Title: Firewall Advice?
Post by: ADAMC1991 on October 09, 2011, 01:47:48 AM
Hi, I downloaded Avast! today to replace the free trial or Nortons Internet Security on my recently purchased laptop.  After much fuss and research I chose Avast due to it's excellent reputation and fantastic reviews, and successfully (I think) removed Nortons.  However I'm unclear as to whether Avast has a built in Firewall or not.  I searched these forums but the posts I found were all 4 or 5 years old, and not about the latest free version.

I'm sorry if this is a re-post of a topic I have missed, I'm sure it gets asked all the time, but obviously I need to be sure my computer is protected.  If Avast doesn't have a built in Firewall, are there any you would recommend?

Many Thanks in advance!

Adam.

Since you give us NO info about your machine or operating system-I will assume you are running Windows 7.  If this is the case then use the built-in Firewall feature that Windows 7 offers.  You can disable it and run a commercial one if you want, but this is not really needed.
My advice as to Windows XP is much the same.  To date I have no problems with Avast and the Windows Firewall.  Make absolutely certain that you completely remove ALL other anti-virus products from your machine (or fully disable it at the very least).

Hi Adam,
    Avast has three products
     1. Avast! Free
     2. Avast! Pro
     3. Avast! Internet Security.

Firewall is avaliable in the third and full version that is Avast! Internet Security. It will cost you $49.99 for 1 year for 1 computer.

The following system requirements are recommended in order to install and run avast! Internet Security 6.x on your computer:

Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 or higher (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit) or Microsoft Windows 7 (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit).

Windows fully compatible PC with Intel Pentium III processor or above (depends on the requirements of used operating system version and other 3rd party software installed).

256 MB RAM or above (depends on the requirements of used operating system version and other 3rd party software installed).

370 MB free space on the hard disk (to download and install).

Internet connection (to download and register the product, for automatic updates of the program and antivirus database).

Optimally standard screen resolution not less than 1024 x 768 pixels.

Hope you are happy with us today. Have a wonderful day.. Good Karma! :)

When you enable avast! Firewall, the Windows Firewall will automatically disable.

False.
Both will remain enabled as they can work side-by-side without incompatibilities.

ADAMC1991 if you have not done so already tere is a removal tool for norton you can run to clear off any remnants http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/ 26a in the list is for Norton.
As mentioned earlyer Avast Internet Security is the only version of avast that contains a firewall, if your running the free version of avast there are a few good third part firewalls available such as outpost, online armor, comodo, privatefirewall.
