hello,
my mail-client is "GeMail" on windows 98-SE and I d'ont arrive that avast 4.5.518(just installed), even so (though!) transparent proxy, scans incoming and outgoing mails !?
"Gemail" not appears in Mail Protection Wizard....
very grateful for help !! (because practical knowledge limited)
thank-you in advance,
horbar
-
Sorry, transparent mail scanning is only available on Windows NT/2000/XP. Since you have Win98, you'd have to reconfigure GeMail manually (just as it was in avast 4.1)
Thanks

Hi, I have installed GeMail and test it with avast! Internet Mail Provider and everything works fine, so there is no problem. avast! supports GeMail in current version, so you can use it .<
......but nothing about what can be the reason ,that it does'nt
as well, also go with me, although all done as recommended ?
very grateful for any help,

Your email client and SpamPal should be at the same smtp port number (for instance 26). Remove the smtp ports of SpamPal and add 26 if you need. In your email program, choose advanced settings of the email account.
avast could stay on port 25. Do nothing.
Can you test?
Also the problem could be at the smtp authentication... Could you please post this window too?
-
hallo technical,
...my email client and SpamPal have the same smtp port number as you see in the attachments(252).....but I changed it now for both in smtp-Port 26 as you say.......
in my email-Program (GeMail) does'nt exist "advanced settings"......but I think, the settings there are ok.
...... a new test was still negativ !
You say: "the problem could be at the smtp authentication"
please tell-me,what can I do in this case ?
and please look the new attachment "avast4.ini"
Thank you very much for your help:

hallo technical,
...I should like to ask you for a posting-problem ,what I have: working with FireFox I can not arrive to install smilies and tags and attachments......with I.E. it runs......what is the reason?what can I do ?........and when I like to start a new posting(why is it not possible to start a "New Topic",but only
a "New Poll"?), what have I to set in"Question" and the different numbers which appears than ?
thanks...horbar

Horbar, it's a little difficult to understand you. I'll suggest some things. First, do not write dots .... .... but try to let us know what is happening. If you do not know how, a screenshot like you posted before will be good. A picture says more than words ;)
About posting in FireFox, I'm not the best one to answer. But I'm almost sure it's a script problem. Probably you should install a Firefox extension to do so. There is a group of 'smiles' available for Thunderbird and could be for Firefox too.
Anyway, don't worry too much by know. Let's solve your email problem.
You said that a new test was still negative, what do you mean?
-
Technical,
....you sad: set the port 26 in mail client and spampal and "can you test"...that is what I did.
...You say: "the problem could be at the smtp authentication"
please tell-me,what can I do in this case ?
Which screenshots do you like to see?

Did it work? I mean, did avast scan the email?
...You say: "the problem could be at the smtp authentication"

Test:
1) username@smtpserveraddress
2) #smtpserveraddress
3) username#smtpserveraddress
and your password:
1) let it blank
2) write it and choose to remember it
-
Did it work? I mean, did avast scan the email?
No, it did not work for smtp but it works perfectly for pop3-
incoming mails
Test:
1) username@smtpserveraddress
2) #smtpserveraddress
3) username#smtpserveraddress
only :
#smtp.telefonica.net
and :
barnew$telefonica.net#pop3.telefonica.net@localhost
please see the attachments .
I work without password !

Horbar, would it be possible to gather some simple facts?
1) What is your mail provider? (SMTP server)? Is it telefonica.net? Is it pop3.telefonica.net? Is it smtp.telefonica.net?
2) What is you login name to that SMTP telefonica server if it requires authentication? Is it barnew? Is it barnew$telefonica.net? Is it barnew@telefonica.net?
3) What format does Spam Pal requires? It appears that it is using a SMTP authentication in a similar way as avast! So should you (according to SpamPal manual) setup you client to authenticate as:
username$put_your_smtp_here.internet.somewhere?
4) On which port spam pal listens?
5) On which port avast! listens?
6) do you want to scan for viruses before spam pal gets the mails or after spamPal gets them?
Thanks,
Lukas

1.)My provider is "telefonica.net" / for incoming-mails is
pop3.telefonica.net /
for outgoing-mails is smtp.telefonica.net.
2.)it depends wich account
for example: barnew$telefonica.net
3.) Spampal needs a different smtp-port ...accordingly
I set 252......because avast use 25.( look at attachment)
Consequently register in my mail-client is:
"barnew$telefonica.net#pop3.telefonica.net@localhost"
and this has to be correct, because for incoming-mails
avast works absolutly perfect.
4.) pop3-1110 / smtp-252
5.) pop3- 110 /smtp-25
6.) avast is working before spampal
thank you very much for your help!!!!!! :)

Ok, first thing. What is the purpose of running Spam filter on outgoing email? Trying to stop some of the emails from you, if you accidently happen to send spam? Or just training you spam software?
My first solution would be to skip the spam pal during SMTP sends. That would mean this:
Mail client
--------------
SMTP server: localhost
SMTP port: 25
SMTP requires authetication: checked
SMTP username: barnew$telefonica.net#smtp.telefonica.net (or just #smtp.telefonica.net for those your accounts which don't require SMTP auth.)
If you really insist on running spampal on smtp, than you should setup it like this:
Mail Client
---------------
SMTP server: localhost
SMTP port: 25
SMTP requires auth.
SMTP username: barnew$telefonica.net#localhost:252 (or just #localhost:252 for those your accounts which don't require SMTP auth.)
Spam Pal - Port properties
-----------------
Local Port Number: 252
Server: smtp.telefonica.net
Hope this helps.

.... try your propositions but without results :'( ???
please would you look for:
...perhaps you will have a idea ;)
Thanks, horbar
-
So what are your current settings???? And by "no result" you mean what? Monitor is black or what?
Just installed spampal and tested, again:
Mail Client - SMTP:
server: localhost
port: 25
smtp authentication:
user: YOUR_SMTP_USERNAME#localhost:252
pass: YOUR_SMTP_PASSWORD
Spam Pal - SMTP:
port: 252
server: smtp.telefonica.net
This works perfectly in my setup, with OulookExpress and smtp server of my ISP, of course, with proper username and password specified.
Lukas.
BTW: SMTP username is not the POP3 username, just wanted to note!
-
hallo lucor,
..no results means :anothing changed.
...send-you my settings possibles by attachments.
...can't understand, where you put:
"smtp authentication:
user: YOUR_SMTP_USERNAME#localhost:252"
..can't discover any possibility for it :-[ ???
many thanks in advance,

attachment Nr.2

My German is very poor, but:
Postausgangserver should be: Outgoing server, so Anmeldung mit:
Kontoname: barnew$telefonica.net#localhost:252
Passwort: your password
below is the port number, change to: Anschluss: 25.
And on second screen shot, this appears as your username for picking the mail up - that appears to be ok, mail should be scanned before it enters spam pal - when dowloading, and also before spampal when sending.
-
..fantastico ;D
with this settings seems to go......but no any note in the mail, and no in the head reference the result. ::) ???
what can be the reason for it ???
horbar
-
Hallo lucor,
should-like to thank-you once more for your help and patience :)....so could install finally my mail-protection as
I wanted..... accounts with and without SpamPal. ;D
only something can't understand : why does not appear
a note about the realized scan in the header of the
outgoing mail ???.....(in opposit) as against appears this
note in the header of incoming mails :-[
may be, you know somthing....
Saludos horbar
"Sorry my bad english"
>:(
-
Horbar, do you have the option "Insert note into clean messages" checked - on the SMTP tab of Internet Mail Provider???
Lukas.
-
why does not appear a note about the realized scan in the header of the
outgoing mail ???..... (in opposit) as against appears this note in the header of incoming mails :-[
Do you mean two lines line these?
X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0XXX-X, XX/XX/2004), Outbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean
Did you set avast for scanning the outbound (smtp) mail in the specific provider you're using (Internet Mail or Outlook).
-
..@ lukor,
yes, I did it ::)
..@ Technical,
In the incomig mail-header appears:
"X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0XXX-X, XX/XX/2004), Outbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean"
(...and the same for Inbound also!!)
...but anothing in the outgoing headers :'(
..... the sets are realized as lukor explains-it in this
threat before.
-
Horbar, are you sure?
In the incoming mail-header appears:
"X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0XXX-X, XX/XX/2004), Outbound message"
-
yes, when I sended the mail from one of my other accounts,
wich is set to scan outgoing mails.......but not other mails.
.....what I should like is, to have this note in headers of mails
sended by me in my client under "sended mails"
-

Let me understand:
You can sent emails from all your accounts.
All your settings are ok, I mean, for smtp sending mail (authentication, etc.).
Only one of them have the 'clean note' added.
After everything is working, some email of you (in sent mail folder) do not have the 'clean note'...
The 'clean note' are added in both HTML and TXT format emails.
Is it?
-
@ Technical,
Sorry for my bad english :'(...will try to explain it better:
All my settings are now ok, I mean, for smtp sending mail (authentication, etc.)....and sending a mail from an account to an other account, appears the clean-note in the header of the incoming-mail,(but not in the "sended"-mail in the "sent-mail-folder " in the mail-client,....... for this reason I meaned ,that the mails was outgoing not scanned).....
but by a test sending a infected attachment I recognized,
that avast warns in the moment when I press the send-button ;D.....and that was all what I wanted ::)
so I am realy happy :) ;D
...and I thank you once more for your patience and help:-)))
also many thanks to Lukor !!!!!
Avast is a great Tool ;)
best regards from Spain, horbar

@ Technical,
Sorry for my bad English :'(...will try to explain it better:
No need to be sorry, my English is not that well too :-[
Appears the clean-note in the header of the incoming-mail, (but not in the "sent"-mail in the "sent-mail-folder " in the mail-client.
Thanks for noticing that... I never noticed that! :o
Anyway, I'm sure that the outbound mail is being scanned because when I receive an email that I sent to myself I have both inbound and outbound clean notes...
