I used the search tool, but if I missed where this is covered I apologize and just point me there please and lock the thread.
I have been informed by a very novice computer user that she was able to renew her Avast free home edition last month and when I asked her about the license key she said she never saw it. She never had to insert it into any place. I haven't done a renewal of mine in a bit -- same free home edition on this machine and the others are not being used online for now -- so maybe I missed some new style, or am just completely confused?
I thought I remembered that one always had to get a new license key to be able to activate the next one-year subscription. Has that changed? Or am I confusing this product with some other? It is possible my old brain isn't storing and accessing data properly anymore. (If it ever did.)

That was the case back in version 4.8 Since version 5, life has gotten much simpler. :)

For computers with Internet connection and Avast 5.x or 6.x, go to maintenance -> registration.
For system with older versions of Avast or without Internet connection, you still need to perform the traditional renewal http://www.avast.com/en-us/registration-free-antivirus.php (http://www.avast.com/en-us/registration-free-antivirus.php).
In that same page you can find a renewal link, instead of a complete new registration.

Okey-dokey. Sure appreciate the feedback, bob3160 and ady4um. I did an upgrade a bit back but I didn't think for a simple upgrade to the newer version I'd be asked for the key. And the fact that the lady in question is a novice had me asking the questions to be sure she had done it correctly.
So no more license key on a renewal of 5.x or 6.x and are online, right? Any other cases where we won't ... Wait a minute -- are there license keys at all now for the latest versions? Are license keys completely history if we are online and have the newest versions?
Sorry, more questions. But that's my name, so shouldn't be a surprise, right?

No, INcorrect. Read again, closely, my previous explanation in my previous post. The fact that you *could* do it directly from inside the main GUI of Avast doesn't mean that there are no more registrations, or that license keys are not needed. They are still needed, and there are alternative methods to obtain them.

So once more, if it's okay, when renewing 5.x or 6.x online one might still have to install a license key. Could someone explain what might trigger that? Thank you.

You would only have to install the license file manually if it fails to register through the GUI which is the easyest and prefered method.

If the usual process goes as it should all will work without any need for playing with the license key. Got it. Thank you.
Just wanted to nail that down before I finished here. Thanks everyone. No need to go through a list of what could go wrong that might require playing with the license key manually because that could be a never-ending story and nobody but Hollywood has time for that.
