Title: Avast + SSL => Problem still.
Post by: khalis on September 13, 2011, 01:33:50 PM
Hello everyone  :)

Just for let you know all, that Avast doesn't works as well with the SSL.
I gonna explain you. With the newsgroup, I use 50 simultaneity connexions. So Avast, It detects that like an intrusion, then infact no. I've tried to find out a solution or to make a rules. Nothing in result.

So I've tested without Avast and with another antivirus, then I did not have the problem again.

Best regards,
Khalis.

It isn't detected as an intrusion, just that it exceeds the maximum concurrent connections, so avast effectively can't get a look in.

Presumably this NNTP connection doesn't require SSL ?
Even so it would contribute to the concurrent total of connections, essentially this isn't an SSL thing but cumulative connections.

You can increase this Concurrent Connections maximum, this used to work in earlier versions of avast, I have modified the locations and ini file to reflect the latest version
- Concurrent Connections Error: You could modify the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\EmailShield.ini (XP) or C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\EmailShield.ini (Vista, Win7) file using notepad. Find the [EmailScanner] section and insert a new line after the section heading, and enter this MaxConnections=75 (if that line exists you can change the value to 75). Save the changes, the avast self-defence will ask if it is OK answer yes.
[EmailScanner]
MaxConnections=75

I believe the default concurrent connection limit may be as low as 20 (for mail & news together). This limit exists not to save resources, but to prevent connection looping in strange configurations, so the user can increase it without worry to, for instance, 75. The value 0 disables the limit.

I'm under Windows 7 64.
I did not find the file "EmailShield.ini" on "C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\EmailShield.ini".

Khalis.

I don't know if that area would be hidden so you would have to change your Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options, to show hidden files and folders. Though, that said I suppose you wouldn't have been able to see the folder.

Try opening the avast Mail Shield, Expert Settings and change one of the settings, this might then generate the emailshield.txt file. Try changing this rather benign settings in the Mail Heuristics, change the value in the 'Check white-spaces sequences in name of attachment,' just add 1 to that total ans OK your way out.

Oh yes my files aren't on the hidden mode.

Thanks for the kind screen shot.
I'll watch out.

You're welcome, just try that modification and see if it created the emailshield.txt file and you can them make your increase to the concurrent connections.

Well that isn't really fixing the problem, just shooting the messenger by bypassing it and not scanning the NNTP content.

Well unless you are happy for the NNTP traffic not to be scanned for possible infection. So yes I would go for the modification of the maximum concurrent connections.

Sorry I can't read the imageshack.us image, too small and won't allow it to be expanded.

Many people have problems viewing imageshack.us images as it blocks domains that aren't registered.

That's the point for many, including me this doesn't work and you left with a small image (the one on the site can't be increased), which can't be read. The imageshack.us image hosting is proving to be a pain in the rear.

You didn't place the line within the [EmailScanner] section as per the instructions which is why it doesn't work.

Quote from: DavidR
Find the [EmailScanner] section and insert a new line after the section heading, and enter this MaxConnections=75 (if that line exists you can change the value to 75). Save the changes, the avast self-defence will ask if it is OK answer yes.

[EmailScanner]
MaxConnections=75

You placed it after the [Common] section at the bottom of the file, not in the [EmailScanner] section.

You can try increasing the max number again, but I fear that this niozefire.exe is just going to gobble them up also. I don't know if there is any connection limiting option in that program ?

Post by: khalis on September 22, 2011, 12:39:21 PM
Hello DavidR,

I'll try it, why not.
This program is a news reader and my usenet account allow me 50 connections. So I've setup 50 on-it.

Without Avast, I don't have the problem. Or just when I disable into the shield, the scan on newsgroups.

I'll try with another newsgroup software to see if It happen the same errors.

Well you can also set the max number of concurrent connections to 0, which isn't actually none but unlimited, but that could well swamp the system which it isn't usually used.

If your usenet account only allows for 50 connections, I would say that limiting your newsreader/aggregator to 50 would be advisable then the max concurrent connections in avast could remain at 75.
