Title: avast! shield and firefox connection reset
Post by: HolySafari on November 07, 2011, 08:18:49 AM
I keep on receiving the message when i am surfing with firefox that connection is resetted after i surf for a while with the avast shield on.
Then i have to disable it and re-enable the shields right away then it's fine again.
What's the problem?
I'm using the avast free 6.0.x
Firefox 7.0.1
i am using it with spybot SD
and i previously used norton and after reading some topics i downloaded the removal program to remove it completely but the problem still exists.
can anyone help?

Not much info about your system there but for a start i would delet spybot, mainly teatimer is the problem but this program is known to cause issues with avast, use malwarebytes instead.

the paid is only a one time fee for a liftime license...    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

it does have a protection module and auto update...if you want

IE wont allow access to the site and Malwarebytes blocks it as well even though virus total says its safe, seems like the site has been taken down to me ???

HolySafari dont forget to run a search and have a look through your system for any spybot leftovers, there are quite a few as i cleaned this program of a friends system last week, you will need to show hidden files to see all the remnants.

No problem here connecting to that site with firefox 7.0.1, see image extract.

What firefox security based ad-ons do you have installed ?

EDIT: Just a thought have you ever been able to connect to that site as sometimes there can be country specific blocks on content ?

but the firewall problem is still there
the werid thing is i can't go to most site but i can access youtube for some werid reason.
the connection reset message is still showing up
how do i run a check for leftover spybot stuff?
i went into program files and deleted the left over fold what else can i do?

The weird reason is you are probably using https to connect to youtube ?

You should always uninstall programs in the first instance using the normal windows add remove programs. If you go deleting folders that may prevent add remove programs from working as essentially you have killed/deleted the uninstall element when deleting the folders.

i did uninstall spybot from the usual way from the remove program in windows
the left over folder was what i deleted after it was removed
so was that wrong?
did it screw things up because of it?
but i find it strange how i just have to disable avast shield then re-enable it for the internet to work again

If you uninstalled first the remnants are strange, check out this site as it has removal tools for specific applications, I don't know if that includes spybot S&D. See http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/ (http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/), this has a collection of manufactures removal tools, so that should remove any remnants, registry, etc.

If nothing there for it try, CCleaner's Registry (section), Scan for issues - CCleaner - Temp File, Registry Cleaner, etc. (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/).

so i used the cc cleaner thing and cleaned everything
then i restarted comp and after lik 15 min of surfing it happened again
as of now i still cannot notice any pattern of anything occuring b4 or after the connection is reset message pops up due to avast shield.
and the time that i get to surf b4 it pops up varies from few hours to few min

I can't notice a pattern either, as the web shield would either work all of the time or not at all. You could also check out your ISPs support/status pages and see if they are reporting any outages, etc.

What add-ons do you have installed in firefox ?
You could try running firefox (safe mode), it disabled all add-ons and see if that makws any difference.

If none of the above makes any difference, since firefox have now released version 8, it might be an idea to uninstall the current firefox and do a clean install of firefox8 and see if that makes any difference.

lol ya i just did the reinstall of firefox of 8.0
and after 5 min the thing appeared again
I really do appreicate all the help i think imma be more vigilant and test running a few tests to see if there is indeed a pattern btw the internet reset thing also appear with internet explorer i tested it there too and it has no additional addons
so i don't know it's all so confusing
let me see if i can pin point anything

There will probably be leftovers of spybot in program data and users\name\appdata\roaming you would have to have show hidden folders ticked to be able to see it, i would think you will find some norton / symantic stuff in there to if you used to have that installed.
Have you tried resetting the windows firewall to default rules ?

What version of windows are you using ?

so i found a leftovers of spybot in program data and nothing in users\name\appdata\roaming
there was no norton/symentec because i used the complete removal tool
i also did the default thing for windows firewall
i use windows vista
and i found out it's the website shield that is blocking stuff cause if i disable it then there is no problem
i just encountered the problem again i hope the fix you provide will be able to fix it

If you click on windows firewall in control panel and then up the top left click on allow a program or feature through the firewall and just check through the list to make sure there are no entries for norton there, if so delet them.
Type Norton in the run bar and click on see more results then click computer from the choices and let windows do a search, delet any norton entries that are found.
Repeat the process but now type in Symantec and then repeat again for Spybot.
Now update and run a full scan with Malwarebytes to see if anything is found and let the program deal with anything it finds, im not sure if any of this is still going to help as im just going through the process of elimination and if it is still not resolved the only other thing i can think of is a clean install of avast.

Download a freash copy of avast http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe and the uninstall tool and save http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe.
Uninstall avast from remove programs then reboot into safe mode ( tap f8 while starting system ) Go to where you saved the download tool, open it and scroll to the versions of avast you have used 4,5,6 run once for each version you have used, when done reboot back into normal mode and run CCleaner if you have it! for cleaner and registry, now go to the avast install file you downloaded and install, once installed fill out the registration form and reboot the system again

Hopefully its all working now

since it is the web shield is it possible for me to just disable it
and is malwarebyte enough to cover that ground?

Im out of ideas on this connection reset issue  ::)

Malwarebytes is not an antivirus so it wont be looking for the same stuff as the webshield.

If you don't have high confidence that your system is clean, you might use one of the bootable Antivirus scanners and also go on to carefully look around at what is started (SysInternals autoruns program is a useful tool) and how things are configured in general.

If you are familiar with Internet protocols you could snoop traffic to examine what is happening at that level (Wireshark is useful).

One way to test for some spurious network activity is to run a test client on one machine, a test server on another machine, both machines directly connected or on an isolated LAN.  If that proves negative and one wants to test through their ISP, they can run the test server on a remote host (assuming they have access to one).  There are numerous free network test programs  including some specific to HTTP.  There are also numerous perl scripts and other types of programs available as source (if you program).

If you are on a LAN with others, they can sniff the packets to/from your machine which makes it easier to pull various pranks/attacks.

so the problem is still pretty annoying
and i was combing through everything to find any residual norton/symentec files
and i found this
C:\TOSAPINS\Norton-Internet-Security
i'm using a toshiba
but no matter how i try to remove it, it won't delete with the latest norton removal tool
any ideas?
