AJones, do you have any idea what the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\SYNCOR11.DLL on your machines is? I found it while analysis the crash dumps you have sent to me.

Do you know what it belongs to? Can you open its Properties and see the Version tab - what does it show?

Thanks
Vlk

SYNCOR11.DLL in \windows\system32\ is a part of the SoundMax audio driver

Please try running http://www2.asw.cz/~vlk/evptest2.exe and post the results.

Also, please open My Computer, click Help -> About Windows and post a screenshot of the About box.

Thanks

OK, that explains it!

You seem to be using the RC (release candidate) version of XP SP2. This version is deprecated and you shouldn't be using it.

Please update your system to the official SP2. This will resolve all the problems.

Thanks
Vlk

PoLak:

I went to http://download.microsoft.com and downloaded Windows XP SP2 and ran that on my computer. It over wrote the older one, & since then Avast works. Microsoft sites states use the Autoupdate feature for single user, but the Autoupdate icon on my computer did not progress beyond 3% since last night. So today, I downloaded SP2 around 275 MBytes.

Vlk Thanks, Could you remove the screen image that I posted. I notice that my C:\WINNT folder is around 2.5 GBytes, Is there a way to remove SP1, I presume this SP2 wrote over the previous SP2 becoz it did not ask me for archival.

I am impressed with Avast, I recommended to our Public Library administrator to not renew Norton License next year instead use Avast. Lets see what she does with it.

Good Job Guys.

You could not download SP2 OR new SP2 did not get Avast working? If this does not work, My recommendation is Remove Avast, clean using a registry cleaner, wait for some time when newer updated Avast comes, download and load. Thats exactly what I wanted to do, if it did not work for me.

Jones, are you talking that is avast who is blocking the SP2 download?
It does not do it... anyway, avast could be disabled and SP2 downloaded...

I did not understand What Polak said, He did IM me and say that He could not update SP2 using Autoupdate. In my earlier posting I was asking him if he was able to update SP2 or updated SP2 was preventing him from using Avast. Its got nothing to do with Avast.

Technical: Polak doesnot have Avast working on his computer yet!

Polak go to Microsoft site and download SP2 which is like 275 MBytes. Thats what Idid.

Is there a way to remove SP1,
There is no need to do that. In fact if you would do this, what is the use of ALL the security updates/patches if you remove them??????? SP2 does NOT replace SP1, it is an addition.

Indicating a corrupt or illegal Windows. Have you tried to install THIS (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&displaylang=en)?

SP2 does NOT replace SP1, it is an addition.

In fact, I read the opposite. You can use SP2 (full setup file) even without SP1 installed.
SP2 (full) has SP1 inside itself  ::)
