Title: Avast has slowed entire computer
Post by: gwpaul on September 09, 2011, 02:13:03 PM
I installed the internet security 6.0 last night and the entire system has slowed down, in particular internet browsing.  What used to take milliseconds now takes 3-4 seconds.

I uninstalled my last security software, restarted, then installed the new avast, so no conflict there.

I am on XP, windows seems to have reset some of the security settings, I am changing them as they appear.

Any suggestions on what settings need tweaking?

Gary

Welcome to the forum, :)
Which Anti Virus Program was on your system before you installed avast! ???
How Did you remove it ???
Instructions for totally removing 3rd Party AV programs can be found here (https://support.avast.com/index.php?languageid=1&group=eng&_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=574).

Bob

Thank you for your quick reply, I read the instructions on the link you provided and that was the method that I had used to uninstall Avira. I did receive the message that all had been uninstalled.

Any suggestions?

Gary

You mentioned changing settings. Can you be more specific ???

@ Gary,
It would also help to know more about your system. How much Ram etc.
What other security programs are installed and/ or running on your system ???

In internet explorer, I was receiving a security warning about mixed content (http&https), I changed that setting.

System is Windows XP, 4 gig of ram.  No other security software on the machine.

One thought I had was in that minute that I did not have a security package installed, windows might have restored some of its security settings.  I lowered all the settings, still very sluggish.

Firefox 6 is very slow...too slow to live with.

The only difference from yesterday to today is the addition of Avast.  Yesterday, system ran at acceptable speeds.

Again, thank you for your help.

Gary,
To eliminate any possibility of a conflict, please try the following:

1. You've already downloaded avast! Just make sure you know where it is when it's time to re-install it.

02. Download the REMOVAL TOOL for your current Anti Virus Program by following the Guide offered here:
How do I remove old third-party antivirus software before installing avast!?
       https://support.avast.com/index.php?languageid=1&group=eng&_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=574 (https://support.avast.com/index.php?languageid=1&group=eng&_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=574)

02a. Download the removal tool for avast! Antivirus : http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear6.exe (http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear6.exe))

03. Once these  programs are saved to your computer in a folder that you can locate or,
to the desktop and, you can easily identify these files, DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET

04. Re-run the removal tool for your old AV program.

05. Reboot your system.

06. Uninstall avast! using the Add/Remove function in the Control Panel - Reboot

07. Run the removal tool for avast saved in step #2a

08. When the tool finishes running, again Reboot your system.

09. Install avast! by running the program downloaded in step #1

10. Shut down your system -- Reconnect to the internet -- Start your computer.

Once these steps are done, we know you have a clean installation of avast! without any conflicts
from your previous AV.
Hopefully you'll now also have a well running operating system.

Please post back and report.
Thanks.

I did not go through the re-install of the program because the way you described it was the way that I had originally installed, so I have a clean install.  I also was concerned that because I am the 30 trial it might not re-install and the thought of searching for anti-virus software without protection sent shivers up my spine.

I reset the setting to default and that helped some, but not enough.

The last AV that I had purchased was ESET, and I removed that according to the methods recommended. I wanted a smaller footprint so I tried Avira, however I was not happy with it.  Again, this was removed first then the install of Avast.

Both previous packages did not slow the computer down like avast has.

Any other suggestions before I go off to find its replacement?

Thank you for your help.

Hello Gary,
Since this is your computer, I can only give you advice.
You have to make the final decision whether to follow them or not.
At this point, I'm also not sure if there aren't also remnants from your previous
install of Avira remaining in the registry.
I've used avast! since 2003 and chose it because it was and still is light on system resources.

System is Windows XP....

Which SP..??

Bob

I use Registry Mechanic to regularly clean the registry.  And I did uninstall Avira the way you had recommended, so I did not see the benefit of the re-do.

One of the reasons I chose to try Avast is exactly that reason, a small drain on the system, and it shows about 30k usage, but the slow down is not livable.

Asyn

SP3

Thank you both for your help. I really dont want to go through the process of reading all the reviews and trying a new one, but the lag is huge.

Avast is the lightest av on the market afaik and iv tested quite a few, you might find that registry mechanic has removed something required from your registry  ??? stick to ccleaners registry cleaning.
Anyway a clean install of avast should help you, uninstall avast normally then reboot into safe mode and run the removal tool then boot back into normal mode and run ccleaner then reinstall avast, register your copy then reboot your system.

gwpaul,

I suggest MSE.  http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx

I hope it works for you. :)

I hope that someday you will give avast another try.  It's very good and light.

IMHO, MSE is lighter than avast.

MSE is also know as Security Essentials. ;)

I agree with YoKenny but I don't recommend you using registry cleaners through... :(

Never had a problem with CCleaner removing my VLC icon even with its registry cleaner.

Do you have the latest versions of CC and VLC ? maybe try reinstalling VLC because the only reason i can think of why Ccleaner would do that was if there was a vlc reg key missing so it's maybe cleaned up the empty parent  ??? doesn't happen here so thats all i can tell you.

YoKenny,

Bob & craigb gave excellent advice to gwpaul, but he's not willing to follow though with it. ::)

So, the best thing to do is send him on his merry way with MSE, it's an excellent antivirus and light.

I don't know where you get the light from, same cupboard you found ZA is the best firewall no doubt. But there are plenty of forum members who have switched from MSE to avast and one of the first things they have mentioned is how much more responsive their system is.

I was hooked up to MSE when I got my computer back from the guy that fixed it...it never felt 'right' to me, I never felt completely secure, I'm glad I came back to Avast. It sure  hasn't slowed me down.

Avast! and MSE are both light, but MSE feels slightly lighter.

MSE is the better av, but I give the crown to avast! for it's better updating mechanism.

Hope all of you are having fun discussing off topic crap.
Advice was given. It's up to the person asking for advice to either follow it or
make other decisions.
@rdmaloyjr,
Why are you recommending other MSE on the Avast Support forum ???
A little research would tell you that avast! is better than MSE, updates more often and
is lighter on resources.

Bob,

I was recommending avast!.

Read the whole thread.

When gwpaul wouldn't heed craigb & your advice, I sent him off with MSE.

Actually, when i installed avast i would say that the computer was running faster(joking).
It didn't slow down my computer in any way,by no means!
And admittedly i don't have the best computer, dual core etc .

It could something else i guess.
Btw MSE's scan is really slow,i once tested it.Imagine that i went to see harry potter and after the movie it was still scanning. ;D

Just to add my 2 cents. All the systems at my workplace are on MSE, it isn't just the scan that is slow, updating the definitions takes forever. The detection rate is lower than avast!, it is nowhere near as configurable as avast! and it's heavier on the resources. I am at work atm, i have clicked on update 5 minutes ago and this is where we are at:

(http://www.shrani.si/t/1f/Zq/4RijGaEc/brez-naslova.jpg) (http://www.shrani.si/?1f/Zq/4RijGaEc/brez-naslova.png)

Effin' MSE, starting to really hate it...

EDIT: Finished, only took a little under 10 minutes to update...  ::)

MSE is "sux and it stinks!" and it should be trash in the bin, and it shouldn't be included in any OS platform in the first place

In spite of knowing I had already gone through a clean install, I uninstalled, went through the recommended removal procedures of old snit-virus (there was no evidence of the last package on the computer), and a new clean install of avast, it is still slowest I have ever encountered.

Unless someone has something we have not covered, it looks like I will have to move on.  Waiting 3-4 seconds for a web site to appear is not acceptable.  (It was milliseconds before the install and I have an older laptop with slower processor and less ram that is faster on same web pages)

Thank you for all of your replies and help
