of memory on a x64 system.  It will be less on a x32 system.

If you are concerned about it using CPU power and slowing down your system, then just go into Windows Defender-+------Tools and unclick the real-time scan button..  Then set it to run a scheduled Quick Scan once a week, preferably when your computer is on but you are not using it.  It runs fairly quickly.   Also, it will use less memory when the real-time scanning is turned off.

It has occasionally found stuff that avast! has missed.

Today, Avast must have updated at the end of the booting process (3 minutes) because I finally got an update pop-up notification. But some programs like SAS was not in the tray and the icon for system sound was saying it was not functionning although I had sound. After reboot all normal. I've got an HP pc and sometimes it runs an HP program in the background... ???
EDIT sat 03 Sept 11. For a second day in a row, all seems back to normal with my updates pop-up notifications, seems the problem is solved! :D

But some programs like SAS was not in the tray....After reboot all normal.

I had the same situation on both of my x64s but not on my x32.

I am using a start-up optimize program that delays the start of the some programs if I choose.  I am guessing the reason that SAS did not show up on the first reboot had to do with a loading conflict between SAS and the completion of the avast! update.

I just a ran a couple of java exploits with only the script shield enabled.  Avast Pro detected and blocked one of them.  This was done in Windows 7 64 with Firefox 7 Beta.

This has really nothing to do with this new beta release, it is a virus and worms forum issue and is where it should be, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=4.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=4.0) as a New Topic.

I'm not even sure if it should be there either unless you consider it a bad detection. If so then that is where it should be and blanking out part of the information in the alert window doesn't help us to help you.

At the time I ran in it VM Ware.  I did not realize the beta had already been completed.  This was only to should that the script shield is working properly in Windows 7 64 bit.

I'm running this on Windows 7 Pro x64, and things are working - however, Windows reports "avast! Antivirus reports that it is turned off".

Is this normal with betas, or is avast! not reporting its status to Windows properly?

I even hit the "Turn on now" button, and nothing happened.

Try repair AVAST in the Uninstall program in Control Panel. If that don't work, uninstall in safemode, reboot then reinstall cleanly the product. 8)

I don't know. There is something with the updating process and maintenance. I stayed online for more than 18 hours today, got my usual 2 VPF today but on my latest manual check (21h30) after the log on 'cause I was in the garden no update could initialize (last checkecked 18h30). Why??? Mystery! ??? I just booted and now everything is working fine. Anyway, I won't be paranoid checking if the update process checks VPS at intervals or not, to me this is a bug. :o

It also appears to be a bit lower in Beta 3 as opposed to Beta 2.

However, the number of scans still appears reasonable.

Hm...for me it is considerably lower...before when I surf the net, I can get up to 20 000 scanned scripts but now it fall around 2000 (Just an example it is not exact)

Are you comparing comparable websites over a comparable time period?

I run several real-time scanning programs and two of them AIS and product x are the only two that report scanned scripts.  I reset the counter on product x every night and of course the history numbers in AIS can be viewed for the day's activity.   With Beta 2 AIS was generating about 15% - 20% more scanned items in their history graph than product x.  Now AIS is showing about 5% more items scanned over a specific period of time.  Of course that could be due to my surfing locations though I rarely change them much from day to day.

I don't seem to have any problems with the latest beta apart from the ugly popups that i didn't like from the beginning... Seems stable enough. I just hope Opera support for Script Shield will be added soon (if possible).

Hmm, yeah, even i wish for it. But then i wonder if this setting will work.

- Web Shield: scanning of all processes can now be disabled in shield's Expert Settings

Real-time Shields with "Shield Logs" on the traffic graph GUI.

Slow on the uptake here :-[ but I just noticed the following.  Using FF 7.0B3

The graphs for the Real-time Shields are showing activity however the "Shield Logs" (to the right of "Show Traffic History" are empty.

Would it be possible to change the color from white to black of the numbers in the yellow square in the graphs (statistics). I mean, white on red ok, but white on pale yellow, even a "sniper" can't see it. Please change it now!!! :D

Opera is a seriously good web browser.  It is very pleasant to use and has a long record of exceptionally few security issues.  The remark about the modest user base is accepted but the corollary of that is that Opera is rarely a target for exploits.

Opera Software ASA always responds promptly to those issues which very occasionally arise.

In all the nearly ten years that I have used Opera, I have never (yet) suffered a single security issue or incident with Opera.

Naturally, I expect to be 'tail end Charlie' with browser specific improvements from Avast but Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro 7.5.1 works extremely well with Avast and so I now have Web Control as an additional layer of defence.  I am not complacent but neither do I lose any sleep.

That is because nothing has been found (presumably) only detections (as is indicated by the column headings in the display) it doesn't record OK files in the same way other shield log don't.

It's better than the old "More info" button but still looks ugly and out of context. Just doesn't feel right. Can't this be done properly so it looks consistent with the rest of the GUI ? Plz!?

If you ask me a simple "click this popup for more info" on the bottom of the popup with white font would do it. Same size and font type as the rest of the popup, not thiss big ass thing.

i agree with this

I wouldn't mind seeing a "?" box under the Avast in the grey area.

If that is the case and it makes sense that you are correct then the name of these log links in the GUI should be changed "XXX Threats Detected Log". :)   Just saying.

I believe that there is another confusing word usage in the Real-Time Shield area.

When you click on "Show Traffic History" --- "Time Period" ------ "Today" for a Real-Time Shield count of items scanned, the count of items scanned it not for "Today" but for the last 24 hours.  So the count has to be corrected to reflect "Today" or the wording changed to say "Last 24 Hours"

At least in America when people say "Today" they are referring to a Calendar date which starts at 00:01 (12:01 AM) and not the last 24 hours.

ISTM that it would best to change all the count periods to commence at 00:01 on the computer's clock and leave the wording alone.

JMO :)

Well the log link has to pretty clear, by just shows Shield log as this name is carried through all shields.

So I feel avast are right to try and maintain a consistency through all shields, as it also makes it easier in the translation consistency and also keeps the word count down for translations in the UI.

Sorry but the Log Link is not clear at all according to what you said it shows. You said it shows "only detections" yet the link says "Shield Logs"

Shield Logs in American means complete shield logs whether there is a "detection" or not.  If in fact you are correct that the "Shield Logs" show only detections then the link should say "Shield Log Detections"   There is no translation problem here in adding one word to all the Shield Log links.

Then again maybe you are incorrect and the term "Shield Log" is supposed to do what it says; i.e show all "Scanned Scripts".

Either way something needs to be fixed, IMO 8)

Reboot if that doesn't resolve it - Try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Vista, win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair. This has in the past resolved this out of sync issue between reported and actual VPS version.
