Title: New iAVS update asks for reboot
Post by: Lisandro on November 09, 2004, 04:47:50 PM
Why the new iAVS update (push update) (VPS 446-0) for avast! is related to be a standard update and asks for a reboot?

Why my settings say no blue panel warning the update and when I receive a push update the blue panel appear?

Just a guess: didn't you replace the ashQuick.exe file by the one I sent you? If yes, the installer will spot an unknown file, turn it back to its original state and ask for an restart.

No, it's not. After you get another request to restart, please check the file C:\Windows\wininit.ini (or whatever your Windows folder is) - what's its content?

Hi there

there was an update tonight/morning... and it said it wanted to reboot, but showed something in the news about 4.1.312?  what/why ?
there was an update.  Avast mail service shut down...don't remember file name off hand but after an update it asked want to reboot.  I said no...and something shut down and stopped all scanning and shutdown completely Avast.  Beta version 4.5.512...just updated this afternoon... then one tonight...of what?

here is what wininit.ini says

This seems to be an ordinary program update (there was a new build - 514); program updates always require restart, so that the new files can be actually replaced.

Hi there

so the reboot I should do even it says do you want to reboot now?

isn't Avast capable of waiting until I decide to reboot?
microsoft updates can...other software can..

just wondering...

I can undertsand some what why the stamps in Avast Beta v. 4.5.512 still isn't working and that is probably because of Juno/Netzero (UOL).

Isn't there a way to make it work with these Juno email programs.  They download emails from Juno servers to the computer.  Yes maybe web based ...is what they been working on I guess to help the security/spam/ etc..

Any suggestions...

win 98se, 64meg of ram, Avast Beta 4.5.514 ?, EMC spam filter program between Juno Program.

You don't have to reboot - but the update will not be performed until then. The files are updated during the restart - so until you do that, you are still running the old version. (This is true for program updates only; the updates of the virus database don't require a reboot, of course).

As for Juno - sorry, I don't know anything about it. Try to start a new thread about it, maybe somebody is more experienced.

You can search in the board for the word Juno.
As far I know, it's not a pop3/smtp server provider so, it won't be possible to scan the messages with avast (even the 4.5)  :'(

Of course you have to reboot your system after program update. What is so strange in that ? You can always choose not to restart at that point when avast! asks you, but as Igor said, avast! won't be updated untill reboot is performed. Exactly same situation with any other software or Windows updates. You think that Windows will be updated if you don't restart your computer or delay restarting it ? No, nothing will be updated untill you perform reboot. It's completely understandable. Why would anyone need to restart his system if it doesn't any good ?

Don't worry, just restart when asked and that's it. After iAvs updates, restart is not required any more... as far as I'm aware...

Cheers !

Hi there
yes I understand that files don't upgrade either in Avast and Microsoft until I tell that answer to reboot.
Again , the thing is I was online and it was downloading updates for Avast in the afternoon yesterday -11/11/04 and during the night.  The afternoon update of whatever went well.  DOn't recall what it was.  But later that evening it updated and it was 4.5.514 I think from the afternoon one.  It is CST (central time) here. Whatever updated the 2nd time at night and I answered NO" to , not to reboot.   Avast just shut down!  and I think the first thing to shut down was the email server program.  Then the rest shutdown itself.  The icons went away and there I was like I don't think that is suppose to happen.  Avast for the first time just shut down completely.  Wasn't running.  So, what was that about?  Just because I said 'no' do not reboot after that update?

yes, it is a bummer about Juno.  It isn't a pop3 server.  It uses pop actually if using Outlook Explorer if Juno and Netzero would allow it again (UOL).  In fact the pop info that Juno gives is pop.juno.com, and smtp is smtp.juno.com, and netzero is pop.netzero.com, and smtp.netzero.com
