I am not able to install Avast on my computer. The installer loads and it gets to the part where I can allow community or whatever and do a custom installation. I click next and then the window closes and nothing else happens.
I have no other antivirus programs installed currently, I just removed AVG. I have Avast on 2 other computers and had no trouble at all.
I'm trying install the latest version, running Windows 7 64bit. Any other info needed just let me know. Thanks in advance.

Search for the EXACT removal tool for the EXACT AVG version/edition at http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/ (http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/).
Reboot into Windows Safe Mode and run the removal tool. You might want to do the same for Avast's removal tool from http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) also from Windows Safe Mode.
In any case, please reboot in between runs of removal tools.
Download the latest stable Avast from the official site and try again.
Please report back.

Make sure that you have removed AVG completely from the computer. You can use the removal tool from AVG.
If you have 32 bit O.S download and run this.

Else
http://download.avg.com/filedir/util/support/avg_remover_stf_x64_2011_1322.exe
Once you remove AVG you need to reboot the machine.
Download the latest version of avast and reinstall it again. This time the issue will be fixed.

Did all that you said. Got through everything but this time it just froze up at installation progress. Never even showed a progress bar, just a cancel button.

Can you run the specific removal utility for AVG under Windows Safe Mode again?
Do you have "optional" processes active? Disable them.
Any optional device connected? (USB devices, or even ethernet, wifi or any other connection, temporarily disconnect and disable them when you are about to run the setup.exe for Avast).
Any other security tools active, or installed (but inactive), or that were seemingly uninstalled before?
Are you downloading the installation setup.exe for Avast ANEW from the official site?
After you download the setup.exe, right click on it -> properties -> "unblock" -> OK.
Then right click -> "Run as Administrator".
Please report back, specially including answers to the above questions.

I'll run the AVG utility again.
Can you explain what you mean "optional" processes? I'm sure it is very obvious but it's completely over my head at the moment.
Will also disconnect wifi and double check that no other security programs are running.
I installed it from download.com The links from Avast sent me to it.

What I mean with "optional" processes is anything that is not a "must". Many users tend to use some method of automatic startup for several different things, so they automatically start together with Windows.
Some examples may be quicktime, flash autoupdate, printer tools, theme tools, tools to enhance office performance (for LibreOffice, OpenOffice, MS-Office...), RAM tools, autodefrag tools, monitoring tools...
Some of those might show some icon on the tray area. Some might be listed in the Task Manager, and there are several places to find the "autostart" tools, depending on the method used to start them.
My point is that there might be something conflicting the setup of Avast, or at least making it so slow that it seems that is not responding.

Currently trying to fix whatever is causing it and maybe then I can install Avast.

You should take care of it before anything else. First, do a backup of your important data (data that, otherwise, can't be recovered if anything bad happens). Then proceed with the instructions posted in that link.

Late reply, but just wanted to thank you for your help. I ran the check disk and it finally finished. Still had a hard disk error? but everything is backed up, computer runs a lot smoother and..I finally got avast installed.

Then run chkdsk again with the correct parameters, reboot and check again until no errors are found (specially surface errors should be eliminated, but not only).
