Title: Avast! Free, Annoyances. Is it time to change?
Post by: avastin on September 18, 2011, 06:32:01 PM
Hi there,

Really, what is going on with Avast! Free?

For the last couple of months, I have experienced an unusual amount of False Positives whit Avast! Free.  :o

First.  It was uphclean.exe, detected as Rootkit.

Second.  It was ch7xxnt5.dll, detected as Rootkit.

Third.  Again, uphclean.exe, detected as Win32: Malware-gen.

Fourth.  Today is, fdc.sys, detected as Rootkit.

This is so Annoying!

Is it time to change for another Antivirus Brand?  ???

Avastin.
Windows XP Pro SP-3
Avast! Free 6, current.

Well... The price of improving detection and increase proactive detection is the false positive.
Hope they achieve a balance.

Not sure why but those filenames look weird. How are you sure they are FP's for real?

Thanks for your comments.

All the files, are legitimate files. I checked them using GEMER Anti-Rootkit and VirusTotal online file scanner. Besides, if the files name are googled you'll find a wealth of information about them.

Avast! Free, is messing around with well known legitimate old files.

What to do?

Such is life.

What to do? Change for MS Security Essentials which has no false positives,,,but malware can switch it off! Which do you prefer?    ;)
