Title: ** INTRODUCING: NEW BETA VERSION OF AVAST - 6.0.1351 **
Post by: Vlk on November 11, 2011, 03:09:47 PM
This build has now been replaced by v6.0.1352. Please see here (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=88272) for details.

Hi everyone,

we will soon be releasing a new program update of avast. As usual, we're making it available for public testing a few days before the official release. The current version number is 6.0.1351.

This is hopefully going to be a smooth service release, mainly designed to fix some of the issues of the previous v6.0 builds. It also moves us a bit closer to the release of v7, slated for Q1 2012.

Here's an [incomplete] list of the most important changes:
- Script Shield now works with Google Chrome, all versions of Firefox and Acrobat Reader
- Improvements in WebRep plugins (especially IE)
- Stability improvements in aswSP.sys and the avast! sandbox
- File system shield: improved on-close scanning
- avast! Internet Security: new antispam engine
- Web Shield and Script Shield: more options in the UI

The UI of the new version also includes the avast! Market, a new way to get info (and potentially try/buy) other avast products. This section can be hidden by disabling the avast! recommendation features in the avast! Community settings.

The content is not final yet - please take it like this.

Free AV: http://files.avast.com/files/beta/6.0.1351/setup_av_free.exe
Pro AV: http://files.avast.com/files/beta/6.0.1351/setup_av_pro.exe
IS: http://files.avast.com/files/beta/6.0.1351/setup_ais.exe

You can either install from scratch, or over an existing installation of avast (any version).
Users of the previous beta can also use the normal in-product updater.

Thanks
Vlk

Downloading and will install over the top of 6.01289.

Install went fine, I did a custom install so as not to install the IM and P2P shields (don't have those applications). On reboot registration went fine even clicking on the free version (which had been an issue in the forums recently).

I noticed that some of my settings and exclusions were gone, I can't recale if this was the case in previous install over the top pre-release versions, this is a bit of a pain. The sooner avast get an export and import settings/configuration the better, this is something which we have been screaming for, for ages.

Attached images of the Options (pre-checked in the install) and my choices and the completion asked for reboot.

So you ran the installer on top of the previous version, but it didn't show the usual "Update" command?
The screens you posted look more like from a new installation (from scratch).

Thanks

I just installed over the old version and yes, I did not got the update button. The setup installed the new version over the old one and did not saved my settings either. Other than that, everything is working fine for now :)

Hello ... please tell me whether the planned version 7 improve the treatment of complex threats such as Win32:Alureon, Win32:ZAccess and so on.

I would also like to draw attention to AutoSandbox and adapt it to Trojans such as Win32:Ransom.

And whether the protection of important branches of the registry?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Dmitry.

Nope, I downloaded the 6.0.1351/setup_av_free.exe file and ran it, but the only installation options I got at the start were default/express (or something like that, didn't grab a screenshot) and Custom. Because I didn't have P2P and IM installed I didn't want the default install installing those, so I chose custom and proceeded and that is what I ended up with.

All good for me so far on a clean install, i'll have to wait a while to see if the system shutdown errors in the reliability monitor show up again.

Is the script shield going to be able to work with the IE64 bit browser one day by any chance ?

Same here too, although Japanese installation wizard seems the same to old one (no "Express" option).

P.S. And this is not so clear (I can't remember), but it seems Google Chrome installation option is gone and Chrome is automatically installed...  ??? :-\

But I don't have screenshot or like that, so it could be my mistake.

No, it won't, the decision whether to auto-sandbox the executed application (or to show the query) is done during the FileSystem Shield's scan of that file.

There are other new settings in Settings -> Popups.

Now I re-installing avast to confirm its installing behavior.
If I select "Custom Install", "Install Google Chrome" checkbox becomes unselectable and I can't stop installing it.
This behavior should be changed...  :-\

AIS ........ Win7 64Bit

 >:( >:( >:(

Ran the install which behaved as a fresh install, no mention anywhere about an upgrade as in previous versions.

Used Custom install which was totally ignored and all featutes were added.

All my settings /schedules gone and nothing much seems to work properly.

I also see we have a nice spammy Market Place thrust upon us in a paid application.

More and more unwanted and un-needed features being added instead of concentrating on a solid platform.

Danny96's list is reflected here too.

I have never seen Script Shield work on any of my machines, Web Shield played silly buggers with 80% of sites using Opera in version  6.0.1289 . I certainly won;t be renewing this multi machine license.

Time for a new start with another product methinks.

Script Shield doesn't support Opera, so if that's what you are using, then yes, it doesn't work.
Apart from that, I'm using Opera on all my computers and never had a single problem with WebShield. So, if you have a particular page and a more comprehensive description of the problem than "played silly buggers", you're certainly welcome.

Btw, what exactly did you set in the custom install, compared to the one you had before?

I run a program to trigger autosanbox. When i trigger it, i select open and remember my decision.
Then i remove it from autosanbox exception's list, i restart my machine, and then i run the same file after restart and it don't trigger autosanbox.( the same fot autosandboxme tool).

Clean install with unistall utility with windows 7 sp1 32 bit.

I report a problem with xdvannn.sys That behaviour shield block (part of xtrap techonlogy) when it is created in system32 when i start a game that uses it, after 3 months is not fixed.

Script shield doesn't work for me on either of my 64bit machines using any browser.

Sites affected by Webshield? Avast Forum, vbulletin.com vbulletin.org, BBC.co.uk just to name a few. Select these from a bookmark or speeddial and 90% of the time they simply do not begin to load for anything up to 20 seconds, avast's orange globe remains still. I often have to reclick the bookmarks several times, disable avast and restart without avast loaded and no such issue ever occurs.

The new beta only offers an install not an upgrade ,

I selected custom install without the following :

No Safe Zone,Web Rep, Virtualisation,Gadget,Script Shield,Behaviour Shield.

All features loaded, all previous settings are gone.

The uninstaller didn't run either on the first 2 attempts.

And why oh why have you added yet more spam on the GUI of a paid application? Really not acceptable.

New beta works fine here. I agree with DavidR we need a way to import/export settings. I had to redo all my settings for all of the scans. Auto-Sandbox is working as advertised. I like where the auto-sandbox pop-up is, it's better than before. Now I get to re-populate the persistent cache...yipee!  :)

As far as an up-date notification in the GUI, don't look for it as this is a beta not a final release.  ;D

1. No update available from GUI in my location as of 30 minutes ago.

2. Installed using downloaded installer.   Did not notice an upgrade option.  I even installed it both ways, default and custom on my two desktops.  I got the same result both ways.  Neither appeared to have an "upgade" option.

3. During the install the application of the user's license GUI has been changed.   It now includes Trial option. After choosing the License option from the GUI and selecting it the license applied fine but then got the message, paraphrasing.  Trial Version could not be applied.  It seems to me that if you have already selected the apply License option that you should not be seeing this error message about the Trial version after the fact.

4. Install wiped out all my Scan settings.   This problem needs to be resolved.  It has become a real pain in the butt to update using the installer file.  Yes some would say well use the GUI.  The GUI option is not always available like today.  If there is an improvement in a Security program that I use I ain't going to wait around for some server located who knows where to make it available for the avast! program to update.  This of course applies only where I know where to go to download a valid installer of the updated program.  This of course applies here.

5. I even un-clicked the the Reset boxes before doing the install thinking that may help but to no avail.   The installer wiped out all my Custom scans and it appears reset some of but not all of the default settings on the default scans.

6. Install appeared to wipe out some but not all of my real-time shields expert settings.  Maybe Avast has changed the default expert settings so that they now agree with some the custom expert setting that I had put in?

ALL my settings ,schedules and firewall rules were removed, the firewall is useless as noted earlier , it failed against Eicar files. I had the notice about the Trial activation failing despite the license number being set.

Oh well , this is an opportunity to test what else is around the market place.

EICAR files test firewalls?  No, they do not.

Just updated the FREE Version of Avast from GUI (latest Stable). Everything seems to me working fine.

Some little thing: the "Market" isn't translated but haven't found any major bug. YET! :)

How could you update from the GUI as this is a beta release, it has to be downloaded and run, e.g. installed over the top ?

####
Weird - Don't try this at home folks:
Given the above I though lets try a program update from 6.0.1351 and see what happens. Well it started updating - Interesting I thought perhaps there has been a fast fix on something.

No it actually rolled back to 6.0.1289 and requested a reboot to complete - boom back to square one - given what happened when I installed the 6.0.1351 with the lose of some settings, exclusions and some scans, etc. So it isn't recognising this is a beta stream version and reporting you are up to date it sees the 6.0.1289 as an update.

It looks like I will be remaining on 6.0.1289 until the regular release as I'm not going through the resetting of various settings, exclusions and custom scans.

EDIT To add insult to injury I'm getting another round of avast pop-up ads 'easypass.'

Are you sure that you want this tested as after the reboot from re-installing the beta Avast did the update check and I got this ?

Yes

As has been mentioned beta builds are normally recognised as being on a beta stream and should get only beta version updates. For some reason this hasn't happened (a bug). The beauty of beta testing, stuff happens.

So...am I using 1351 beta or 1289?  ???
The UI has never before "announced" a beta update.  ???

Just check my images in Reply #47 above, you are now back to 6.0.1289, you should/may have been asked to reboot (I was but I initiated the Program Update manually as a test).

I updated from via this thread. I rebooted as always. Since everything appeared to be working I've left it alone. I did the same thing I clicked update from the UI and I received a message that I was up to date. My conclusion was I am using 1289. I'm OK with that. I'm leaving it as is for now.  :)

Mmm, reading everything I think I will stay with 6.0.1289 for now.

Essentially I don't feel there is much wrong with 6.0.1351, just that this current installation file doesn't appear to have an Update path in the install options, just Express and Custom. Both of these are effectively clean installs so you may lose some (though not all) settings, exclusions or custom scans.

Then there is the don't update it or it will revert to version 6.0.1351.

So for me only two issues, which are essentially not a normal running functionality problem, what I did manage to test worked; right up until I tested the program update ;D

I have never been too big on laws and rules.

But there really needs to be a law in the computer world that prevents Friday releases of software.

Avast join the crowd of releasing garbage on Friday.

AIS just popped up and said I have an update to install.  I thought maybe there was a quick fix on a problem with with 6.0.1351.  So I clicked yes apply the update to the program.  AIS applies the update that it was recommending.  Then it says you must restart which I did.

After all the programs loaded on the restart I checked AIS to see what the new program number was and low and behold

The GUI updater reverted AIS back to 6.0.1289.

I checked the program and it was or is indeed 6.0.1289.

At least the reversion process didn't wipe out all my personal settings which I more than I can say for the installer update.

That ought to be a law.

No Friday software update releases.   SMH.

When I used to work before I retired and worked in IT if the powers to be decided to do a Friday update to software I would always leave my office phone off the hook on Monday's or call in sick :o

When I used to work and worked in Accounting I would always ask my source in IT if they were planning a Friday release.  If they were I used to call in sick the following Monday morning and either stroll in in the afternoon or on Tuesdays. :)

I left it alone until at least a couple of pages feedback. At which point I saw there were issues so didn't install (my main reason was for checking the anti-spam engine update).

As DavidR says, if you install beta software you have to expect issues, preferably take an image of your PC beforehand so you can roll back. Beta software is at best to invite feedback, normally to roll out post alpha software that needs wider testing.

Constructive posts are welcome I would have though (module, issue etc.)

It has nothing to do with Saturday or Sunday releases.   I have never found a problem with those.  It is only Friday releases.

Secondly.  I wouldn't pay for an avast! license if I didn't trust them.  So I trust avast!

It has nothing to do with Beta anomalies.  It has to do with Friday releases.

I have seen RTW releases on Friday that have an unusually high amount of bugs in them because IMO the release was on Friday.

I worked long enough in IT departments including managing them and in Accounting to know that Beta, schmeta, RTW, RTM, Alpha what have you.  If it is released on Friday then forget it.   Fortunately this was only a Beta release.   I strongly suggest to Avast that they avoid putting out any RTW or RTM on Fridays.   Maybe it is IT Karma.  I am not going to get into why it happens but it just does.

I will grant you that it was my bad to begin with and I should have passed on it because it was released on Friday, not because it is a Beta.  SMH

Maybe there is a reason that Microsoft does their monthly updates on a Tuesday and not on Friday.  Friday bad IT Karma, just plain bad IT Karma.

Uninstalled 6.0.1289 and installed the 1351 beta....loaded fine: unlike the over the top install, it allowed me to use my license as opposed to only the trial option. The update option appeared again but did not select since before it uninstalled the new version.

OK, it was strange... Should I uninstall the 1289 before BETA? Because upgrade process was not smooth, it was not upgrade, but install on top like from scratch. I went through all steps like in installation from zero, moreover, was asked to specify license, and at the end of setup I've got error message, that "Trial can't be activated" (but I used the license key). Finally, it reverted back to 1289 just after restart, because it "pumped" 1289 as newer one :D Damn, strange BETA this time... :)

I hope nothing messed up in this upgrade-install on top - downgrade process routine...  ;D

so tried myself to install ontop 1289 Avast! Free, results below

1.it offered to install Google Toolbar (ewww)
2.it reset Trial counter, now i needed to re-register Free within 30 days
3.it's update claims 1289 is newer than 1351

the below is result of EVERY settings being lost

4.it lost my settings which disabled Community and Social button
5.it lost my settings which enabled special scans visibility
6.it lost EVERY setting for scans and special scans
7.it lost all the exclusions and ignores in every shield etc.
8.it lost several other settings
9.it lost all manually defined settings from avast5.ini (aaargh)

all in all this failed to behave as update
acts like reinstall with complete settings reset
needed reconfigure every single setting

so based on this experience, please make sure
that the installer ALWAYS backup the previous configuration files!

or is it too much expect backup of half dozen .ini files?

definitely NOT GOOD, please FIX it as it's painful trying to figure out
what exclusion was lost, what setting was lost, what is not working anymore etc.

Generally, it looks to me like the build is perfectly OK but the installer is messed up (that is, it doesn't handle updates from the previous version, and also in some cases sends people back to the official 1289 build).

Which is of course a bad thing unless you're installing from scratch (in which case everything should be fine with the program - or isn't it?)

Thanks

Well Yes and NO:
Some have reported that they did install from scratch and on the next auto update check, it is reporting a program update and if accepted bang your back on 6.0.1289. So it looks like what has previously happened in the pre-release or beta versions, it is on the beta stream updates not the regular release. It doesn't recognise this build as a beta stream update.

Not to mention the whole reason why most people did an install over the top was so that they retained their settings, exclusions, custom scans, etc. This also failed in certain areas but not in others.

So when are avast going to give us the export and import of avast settings that we have been screaming about for years. If that was available I think many more people would do a clean install of the program.

Regular program versions don't offer the beta/pre-release versions, you have to effectively opt-in by downloading it, knowing that it is a beta/pre-release build.

No kidding, but I have never had a Beta release of anything downgrade itself back to the stable version. The update process to this Beta is flawed. There must be other things wrong with it as well, as my Browser opened twice as fast using it. I would advise against using this until it is fixed.

Also, when will you change the obscure and useless way of grouping applications into the firewall? C'mon, give us a name/path and product way of arranging the items. Now we can't exclude a group (which is not empty), see the non familiar names of the companies instead of the product... You've changed Alwil for avast by the same reason... Please, consider.

The UI of the new version also includes the avast! Market, a new way to get info (and potentially try/buy) other avast products. This section can be hidden by disabling the avast! recommendation features in the avast! Community settings.

The content is not final yet - please take it like this.

I've said it before. Marketing is a good way to push forward the company, but the technical details need to be close enough to the goal, or it backfires.

Download links:

Well, the beta is already available in several repositories, but still, don't you think you should stop (or at least reduce) this faulty distribution?

Quote
You can either install from scratch, or over an existing installation of avast (any version).

Sure we "can", but we shouldn't. Even if users skip the fact that the next update is going backwards to 6.0.1289, the first *update* to 6.0.1351 is not really an "update" when all the previous settings are lost.

I suppose that "over an existing installation" could be interpreted like "overwriting", and not as "updating" (which is probably what most users would understand and expect).

Quote
Users of the previous beta can also use the normal in-product updater.

Even that doesn't seem to be correct.

To be clear, I am posting these comments so to make it better. The whole point of a beta (or post alpha?) is to test it. The reports are clear enough: users can't *really* USE it as intended or expected, hence can't be REALLY tested.

Is it "really" necessary to suggest to stop the needless spreading of this beta, ASAP?

^ It has been tested and the basic test failed. I did a clean install of it and it still wanted to upgrade to the stable release. I have better things to do than worry if and when my AV will upgrade or downgrade. This is very clear on what it is supposed to do. Beta should update to Beta at least until there is a final. It should NOT update itself to final on the very first attempt.
You also can stop the spin about this being an Alpha/Beta release, I have been dealing with these things for far to long.
I still find it strange that the LIKE button is still available on a paid version. I know that it can be turned off, but if a user did NOT like it, they would NOT have purchased it. It should not be very hard to fix this minor update issue if that is all it is. On that , I cannot be sure.

Beta's are never going to be perfect as that is what a beta is, if you cant handle the heat get out of the kitchen and wait for the stable release.

For heavens sake it a sodding beta, I have never heard so much whinging, if you don't like or accept what can happen with beta builds then don't take part.

I have been using avast for over seven and a half years and the betas have generally been stable, unlike many other betas. Essentially the problem is with the installation setup file. When I had the thing installed it worked just fine on the tests that I managed to do before actually testing the program update, which rolled back to 6.0.1289.

So I await the change in that installation package and I will try it again.

+100......yeah, its not a perfect Beta.  Maybe Avast! spoils people by releasing bug-free Betas too much. ;)

But seriously......don't you get a Beta anticipating problems?  And trying (almost hoping) to find them?  Beta software is not released so people can get "the newest hottest software" (but I swear thats why half the people like it).....you are volunteering to be a guinea pig.

Well, you (maybe?) missed that all others reported the same behaviour as you did. ;)
Else, you (maybe?) wouldn't have asked this:

Was it only me or all settings return to the defaults? What's up with this beta?  >:( >:( :(

Apologies for the troubles caused by the bad updater.
