Check your firewall.  With Avast! you connect to the internet via avastsvc.exe, not your browser, and it needs to be allowed by your firewall..

avast free is an antivirus only. It just scans, does not block. Which firewall do you use?

i looked up firewall on the internet. for windows xp i did what it said to do on about.com: ie: control panel, network connections, etc. did what they said to do. but still would not connect to wireless. think i should go to a a computer service locally to troubleshoot. i just don't understand why it once worked and no longer does. thanks for the help and advice.
