Title: help with Avast 4.5
Post by: Mal76 on November 13, 2004, 09:23:44 PM
Hello All,
I have two computers both with win xp/sp2. asus mobo 7n8x 512 mb ram adsl 512.
On one computer I had installed 4.5 beta,I  had some troubles but much help from you guys, the trouble was not fully resolved so I decided to go back to 4.1.501. Which appeared to run ok. and await 4.5 release.
This morning though I turned on my comp to be greeted with a flag (AVAST NEWS 4.1.396) click for info. When I clicked on this and am asked for restart my comp is then frozen and there are no icons in the right side of the task bar.
The only thing I can do is go into safe mode and do a system restore.
At that point I can operate the comp providing I do not click on the 4.1.396 and restart.
I tried to Manually install 4.5 but this does not install properly so had to use av clear to remove avast. and afterwards install an old avast version I have on disk.
Then the same thing happens regarding the  4.1.396 issue.
Have also tried add.remove repair of avast.
The other computer only had 4.1.501 never tried beta4.5 so I thought put this comp in, but it behaves exactly the same      Hope you can help. Mal.

Hi ,
I just looked at about avast and it gives my version as 4.1.518.
What is this version?
Also should have mentioned Sygate Firewall but at one stage configured this to allow all.

Ignore the (old) inews items request to reboot, just close the window.

You may have to clear avast (uninstall) again, reboot, install again and use the manual update program to 4.5 (ignoring any inews requests).

If you experienced any further problems, first just reboot (this often resolves issues) and don't use system restore first as this makes it more difficult to rectify as you don't fully recognise what state avast is in.

DavidR,
Just tried that I used Av clear to remove Avast then rebooted and installed old version.
I then had to enter license key, and then updated and installed 4.5 which seemed to go ok. Then had to reboot.
When the desktop came up there were no icons in right side of taskbar.
The comp then froze (pointer moveable) but cannot do anything with it.
Cannot shutdown other than with power switch.
If I switch on again it again has no icons in taskbar, so I must shutdown go into safe mode and use system restore to be able to operate.
At the moment no blue balls in right side of taskbar.

Thanks for you reply any more ideas?
                       Mal

This is bad. What you could try is delete the file <windows>\system32\drivers\aswTdi.sys (in Safe mode) and see if it helps. If not, you can also try deleting aswMon2.sys in the same directly.

One of those is probably causing the problems.
Please note that deleting the file(s) won't SOLVE the problem, it will just give us an idea about where the problem is.

Thanks
Vlk

I hope you saw my earlier post that this is happening the same on both computers.
I only have one in at the moment as I only have one monitor and this one is on 4.1.396.

I am very surprised tha exactly the same problem occurs on both of my computers.
I am running 4.1.396. is it worth trying update again.
See the results of that in my yesterday posts.
  Thanks,    Mal

maybe you could try uninstall and fresh install of new download . your system sounds close in comparison to mine and i have never had an issue.
i wonder if you have any other shields or guarding software that might interfere maybe?
HTH :)

I thought you'd try updating, and (temporarily) removing the avast sys files (drivers) as described above.

Hi Vlk and HTH,
Last night I tried removing the driver files but you may remamber I found only aswmon2. Removal of that made no difference.
I just tried to upgrade from 4.1.396 to 4.5 and install went ok and when I look at about avast in the menu it says 4.5.518 but on rebooting
the desktop comes up with no icons in right side of taskbar, and soon freezes when I try to do anything.
Both my computers were running perfectly on 4.1.501 but now can only run 4.1.396 and get warnings comp may be at risk.
Updating then takes me back to same problem.
     Thanks both of you         Mal

HTH,
Thanks for your suggestion about fresh install, but just tried that with same result. I don't think any other shields are in the way as I see in about avast that it is installed.
Also remember this happens on two computers,
         Thanks for your response     Mal

im thinking that maybe there`s something consistent with both pc`s thats upsetting the install and maybe it might be wise to go herehttp://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm (http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm)or even herewww.trendmicro.com/activescan (http://www.trendmicro.com/housecall) just to rule out anything undermining the process

Hi All,
I have tried a few times to uninstall and reinstall. Always with same result.
At the moment I have 4.1.396 installed and the comp seems to run ok as it did with 4.1.501.
So why not with 4.5.
   Help please.

There could be some for of interaction with other programs, namely your firewall, when you update avast from the previous versions.

Leave your older version on the system (so you have AV protection whilst on-line) and download the 4.5 version from avast.com.

Uninstall avast, use the Avast Uninstall Utility, here (http://www.avast.com/eng/download/programs/avast_uninstall_util.html) as well to ensure that all remnants of avast are gone and reboot. Now install avast 4.5 that you downloaded, once up and running, paste the registration key you were originally sent into the relevant place.

ok, you have messed around enough ;) Let's try to approach it in a different way.

- Download and install StartUp.cpl. (can be found HERE (http://212.204.166.18/))
- uninstall Avast using the util from the website
- reboot
- disable everything from loading that isn't needed for the system to work properly
- install Avast 4.5
- reboot

If this solves it, you know where to look.
If it doesn't solve/change anything, have a look at the system log, event log and Avast's log file. It may tell you more about what is going on.

Title: Re:help with Avast 4.5

Eddy,
in avast log file there was in error file ODBC function CREATE TABLE Agent long names  Error 1792.
If you mean in computer management event viewer there were quite alot of entries in antivirus file named client event 90.
Trouble is when I install 4.5 I then have to power down and go into safe mode
so that I can system restore or uninstall to get back to be able to do anything.
      Mal.

Open Avast4.ini and change ODBC to XML.
Let's see if that helps.

oK Eddy
I will try update first if that is no different I will then have to go through uninstall 4.1 then install 4.5 and system restore etc. this takes me a little time,
I changed over to XML.
Back in a little while.     Mal
Title: Re:help with Avast 4.5
Post by: Mal76 on November 14, 2004, 10:01:32 PM
Eddy,
I have tried by updating to 4.5 and then had to go into safe mode so that I could uninstall as it was no different.
I then fresh installed 4.5 and in safe mode I could operate avast 4.5 in as much
as I could look at the menu and about avast and run a scan, so the installation looks to be ok but as soon as I reboot there are no icons in the right side of toolbar, and as soon as I try anything the comp freezes again.
Back to 4.1.396 now.
                                 Mal

Make sure you have enabled "show hidden/system files/folders" when you look for that folder. It is there, if not your windows is corrupt.

Hello All,
I copied and pasted the aswtdi file into
windows/sys32 drivers and tried update again, but same problem.
I have installed 4.5 several times now, including the latest update.
I can operate 4.5 in safe mode but as soon as I reboot, the desk top comes up with no icons in taskbar.
Each time I have to power down on power switch and switch back on, and go into safe mode to be able to remove avast with avast clear utility.
I then install 4.1.396 again and all runs perfectly, as did 4.1.501.
4.1.396 is the only programme I have on disk.
Why is it that all other avast versions have worked without any sort of hickup
but 4.5 no go on my systems.
Excuse some of my points being repeated from earlier posts, but I am trying to summarize.
How necessary is 4.5 over 4.1?
Thanks for any views on this
                                                  Mal.

Mal, the 4.5 version has a lot of improvements. Hold on. Let's correct your problem  ;) Until there, stay with 4.1 version.

Which folder are you talking about here:

Eddy, I do not have that folder.

Hello technical,
The folder Eddy asked me about was aswtdi file which if you see my previous posts, I copied into the windows driver folder in sys 32.
As there had been much talk about this file and I didn't have it I thought I would put it in and try the update again, but to no avail I will hang on with 4.1 which is working ok,
Thanks for the encouragement Technical,

Hello all,
this is just an update on my posts.
Today I connected back in my second computer.(only one monitor so cannot have both connected).
I did find that I had a slightly later avast version 4.1.418 so I installed that,
which works 100%.
I then tried updating to 4.5 and all the same problems were as in my previous posts.
I am happy to stay with 4.1 at the moment, but of course hope my problems may be resolved.
The issue is that e.g. supposing  the problem is with both my computers, and not with the 4.5 version
Why then is it that all other avast versions have and still work 100%.
What is it in 4.5 that stops the taskbar icons appearing and freezes my computer when I have booted up after the install of 4.5.
Bearing in mind that the 4.5 version seems installed ok as I can operate it in safe mode.
The object of this update post is just to try to clarify all my previous writings.
I'm still a happy avast user and giving up is not in my vocabulary but What to do next is.
                Best wishes All
                                        Mal

Hello All,
Thanks Eddy, VLK, Technical and others who helped during my problems in my posts.
I am reporting back to let you all know that all is ok now.
You will see from my posts that I had a problem installing 4.5.
(no icons in right side of taskbar after installing 4.5 then rebooting). Although 4.5 ok in safe mode.
When trying the update today, at the moment desktop came up for a split second I saw processguard panel but no time to respond to it. (first time I had seen this window)
So I uninstalled processguard and reinstalled 4.5.542. following which all came up OK.
As both my computers were exibiting the same problem and have the same progams in, it explains all.
Processguard not allowing Avast.
Thanks again all of you,
             Best Regards.
                                  Mal.

Mal, this is very commom...
TeaTimer, ProcessGuard, Prevx etc. must be disabled while installing a program (safe one I mean) or you will have troubles.
Anyway, glad that you finally got our beloved avast working  8)
