Title: Millions of Timeout message Boxes

Hi,
I installed version 4.5 and,  when i run microsoft outlook (all the accounts smtp/pop3 well setted) avast start popping out with timeout message boxes.... millions of them until the computer freezes and i have to reboot manually...
(it was working well with previous versions of avast)
What's the problem ?

Try to increase both timeouts (of avast into the Advanced tab of Internet Mail provider settings and of your email account, in Properties of the account, Advanced tab too). You can set both to 600, for instance. If you're on a DSL connection (not dial-up) it shouldn't be necessary a so long timeout anyway...

Do you use any spam killer?
Sometimes the spam killer enters in a 'loop' and consume all the timeout.
Shutdonw it and start it again.  ;)

Yes i use Norton AntiSpam... but this was not the problem...
I am on DSL connection so i really think it is not a real timeout problem.

I see that the 4.5 doesn't allow you to make the mail wizard thing as it is automatic...

anyway to make my account working again i had to manually reset them in outlook with the correct smtp/pop3 data (not using 127.0.0.1).

Moreover, i tried to uninstall avast 4.5 and reinstall it... now it says i have only 6 days remaining for the demo...

Barabba,
can you please post what are your account settings in Outlook and the Antispam solution? And do you use MS Outlook or Outlook Express?

I don't know the specific configuration details for Norton Antispam, but usualy you would have to direct you mail client to the Antispam program and let the antispam to actualy download your mail.

So it would be something like:
Mail Client:
pop server: localhost (or 127.0.0.1)
pop port: you antispam port

antispam:
pop server: your real mail server (pop3.myisp.net)
pop port: 110

You should configure you mail client and antispam as if avast! is not installed - avast! mail scanner will catch the connection automaticly as it leaves you PC  - in your setup propably from Norton Antispam program - but that also usualy means you have to have 127.0.0.1 as your mail server in Outlook - cause thats how antispam likes it.

Please, write more information.

1) I use Outlook (not express)
2) I tried just disabling the antispam and it was still locking my computer with millions of "timeout" message boxes
3)My actual configuration is (with both avast an antispam installed)

Outlook:
Smtp and POP3: domainname.com
Username: Normal (not with the #)

Now it seems to work... i hope avast is checking as you say my emails intercepting the communications...

Anyway.... after reinstalling it says that my licence will expire in 6 days.. (not 60) so i don't have so much time in evaluate this software in order to choose if buy it or not...

I own actually a Norton Antivirus software (Not Installed right now) but i am not satisfied by it... too slow and heavy on my xp so i am trying avast (a lot of friends told me it is great)...

We will see... i already paid for norton and if i have to make the change i wont to be sure...

The change from 60 to 6 days is caused by the fact you reinstalled it. Avast notice this and change the time. This is a anti-piracy messure in the Avast trial.

There are occasions that Alwil handed the person who experienced this a key so that a 60 day eveluation was possible. Ask them by email I would say and mention in the email this thread.

Vik, this is kind of strange....

Yesterday, after a few tries and using my providers mail settings (i have 4 accounts in outlook) it was working fine...

This morning i just turned on my pc and "Surprise" another time millions of timeout messagebox ... I take out the message box display for timeout from the avast menu and at least i don't get the computer hang... but my email is it still not working ...

I tried to make the log as you asked, but it was creating a huge file and locking my machine (i termiate the application from the task manager when the file was about 200MB!).

I read all the threads you said (and related) and i found something about the firewall... well ok, i went to the firewall settings (standard xp service pack 2 firewall) and add a specific exception for your mailsv executable...)
Nothing.. still can't get in my email...

This is a pain...

I am using: Windows XP SP2, Outlook (not express, but the one that comes with Office XP), DSL connection.
Old Version 4 (tested on the other machine i have it was working perfectly)

Note: My email accounts are set as Normal... so pop.myprovider.com and username (not using 127.0.0.1)

PLEASE HELP.... i don't want to go back to norton...

I tried to STOP the avast email provider leaving ON only the outlook/exchange provider and now it seems to work....

So what... do i have to leave the email provider OFF ?

Hi,

don't worry, I'm sure we'll find a solution.

I see two important things in your post. First, you're using regular Outlook XP (not Outlook Express). This is a very important point as Outlook should be covered by the avast Outlook plugin (instead of the Internet Mail provider).

So my question is: do you see the Outlook plugin splash screen when starting Outlook? If not, can you try to go to the Outlook About box, click Disabled Items and make sure the avast plugin is not listed there? If it is, just remove it and you should be all set.


Next, even if the log file has ~200MB, I'd be interested in it. Could you please post at least a couple of hundreds of lines from the beginning of the file? I'm sure the file will have a very repetitive pattern in it so it should be quite easy to find out what was going on. My guess is that this file would also be extremely well compressible, so trying to ZIP it may actually reveal a file of reasonable size (e.g. 1 megabyte).

About the LOG, i deleted it as i resteored the normal version (no logging things) ....
anyway i am pretty sure that, as you say,  it was a whole list of repetetive "Server Timeout" (like the millions of messageboxes that were hanging my computer...)

I am going to check now what you said in the previous post..... and i'll answer in a couple of minutes....

Well. The fact that there was a number of those message boxes indicates that there were not only the "Sleep"s in the LOG but also some connection records.

I mean, when a mail client connects to a server, it does this sequentially (technically speaking, in one "thread"). So what I would normally expect in such a case is exactly 1 message box. Since you're getting large number of them, though, it indicates that the operation had to be executed in many threads in parallel, which is quite strange. I'd like to find out why this happened and what can be done to prevent it.

Ok, it works now......
So the trick was to disable the "email provider" and enable only the "Outlook Exchange" one....
inphact as soon as i start it again, i have the same problem....

I have now the banner showing out in outlook (onload) and it seems it is really scanning my mail...

Hope this can help other people with the same problem...

Is this avast avast Home or Professional Edition?
The fact that it's now only 6 days is caused by reinstallation. It's basically a protection against those who kept the program reinstalling every 2 months as a trial... :-\

But if it's avast Home, why not register and get your free key good for 14 months? http://www.avast.com/i_kat_207.php?lang=ENG

We know have an updated aswTdi.sys version that may solve the problem.

How to install it:

1. Download the file http://www2.asw.cz/~vlk/aswtdi.zip
2. Unpack its contents to the following locations:
     a) <avast>\setup\inf
     b) \windows\system32\drivers
(overwrite existing versions)
3. Restart the machine.

This build should solve problems with multiple connections being redirected in loop (generating e.g. a large number of timeout messages or 100% CPU load in ashMaiSv.exe) in conjunction with certain personal firewalls (such as Norton PF).

I'm trying your last version of ashMaiSv.exe but unsuccesfully...  :'(

ok i was sent here from another post........ using incredimail.. with cable internet... and getting hundreds of timeouts....... not sure how to set the time for longer, but i doubt its that since its a cable connecton......  and all the other stuff in this link is above my head........  so if anyone can help in a SIMPLE way or step by step instructons it would be so helpful... thanks in advance...

Hi there - I too have a problem with 4.5 Home (registered) in that I get timeouts with email. This did not happen with the previous version.

I use the Turnpike email client and collect email from 4 different ISP mail accounts thus the email collection is set to:
server: 127.0.0.1
Mailbox : osborneuk#mail.btinternet.com
Server: 127.0.0.1
Mailbox: crosswayl#pop3.lineone.net

etc

Avast .ini has:

DefaultPopServer=mail.btinternet.com
DefaultSmtpServer=mail.btinternet.com

I connect to btinternet by broadband 1Mbyte

Here is an extract from my email client's log:

Thu, 18 Nov 2004 15:58:40 Starting to send mail to mail.btinternet.com

I assume that as I don't use outlook/express turning off the mail  provider will stop the checking of incoming email.

I spent well over an hour this morning trying to figure out what was going wrong with my wife's computer due to this error.  I would not get any of these messages until I tried to retrieve emails from the my email server using outlook.  I would also receive errors when I signed in to earthlink task panel and looked at the mail server to see if I have emails.  May be this will help in locating the problem.  I am running MS XP Home SP2, with Outlook 2000.  My other computer which is the exact same setup except it is running MS XP Pro SP2 does not have this problem.

500 mHz Dual processors
Windows XP Pro (SP2)
1gb of ram
18 gig SCSI HD

Norton 2004 internet security is installed (NOT the antivirus portion, JUST the firewall).  Wether the firewall is enabled or disabeled doesn't matter, I still get millions of boxes. I patched my file, and it created two logs; aswmaisv.log and aswmaisv.ori.

The mail scanning software used to work with no problems, but one day it magically decided to stop working. I didn't install or remove any software when it decided to give me the million boxes, it just happened.

Ran the "fix" (that was talked about here: We know have an updated aswTdi.sys version that may solve the problem.). Fired up Thunderbird (that's the e-mail client I use) and still got the millions of boxes. Log files did change, and here they are.

Hi again.

Figured out the problem (for my end at least).

I turned off the Anti-spam feature in NIS 04, and everything works fine (still have the update applied that i had to extract into the avast folder and the system32 (or something)  folder).

It seems (at least on my system) the two didn't play nicely with one another.

Same problem for now more than one week (probably ater the 11th of November update). Thousands of timeout messages when Outlook 2002 tries to connect to my email servers using POP3 on port 110 (no SSL).
I also have the Firewall (and only the Firewall) of Norton Internet Security 2003 running.
I've updated the "ashMaiSv.exe" and installed the debug version.
 
Thanks to "viriiman", disabling the anti-spam feature of NIS solved the problem.

I'm having the "millions of timeouts" problem also, using Eudora v. 6.1, NOT using Outlook or Outlook Express.
If I disable the avast! Internet Mail provider, I can download my emails; otherwise it hangs while trying to connect to the server; I also get the repeating timeout messages. Once that happens, there is no way to break out of the loop except by cutting power to the computer; ctrl-alt-delete doesn't help, because while Task Manager eventually comes up there is no apparent way to stop avast! from there.

Other info:
OS = Windows XP, SP2 installed.
Using ZoneAlarm and Norton Internet Security firewalls (I know, overkill...).
Also using Norton Antivirus and Grisoft AVG antivirus.
I installed the avast! v. 4.5.529 beta as recommended above, and rebooted.
I've reverted to my standard email server/domain (i.e., I removed the 127.0.0.1 domain that earlier versions of avast! required).

I can send my log file, if you like, but it doesn't seem to show much except for the startup error I always get because of the other antivirus software that conflicts with avast!

That's okay - because 1) I've gotten far more astonished reactions than yours, and 2) I'm originally from New York, and New Yorkers don't generally take offense at things until you back your car over them three or four times.

But to answer your question, I think I have SP2's firewall on, too. Reason I say "I think" is because when I installed SP2, I tried turning it off because I had the other two firewalls running. But whenever I look at it later, it seems to be on again. Don't know why.

But in any case, none of that seems to have made any difference in getting avast! to work properly until version 4.5. All the firewalls seem to play well together.

Regarding running the multiple AV softwares - I've found it pays off. Sometimes avast! catches something first, sometimes Norton, sometimes AVG. A version of Bagle caused me too much misery several months ago when I got it before my AV sig file updated.

Having all those things enabled on the same computer doesn't mean you are more secure than others. Actually, those things you just mentioned, are "killing" each other and they're "killing" your system as well. Btw, you can have all those antiviruses on same machine without any problems, unless you are using resident scanners in the same time...

Running hardware router/firewall, software Sygate Personal Firewall, avast! antivirus and that's about security in here. Never had any single problem with my system...

We know that many of users came in these forums for help. We helped many of them, huge majority to be true... if some advices we gave doesn't help solving your problem, that doesn't mean those advices are not good. That could be because you have some different security programs working in the same time on same machine... no one in here could possibly know what could be exact solution for you specific problem. We always try many different possibilities, so many people came back tens of times to the same thread, asking what's next if some advice doesn't help at first try... they have will to solve their problem, and they have patience... but it looks like you gave up on first one. I have Norton IS 2002; it doesn't have a spam blocker. I use Spamnix with my Eudora, but that filters messages after they've been downloaded; my problem is when I run avast! with the internet mail provider active, I can't even connect to my mail server, let alone download any mail.

The new mail detection that will work automatically. Please, set up your email account just as avast does not exists. It will detect the pop3/smpt/imap ports and scan your messages.

Of course, if you use a spam killer, the settings will be describe in help files or the website of the spam killer manufacturer.

Hi there.  I'm coming into the discussion kind of late, but essentially I have the same problem Barabba had with endless timeout messages.  I have XP and Outlook Express, use the Avast home version, with Norton 2002 Antivirus (ok, don't throw things at me).  :-[  Anyway, at first I turned off the "On-Access Protection Control", but then my e-mails were no longer scanned for viruses.  Last night I simply did a system restore to a time before I downloaded 4.5, but I don't think my e-mails are being scanned yet.  (I'd like 4.1 back, please.)  I'm REALLY not a technical person, so is there a cliff-notes solution to this problem yet?  Thanks.

It's OK, I also was frustrated when I see that people are desperately asking for help and then if just one thing doesn't help, they give up... that's not solution my friend. You have to stick around, work with us and we'll find solution for your problem. Someone will always come up with something that others maybe forgot to mention. We work as a team, you can not find competition between technical support staff in here. We are here to help new avast! users, as well as to help each other. That's why these forums are greatest.

Stick around, I'm sure we'll find something. And, also... I think that Alwil works hard to release new program update... I'm pretty sure.

Unfortunately I don't know anything about Turnpike mail client that you use, especially how to set it, because I never used it. Have you tried to set all your e-mail accounts (which are btw, 5 in total, if I'm not wrong) from the scratch ? Just like avast! doesn' exist at all... be sure to write down all those necessary information before you start creating them from the scratch... that includes pop3 and smtp server names, login names, and passwords. See if that maybe helps.

If that doesn't help, you'll have to wait for some advice from someone who is more familiar with Turnpike mail client.

As far as download of 4.1 version of avast! goes, I'm not sure, but I think that Vlk already said that it's not possible to find it anywhere on avast! web site... unless you find someone who still keeps avast! 4.1 old version on his HD.

If I set incoming mail with the mail address of each ISP and the mailbox address then I get mail but assume that Avast doesn't check it.

If I set the mail address of each ISP to 127.0.0.1 and the mailbox to me#mail.isp.com  then I don't get mail although I used to under the previous version and it was noted as having been checked.

In neither instance can I send mail.  to do that I have to turn off the mail provider in avast.

if you think any logs would help please say although I have posted some previously.

avast! 4.5 handles mail checking automaticaly. No need for extra settings. You just have to configure your e-mail accounts just like avast! doesn't exist, that means... original smtp and pop3 server names and your account info (loging name and password)

Btw, what version of Windows are you running ? Sorry, I couldn't find that info in your previous posts...

Exactly, Windows XP and NT users should behave just like avast! doesn't exist. Enter original smtp and pop3 server names, as well as original loging name and password provided to you by your mail provider.

Also, you may wanna check my signture and try to set your mail provider (avast! On-Access Scanner) properly. Activate all those avast! signatures, so you'll be able to see whether your e-mails are scanned or not.

I downloaded the build recommended--so far no problems and it looks like my e-mails are being scanned the way they should be.  I'll keep my fingers crossed that did the trick.  THANKS! :)

no sign of timeout.  without avast email is sent almost straight away.  but now turnpike reports a time out although avast doesn't.

I see we are making some progress. :)
Can you check the Time Out settings in both avast! and OE and make sure they are set for at least 180.
Did you confirm that there aren't any problems with the mail service at your ISP?

don't use OE - Turnpike's my client.  and as I say without avast running email is sent every 60 seconds and is transmitted without any delays.

I'm having problems too. I run W98. I use Outlook for my business and am having no problem there sending or receiving email. But in Outlook Express I can receive mail but can't seem to send it without changing the properties of the server back to the pop.server.net and stmp.server.net and account name. Then it lets me send once (i think) before it reverts to hanging and giving me this message:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'kcalla@server.net'. Subject 'test', Account: 'My Internet-Mail', Server: '127.0.0.1', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '530 5.7.1 Relaying not allowed: kcalla@server.net', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 530, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

I'm not a HUGE computer whiz so please reply in language I can understand! Thanks!

KCalla, avast! works with multiple smtp/pop servers and can protect as many pop3/smtp server accounts as you want. If you click CTRL+ALT+DEL do you see ashMaiSv.exe running?

If not, can you do:

1. Configure your email accounts to work without the antivirus and test them.
2. If everything is fine, close all your email clients (programs).
3. Start Menu > All programs > avast antivirus > Mail Protection Wizard
4. Follow the non Outlook/Exchange option (i.e., the second one).
    You can choose the supported email programs and select all the accounts
    (even the ones created in the future).
5. Configure your email accounts to use avast! as antivirus.

Note: the pop/smtp default servers are just the 'default' ones. They would be used to send files to Alwil Software (for virus analysis, for instance) and in special email accounts configurated to use 'default' servers.

What version of avast! you are running ? There is new program update 4.5.531 available. Update your antivirus manually if it's not updated yet and see if that solves your problem...

ashMaiSv.exe was running.
I reconfigured my email accounts and sent 5 emails from OE and it's working! So far so good!

Running 4.5.523 - tried to update and it said program is up to date.

Hi,

I installed Avast, XP Home Edition and MS Outlook with 3 well configured and tested e-mail accounts.

Since few days ago, when Avast were auto-updated to 4.5.523 version, a problem occurs every 10 minutes: an alert message Timeout connecting 217.116.0.XXX port 110  >:(.

Retry or Cancel options has the same result: the message appears again after 10 minutes  ???.

I have no problems with sending or receiving e-mail messages (no authentication needed to connect with my mailserver).

Avast Plug-in run on MS Outlook start, as habitual.

What's the problem ? Thank you

I've installed the .536 update. Not getting the millions of timeouts any more, but  still not able to connect with the email provider active. Eudora 6.1 is giving me a message "POP server [my pop server name] command error:   ERR: concurrent connections limit in avast exceeded (process:NAVAPW32.exe, NAVAPW32.exe, NAVAPW32.exe, NAVAPW32.exe, NAVAPW32.exe, NAVAPW32.exe, NAVAPW32.exe,..." and it scrolls off hte limit of the message window.

Suspecting that NAVAPW32.exe is a Norton antivirus program, and that avast and NAV weren't playing well together, I disabled Norton's email protection nad tried downloading. This time, I was simply unable to connect, and I cancelled the process before getting the expected millions of timeouts and having to reboot again. Terminating avast email provider and leaving NAV running returned things to normal - I was able to download without problem.

You won't be able to run NAV and avast togheter.
Please, uninstall NAV and not only disable the providers.
You probably will have to download and run NAV uninstall utility (http://ftp://ftp.symantec.com/misc/consumer/Rnav2003.exe)  ;)

We know have an updated aswTdi.sys version that may solve the problem.

How to install it:

1. Download the file http://www2.asw.cz/~vlk/aswtdi.zip
2. Unpack its contents to the following locations:
     a) <avast>\setup\inf
     b) \windows\system32\drivers
(overwrite existing versions)
3. Restart the machine.

This build should solve problems with multiple connections being redirected in loop (generating e.g. a large number of timeout messages or 100% CPU load in ashMaiSv.exe) in conjunction with certain personal firewalls (such as Norton PF).

If needed check avast4.ini if everything under the [mailscanner] section is set to default. (see Technicals FAQ thread on this board)

Could you please start a new thread in the avast Home/Pro forum section, summarizing your system configuration as well as the problems you're having so that we can really help?

The biggest difference I see between your setting and mine is this:
 StartSmtp=0
My setting is:
StartSmtp=1
Please see if that makes a difference and let us know.
