Title: Please recommend a laptop for me :D
Post by: Somethngcreative on September 17, 2011, 03:39:13 AM
Hi,

I am looking to buy a new laptop but I am not sure what technical details I should look for. Specifically, I am looking for a laptop that is small enough to fit into my backpack but powerful enough to support my gaming needs (I play America's Army only). My budget is between $800-1200, the cheaper the better lol.

My friend said I should buy an Alienware laptop but I don't know if that's practical, because I don't play that much games so I don't really need a top of the line gaming laptop. I'm planning to use the laptop for casual gaming of America's Army but will be using most of it for my school work and for office work.

Thanks!

I can recommend the one I got recently for $599 at Staples. It's an HP Dv6-6140us model. It comes with a quad core AMD processor with Radeon HD6620G graphics built in and 6 gigs of DDR3-1333 Ram. It will play any current game at medium to high settings. It's really amazing for the price. I looked up America's Army on Can you run it and the laptop passes with flying colors and exceeds the recommended requirements.

I just purchase a Dell 17R Inspiron Laptop with an Intel i5 processor.
This was a floor model which had no operating system but outside of that little
matter was in perfect condition. The price was right at $450.00
I've now had the pleasure of using this computer for the past 3 weeks and can highly recommend it.

Look at your shops. I find alots good laptops there. Like 8 gb ram for about 800-900 $ ? That alot and its with a 6000 series or GTX nvidia of 1 gb ram. Also with a core i7 so its like nothing for that price i can say if you can compare to 2007 computers you will want now a 900 $ computer instead lol.

Or wait 1 month and im sure there will be a core i8 LOL...

A few things I didn't mention about mine, the one I recommended. It plays BluRay discs and even though there is no mention of it anywhere, the optical drive will burn Lightscribe labels if you install the Lightscribe software. The sound is better than most laptops as well. It has 4 speakers and has Beats Audio preinstalled which improves the bass significantly. There is another model, the Dv6-6135us which has a discrete HD 6750M card which can run alone or in Crossfire with the integrated 6620G chip. It's a little more expensive of course and the reviews do not say that it performs that much better

I would never use any system from AMD as they have a good chance of self distruction.

I've used 5 different AMD systems with absolutely no problems. They all have been rock solid and lasted at least 5 years that way. Only one fried it's MB after 6 years and I don't think it had anything to do with AMD since it had a Pentium3 CPU and a Rage Fury video card. The guy in that site seems to be one of those who looks for problems and isn't happy until he finds something. I have never seen those glitches with any ATI/AMD hardware or driver. For gamers, AMD has always packed the most punch for the buck and it still does.

Who cares what does or does not happen in WPF anyway? That's only for developers who are a miniscule part of the computer world. From what I've seen none of the glitches he shows have made it out to the release versions of anything.

I doubt that it would play the games he plays though. Intel graphics are not good at all, even the new 3000 ones that are built into the Sandy Bridge CPU's. My HD6620G chip completely blows Intel out of the water.

Well ATI do offer good graphics for a very low price that you can compare to a NVIDIA that cost like 30-50 $ more and its do the same...

Wow, how could you sell those machines at that price? Also, how did you get so many of them? Did you hijack a truck or a cargo ship? ;D

I was looking at Asus but when I saw the one I have for less than half the price, I jumped on it. ($600 is not a quarter of the retail though, it's closer to half)

Amd / Ati systems is find for budget gamers which is what the OP is looking for.

Actually Dch48 my exact model retail for $2400 here and our dollar is still worth more than yours at the moment, you cant even get the g73 for the price that your saying unless your looking at one of the first released downgraded models. My model that i have blew the mx17 alienware out of the water at the latest benchmarks and that is three time the price.

I went halves with a friend in a container load of them, one off deal that i couldn't pass up.

Typical BS post from you. Yes Kenny, AMD hardware explodes when you turn on your computer.   ::)

Personally i am sticking with AMD, i am not loaded with money and i have nothing against Intel but as Dch48 mentioned, you usually get more bang for the buck with AMD.

Thank you everyone! :) but I think Dch48 has won me over with the Hpdv6 laptop. It has amazing features for a $700+ laptop. ;D

The only reason I don't have an AMD laptop processor right now is because of the bargain I got.
I was looking at AMD very seriously and have never had one explode on me.  :)

Those prices aren't bad, Seems to be a few variations in the models you get there to us though, we dont get the 8Gb and 12Gb versions only the 16Gb.

You did get a great deal on that machine. Nice processor, big screen, very good for everything except the more graphics intensive games which I know you don't play  ;D.
