Title: OK to run windows xp prof svc pk 3 firewall with avast free 6?
Post by: scarletmagnolias on September 10, 2011, 05:13:40 AM
My parents gave me a pc yesterday (it's an older one...) and every time i boot up, a popup tells me that "Your computer may be at risk. No firewall is turned on. Click here to correct...". Now, I have heard that you should not have two different antivirus programs installed/running at the same time. Does this include these instances? I know that there is no firewall with the free Avast software, but I don't want to take any chances of messing something up by turning on the firewall. I have dealt with computers that were so horribly infected that they would literally freeze up for an hour waiting just to connect to the internet and display the homepage, and I really don't want to see another one bite the dust!

(Also, if anyone has advice about seeing more than one of the same .exe file/process running, and they are located in different folders... I understand that some of these may be malicious "copycats". How do I tell the difference?)

Thank you to anyone that can help this computer novice learn a few things!

The firewall is completely separate from Avast and it should be turned on. Even the XP firewall is better than none at all.
