Title: 4.5 beta install
Post by: Mal76 on November 09, 2004, 09:02:27 PM
Hello All,
This evening I attempted the installation of Avast 4.5 beta.
I did this by right clicking the link and save as, to avast setup folder,
this appeared to go ok. I then installed the program which I also thought
   went ok.
However on restarting the comp. as requested by the install. I then found
   my computer in big trouble.
System tray icons missing. no network connection.attempt to do anything
   and system froze.
I tried system restore in Safe mode to a point just before download but still
same. Also tried to last good configuration still same.
I only had one more restore point from yesterday, and using this in Safe
mode brought comp back to life.
Computer had been working ok before.
I have Windows xp home with SP2.
Asus A7N8x mobo. AMD 1800xp cpu.
I know the release version of 4.5 is due later this week, so I am a little
concerned, as to what I may have done wrong to have caused such a big
   problem.

Thanks for any advice you may help me with.
                                   Mal.

Do you have some kind of firewall installed? What is your network connection?

I'm just wondering if it could be caused by the new network protection... would it help if you uninstalled (or didn't install, if uninstalled already) the Network Shield and Internet Mail providers?

Hello Igor and duke,
I  have Sygate free edition firewall installed.
 Network connection is ADSL 512.
I cannot say about network shield or internet mail providers as I could not do anything, system froze. and having got comp back working, I thought iI would seek advice first.
Duke, I tried repair in Avast, but it said could not connect to server, so just had to get out of this situation.
I think when I go into Menu and look at update programme it would attempt
to upgrade if I let it as if this beta upgrade is still downloaded.
Comp is working ok at the moment, but thinking ahead to the new version..
Thanks for your replies so far,     Mal.

Check your firewall logs, sygate may be blocking avast.

Hi again,
I should have made clear that having used  system restore I am back on avast 4.1.512.

Duke,
Avast was not blocked by sygate but my isp was.
But what about freezing and missing icons in sys tray.
Also when the install of 4.5 was done it was updated to the latest beta version, so I would have thought internet connection was ok then.

I just tried repair of avast and this put me straight back into trouble so had to use system restore in safe mode. Frozen again.
Should I uninstall avast and start again?

Do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer?
Did you try to repair your installation through Control Panel?

Hello technical,
thanks for your reply, if you see my last post I did try repair through control panel, which crashed my comp again so had to restore.
No I do not have any other Anti Virus programme installed.
Should I uninstall and start again?

Please, try to reinstall without the two providers I mentioned (Network Shield and Internet Mail). After it's done and you see that the computer is running correctly, you may try to add the providers to the installation (using the Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs). This way, we'll see if the problem is really here. Thanks!

Igor,
I have downloaded Avast av from website, and put it on cd. so should I use that to install after removing existing avast installation through control panel add remove.
Where do I see the option not to install network shield and internet mail?
               Thanks    Mal.

Actually, it may be a little problem (since you don't have the full installer for 4.5, only 4.1). What avast! version do you use - Home or Pro?

Igor,
     perhaps I should clarify.
In my attempt to install Beta 4.5 I have created a problem when comp had been ok.
In attempts to repair this caused comp to freeze so I used system restore, which got comp working.
I am now using 4.1.512 but 4.5 is lurking in the background because if I went into avast menu and attempted to update programme then it would if I let it install 4.5 again along with problems.
What I wish to do is remove all traces of avast av and then reinstall 4.1.512
to get me back to when all was ok. I could do that from CD.
Then if then all ok with 4.1.512 await the release version of 4.5.
I have to go out for a while so will follow up when I return.
   Thanks a lot          Mal

OK, I'm slightly confused about the numbers, because there is nothing like 4.1.512.

There's avast! 4.1 (4.1.501), and avast! 4.5 beta (4.5.512).
So, if you simply want to get back to 4.1, then yes - you can just put the downloaded installer to CD and install it. There's no Network Shield inside 4.1, so just ignore what I wrote previously.

However, if the betaversion doesn't work for you, it's quite likely that the final 4.5 won't work either - because there really won't be much difference between the final release and the current beta (and you are the only one having this kind of problem).
If you want to experiment a little, I could send you a link for the full 4.5 beta installer (i.e. something you can start on a system without avast!, and you can select the modules to install during the setup - no need to perform an update over existing avast! 4.1) - so, you could try if the new avast! 4.5 feature (the Network Shield) is really the cause of your problems (therefore, I was asking if it should be Home or Pro).

Hello again Igor,
sorry if I have confused you. It is me at fault.
When I look at about avast from ball in system tray. I see that it says.
build nov2004 (4.5.512) avast version4.5 home edition. so it seems I have this but not installed. Not sure about this. How do I tell if I actually have 4.5 working?
It is when I  choose update in menu  I freeze up my comp. and system tray icons go missing.
Is it best if you send me the installer link or uninstall and get back to 4.1.
How do you send the link?
Thanks again   Mal

OK, so you actually are running avast! 4.5 beta (the latest build)... can you e.g. start the Simple User Interface?

You get the freeze only when you invoke program update? Does it freeze right then, or after a restart? (it's very strange anyway, since there's no newer version available, as far as I know)

yes I can start the interface, but it appears to be the same as before with 4.1.
I thought I was back to 4.1 having used system restore.
The computer is running normally but no indication I am on 4.5 other than when I look at about avast to see version.
After restart icons were missing and when I attempted to do anything the comp froze.
Hope this helps after my confusing you.

Well, if the About box says it's 4.5, it probably is. If you want to do some additional checking, you can go to the program settings and on the page "Common", look for the checkbox "Enable Skins for Simple User Interface". If it's there, it's avast! 4.5 - avast! 4.1 didn't have this option.
Or, just rightclick on the avast! tray icon; is the 4th item "Program settings"? If yes, it's definitely the latest build of avast! 4.5.

So, now you can work and restart the computer normally unless you try to update the program... right? If you invoked the program update from the avast! menu... what happened? It said that the program has been updated, asked you for restart and when you restarted, the computer was frozen? Did you try to restart (manually) at that moment?

Also, please check avast! logs (Log Viewer). Are there any errors there? (e.g. in "Error", "Critical" or higher cathegories)?

I have a friend who is having a similar problem moving from 4.1.501 up to the Beta 4.5. I got him to move from AVG to AVAST. He downloaded the version 4.1 two days ago. When I mentioned the new Beta 4.5 and how good it was, he decided to try it.

The wife and I visited them last night and he and I got the .dll changed in 4.1 and tried to update to 4.5. We got an antivirus update but the program itself wouldn't update. We tried several times until our wives called us for dinner. He said that if the new version was coming out at the end of the week, he would just wait.

Those Chest errors don't seem to be relevant...
Well, I don't know... seems like you are running the latest build right now without problems... but what could have caused the freeze? Didn't you install anything else?

Igor,
Many thanks for your help and patience with me today.
I do indeed have 4.5 Beta running and seems to be all ok now.
I did have to set pop3 into outlook express to get that working.
I was also able to set skinless simple interface.
The only thing I feel I should keep an eye on is that yestrday when I tried avast repair it reported error. This may have been because other things were not running correctly, so I will see how it goes.
I do not see network shield, Should I?
I was expecting to see something different when I first installed 4.5 so probably messed it up trying to upgrade further.
Hope I am right on that.
Best Wishes to you and all,
                                              Mal

Yes you should.
Can you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Change
Then choose Change function in the popup window and check Network Shield.
I'm not sure, anyway, this is not only for Windows XP  :-\

I'm talking about the 'Change' button. If you don't have it, no way...
Better is wait for the 4.5 setup file on Saturday  8)
